The early reception has been extremely enthusiastic. It doesn't seem like it's that far out there compared to the typical Ghibli submissions, GKIDS just needs to campaign it. Certainly if Robot Dreams can get in I don't think Sirocco is that much of a stretch.

I've only heard of two of these movies. Well actually three of them. I forgot about the Piece by Piece thing. I'm very skeptical of the Lego documentary getting in. So yeah if you like animation outside the big name studios that make blockbusters, I guess this is the year for you

2025 Oscars Predictions in Every Category (variety.com)

  • “Inside Out 2” (Pixar)
  • “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” (Warner Bros.)
  • “The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol” (Sony Pictures Classics)
  • “Ultraman: Rising” (Netflix)
  • “The Wild Robot” (DreamWorks Animation) ***

Alternates: “The Imaginary” (Netflix); “Moana 2” (Walt Disney Pictures); “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Walt Disney Pictures); “Spellbound” (Netflix); “That Christmas” (Netflix); “Transformers One” (Paramount); “Untitled Wallace & Gromit Movie” (Netflix)

Don't think he's aware of Piece by Piece or Sirocco's existence but I think both their distributors have the cache to get them attention by year's end

What's the longest Pixar has gone without wining the Oscar for Animated Feature?

Seems to be that they've only gone two awards cycles in a row without winning before now. Now they've been 3 awards cycles without one and there's likely to be a fourth one coming up. Of course there is also WDAS which won in some of the years Pixar didn't win.

If The Wild Robot film lives up to the books then I can see it being a major player. However, this one may unfortunately go to one of the Disney sequels this year. No disrespect to those films, but more so to the nature of Oscar voters.

I’m pretty sure Oscar voters don’t care about animated features unless they have some kind of speciality to them. Like, are they related to Disney/Pixar? Or, who’s name is attached to it? I remember reading some of the Oscar votes for Pinocchio a while back and I’m pretty sure one voter mentioned how they had a chosen favorite animated film that wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, but they went ahead and placed a vote for Pinocchio.

It sucks, but I guess all that matters is if those films are financial successes.
