DOFP's admin from the opening Thu to its first sunday was 1.75M. It now depends on how it holds against Park Chan-Wook's R-rated Cannes entry the Handmaiden on week 2. and then Warcraft, The Conjuring 2 and TJB all open the week after. DOFP had a relatively mild competition in week 2 (Maleficent and another Korean movie opened/expanded soft.) then Edge of Tomorrow stole most of its audience on week 3 and by then it had almost done 4M. If APOC falters the Handmaiden its total would be in 3M range. Park's Lady Vengeance, which would be the best comparison for the Handmaiden, opened to roughly about a 1M frame and that was 10 years ago. Given the hype and the presales for the Handmaiden it could do better. (APOC already comes #2 to the Handmaiden in presales.)

The Dark-knight trilogy was popular but then that was from Christopher Nolan who has a cult status here. Zack Snyder films have never really done that well with maybe 300 being the exception.

And compared to BvS First Class had a more well-known, well-established cast. (to the Korean audience) JLaw had yet to really broke out but Jackman, McAvoy, Fassbender and Hoult, all big enough names then, whereas BvS only had Affleck. Cavill only had Man of Steel which was not well-received, plus some people think his appearance is unappealing (balding and way too beefy), and Amy Adams was once even called as "old lady who ruined that American Hustle movie by her presence alone" on the internet. :---P Edited May 30, 2016 by yjs

I think she was good and beautiful in the movie. Actually Jennifer Lawrence was too young unlike the other cast.

Actually Jennifer Lawrence was too young unlike the other cast. haha actually a sad and ridiculous story, someone who made illegal subtitles to the online leak left a little "footnote" by the credit saying "this movie would have worked if it had not been for that super old hag Amy Adams unconvincingly playing a role of femme fatale." and that kinda went semi-viral among movie fans. Some got super mad and some actually agreed that she is kinda "old". :--( Btw I also think Jlaw was a slight miscast in AH and also overpraised for being nominated for an Oscar, but she was freakin fantastic in this science oven scene: https://youtu.be/eIGPvPRzEaQ Edited May 30, 2016 by yjs
yjs
just back from the Handmaiden matinee at 3PM and it was almost a full house! and it was quite entertaining too. more light, fun adaptation of Fingersmith. although there were a group of middle-aged to old women who were drawn by the Cannes bait and got offended by the graphic homosexual scenes at my screening. wonder how it will affect the WOM. still seeing it do well, especially for a Park Chan-Wook film. At least 3M+ total and today it'd do about 250-300K. Edited June 1, 2016 by yjs

I don't think it will get that kind of WoM though, I don't see this being talked about as much in public as The Wailing was.

It did about 300K on its first day (with the discount Wednesday boost tho) so that's a good sign.
bartonfink
Park Chan Wook is maestro and I adore his films, but not a huge fan of The Handmaiden.
