I'm not sure it's because of Angelina, I think it's more about the concept of the villain being the star of a live movie. Fullbuster
Today is the day to celebrate the independence of Brazil! Happy 7th september for us! It's really weird to see Brazil was dominated by the Portuguese because nowadays Portugal has 10 million inhabitants while Brazil has 201 million inhabitants, and Brazil is a much bigger economy. It's a changing world ^^

It's a changing world ^^ I think the perfect example is The British Empire that even today holds the record for the largest empire in history, covering a 1/4 of the world's entire land area (and being 144x bigger than UK's current territory) and with a population of around 460M people ("adjusted" today that would be around 2B people). I found this gif really amazing: The closest I see from this POV today is China, with both an immense territory (even if less than 1/3 of the area once controlled by the British Empire) and a more than 1/5 of the world's population (plus a monster economy). Back to old empires, it's truly amazing how big the Russian, Spanish (both controlling about 1/6 of the world's total territory), Portuguese and French (both with around 1/10 of the world's total territory - about the same or bigger than China today) empires were. It's no wonder 75-80% of the world is so influenced by the european culture. Territories which have been, at some point of time, a colony of a European entity (dark blue) or under European sphere of influence (light blue). Fullbuster
It's a slap in the face of the portuguese. lol But those 201 million is just brazilians?? Many Japanese, and refugees move to Brazil. We have a neighborhood in São Paulo, crowded by Japanese. The big majority of people with Japanese descents were born in Brazil, they are Brazilian but their ancestors came from Japan one century ago, this community has 1.5 million people in this country. Many of these Japanese Brazilians emigrated to Japan as soon as the 1980s because they expected to have a better life in a much richer Japan but the truth is they became culturally Brazilian and most of them couldn't fit there and many of them didn't speak Japanese or were not fluent, they felt like strangers and reunited in Portuguese-speaking neighborhoods. They started to go back to Brazil in the recent years, their numbers are decreasing in Japan, they're not very liked in Japan because the locals think they're noisy and vulgar. You could think they're Japanese but a big pat of them is Brazil-born and culturally Brazilian. About Portugal : they probably feel bad today, they are one of the less dynamic poorest country in the European Union, it's quite a sad fate, and their population is already shrinking.. Territories which have been, at some point of time, a colony of a European entity (dark blue) or under European sphere of influence (light blue). The British Empire's influence is still very visible today given English is an official language in many countries all around the world thanks to it : India (it will be the world's most populated country by 2025 so it's absolutely huge), Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Australia, US, New Zealand and so on...If you add the US influence (English being an official language in Philippines, Hollywood, TV shows...all of this contributed to English being the most taught foreign language crushing the competition), I'm surprised you ignored the US in this post of yours given it was the most influential of all (not in terms of conquest but in terms of global influence) and in terms of territory it's as huge as China with numerous military bases meaning it could attack countries all around the world at the same time -> No other country can do this. Portugal was lucky about Brazil because without this territory Portuguese language would be considered as a dead language, given Portugal and other African nations are too small and poor to be influential..Thanks to Brazil Portuguese can compete with languages like French, German or Arabic, even if it's not very taught for now. The Russian/Soviet empire was probably the less influential in terms of language and culture, Russian language has been rejected in many nations for the benefit of local languages while Russian was increasingly replaced by English which has become the dominant foreign language in most of Eastern Europe. Recently Georgia made English the compulsory foreign language, Russian becoming optional. In Uzbekistan last year English has become compulsory and took precedence over Russian. Still, it's still influent in some nations, but the Russian language loses speakers over the years, from 350 million of Russian speakers in 1990 to 230 million nowadays and 150 million expected in 2050. The Spanish empire's influence is clearly felt thanks to the rise of Latin America, particularly Mexico, and the influence of this language in the US. French as a language is slowly declining for now, but it could reborn if some French-speaking African nations can rise and be dynamic, it's a big IF but it's an opportunity. French was mandatory here till few years ago. Now you can choose between it and english. I though about the US, but despite the fact that it has a powerful economy, second globally as a structure (behind only the UE) and a big territory it lacks a major component (the population) that makes the comparison with the old empires less efficient. Not that it would be small (320M), but compared to the 1,35B for China, it seems small (one of the reasons why China has the biggest army in the world and in the end that's the most important thing). As for weapons of mass destruction, it's more of a facade thing. Maybe France or UK have only a few hundred warheads but at this point it all comes down to people, soldiers. No one will use these weapons of mass destruction because no one will ever benefit from them. It's more of a dick contest. I'm really curious what will follow after US and China collapse (all empires do at some point). For the US, it will probably be because of it's immense debts (you gotta think that at some point the money source will be cut by the other countries with China in the lead; in the end it's one of the main reasons why good diplomatic relations with China and the other great powers are so important for the US) and for China extreme population might be an issue.
