Someone needs to tell Pfeiffer it would be easier to just drop a ton of the iron powder in all the faries in the church instead of going throught a complex plan of having a minion play a piano where specific keys would throw a bit of the powder every now and then.

Also, lets get married right after a shit ton of faries and humans have just died and part of the castle was destroyed I guess

And lets not forget the plot needed Elle Fanning to find out how Pfeiffer put her husband in an endless sleep so she has visions about Pfeiffer doing it while approaching the cursed spindle because why wouldn't she!

Abandons the unique story twists of the first Maleficent to deliver a completely perfunctory sequel. Really, it feels like everyone involved in this made it only for the paychecks and nothing more.  At least the visuals look great for the most part (those CGI fairy versions of Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville remain yikes). And there's a worthwhile message about the possible consequences of intolerance that gets lost in the rubble of CGI and noise. Jolie is actually not nearly in this as much as I thought she would be, as most of the heavy lifting seems to be going to Michelle Pfeiffer, who doesn't sink her teeth into her generic villain role as much as she could or should have, while Elle Fanning spends most of the movie either looking concerned or needing to be rescued. Don't feel bad about waiting to see this until you find it on Disney+ under the "yeah, we made this we guess" section. C

from the Main Thread:

Finally Got There.  So:

1. Michelle Pfeiffer is DELICIOUS and worth the ticket alone. She chews EVERYTHING while still being a GODDESS.

2. Angelina Jolie gets A LITTLE overshadowed by Pfeiffer (who's given a bit more to do), but that really doesn't matter cause A. ANGELINA B. OMG SHE'S SO BEAUTIFUL.

3/C Maleficent's WARDROBE was serving.  I just kept thinking, And that's gonna show up on Insta for Halloween LOOKS, and that's going to show up at every Drag Club in the country, and OMG they even gave us a SDCC-It's-95-degrees-with-no-shade-Ready To Wear.  #blessed

Overall,

It's fun.  I totally get why some would not like it, but it's a good sequel to the first one.  Tons of fantasy costume and scenery porn.  There's a nice bit of world building in the middle (even if it wanders juuust a bit).  Philip is smart enough to not be useless, but useless enough to not get in the way of the ladies' stories.  Aurora's well rounded and lovely, a really great modern take on her character.  It gets suuuper dark in the third act, which made me go, wow, damn, omg; yet it ends with a really good and positive message.

There are worse ways to pass two hours.
