Most notable milestone that was passed during October was undoubtedly Foreign films reaching an all time annual high in both gross and admissions. Big releases remaining such as MJ1, Interstellar, the battle of the five armies and exodus should push the foreign total to new heights. Annual admissions lags behind that of 2013 by around 1 million. November is looking extremely strong right now though so there's a good chance that this could be reversed. Rsyu
What do you expect for Interstellar and Big Hero 6 in SK? Interstellar-Early screening reactions were pretty positive but it depends on how the GA responds to it. if it has good word of mouth 4 million admissions (or $30-$35 million gross) should be the baseline. Big hero 6- No idea what to expect for this at the current moment. For now I think beating 3 million admissions should be the minimum goal. Very small chance that it'll be another frozen-esque run for WDAS. Wouldn't be surprise if it goes higher than 3 million though.

Rsyu
Taegukgi is my favorite Korean movie. One of my favourites too. For those of you who haven't heard of it, Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War (called taehukgi hwinalrimyeo in Korea) is a 2004 South Korean war film directed by Kang Je-gyu. It stars Jang Dong-gun and Won Bin and tells the story of two brothers who are drafted in the South Korean army by force at the outbreak of the Korean War between North and South. It's not really a full-blown war film (although there are battle scenes), rather it's close to a drama that focuses on the two brothers forced to fight on opposing sides of the war. It was released back in 2004, and was the second film to break the 10 million admissions barrier (11,746,135 admissions). Rsyu
Notable South Korean directors Bong Joon-ho: Korean film industry insiders have nicknamed him "Bong Tae-il," which, pronounced in Korean, sounds similar to the word "detail". Though he displays a fascination for strong subject matter, his films are filled with (often black) humor and sudden mood shifts. Major works Memories of Murder The Host Snowpiercer Choi Dong-hoon: He ranks as one of the most consistently successful directors working in contemporary Korean cinema, with all four of his films becoming commercial hits Major works
The big swindle Tazza: the high rollers Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard The thieves
Chung Ji-young: During his heyday, Chung helmed some of the most hard-hitting and socially conscious films of the 1980s and 1990s. His influence on the industry extended far beyond his filmography, as he was also a fierce advocate for governmental reform, particularly as it affected the Korean film industry Major works North Korean partisan in South Korea White badge Life and Death of the Hollywood Kid Unbowed National Security Hong Sang-soo: Many of Hong's films have received critical acclaim for the director/screenwriter's portrayal and depictions of everyday human relationships. Although most of his works are not considered commercially successful, Hong is one of the most well-known Korean directors in the international film world, and his low budget arthouse films have screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, and other film festivals. Major works The day a pig fell into the well Hahaha Our sunhi Im Kwon-taek: Im Kwon-taek is one of South Korea's most renowned film directors. In an active and prolific career, his films have won many domestic and international film festival awards as well as considerable box-office success, and helped bring international attention to the Korean film industry. As of spring 2013, he has directed 101 films. Major works Mandala Sopyonje Chunhyang Chihwaseon Jang jin: Considered one of the most distinctive voices to emerge from the 1990s Korean cinema renaissance, Jang's unique filmmaking style mixes unconventional storylines, quirky characters, dry and subversive humor, comic twists, sharp puns, stagy presentation, a keen observation of society, and humanism. Jang’s films do not sell millions of tickets but he has nurtured a faithful fan base that appreciates his "Jang Jin-ish" style. Major works Welcome to Dongmakgol Good Morning President Guns and talks Public Enemy Returns Shin Sang-ok: a prolific South Korean film producer and director, with more than 100 producer and 70 director credits. He is most famous for having been kidnapped by the previous North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, for the purpose of producing critically acclaimed films. He was born Shin Tae-seo: he later changed his name to Shin Sang-ok when he started working in films. Major works (South Korea) A flower in hell Prince Yeonsan Beongeoli Sam-ryong Major works (North Korea) Pulgasari Yu Hyun-mok: According to the website koreanfilm.org, his 1961 film Obaltan "has repeatedly been voted the best Korean film of all time in local critics' polls."Yu attended the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1963, where Variety called Obaltan a "remarkable film", and praised Yu's "brilliantly detailed camera" and the film's "probing sympathy and rich characterizations." His dedication to the intellectual side of film and interest in using film to deal with social and political issues led him to have difficulties both with box-office-oriented producers, and with Korea's military government during the 1960s and 1970s. Korean critics have said his directing style is "in the tradition of the Italian Neorealists," yet "the terms 'modernist' or 'expressionistic' are just as applicable to his works." Major works Obaltan Descendant of Cain To Give Freely Martyr Bun-Rye's Story Flame Son of Man Kim Jee-woon: Kim Jee-woon has a history of successfully tackling a wide range of film genres, garnering a cult following among fans of Asian cinema. Major works A tale of two sisters A bittersweet life I saw the devil The good, the bad, the weird The last stand Kim Ki-duk: a South Korean filmmaker noted for his idiosyncratic "art-house" cinematic works. His films have received many distinctions in the festival circuit. Major works Real fiction Samaritan girl 3-iron Arirang Pieta Lee Chang-dong: He won the Best Director award at the 2002 Venice Film Festival and the Best Screenplay award at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. He been nominated for the Golden Lion and the Palme d'Or. Lee served as South Korea's Minister of Culture and Tourism from 2003 to 2004. He has also won Best Director at the Asian Film Awards twice. Major works Secret sunshine Poetry Oasis Peppermint Candy Park Chan-wook: One of the most acclaimed and popular filmmakers in his native country.
