“RUROUNI KENSHIN: KYOTO INFERNO” GROSSES P42.61-M IN 5 DAYS, OPENS AT NO.1

via press release

MANILA, August 25, 2014 – Legendary samurai Kenshin Himura returned to a fiery, red-hot welcome as Warner Bros.' sword-fight epic “Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno” topped the Philippine box-office with an infernal P42.6-million in five days (Aug 20-24). This was announced today by Francis Soliven, General Manager of Warner Bros. (F.E.), Inc. which locally distributed the film.

“Kyoto Inferno's” smash opening figure has already surpassed the entire lifetime gross of the first “Rurouni Kenshin” which earned P40.4-M in its overall run 2012. The record for All-Time Biggest Opening Weekend for a Japanese film was also captured by “Kyoto Inferno” from its predecessor.

“This is a phenomenal bow for `Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno,' one that surely exceeded even our aggressive estimates,” says Soliven. “We'd like to thank the loyal fans of the franchise for their unwavering support and offer our congratulations to director Keishi Otomo and the cast led by Takeru Satoh, Emi Takei and Munetaka Aoki. The aforementioned talents graciously helped promote the film when they visited here for the Asian Premiere three weeks ago. We have no doubt that their visit enabled us to launch the film in the best way possible.”

Indeed, the unprecedented Asian Premiere of “Kyoto Inferno” in Manila generated a firestorm of goodwill among fans and industry stakeholders, not to mention invaluable media presence. The result is an unbelievable first-day gross of P7.34-M last August 20. The fans have clearly spoken, and on the second day, the film collected over P10-M in ticket sales. Boosted by unanimous rave reviews from critics and excellent word-of-mouth, the film was on its way to a sensational opening weekend.

Posting the biggest receipts was SM Megamall with P2.39-M over five days, while Trinoma was second with P2.16-M, and SM Cebu at third with P1.62-M.In the Top Ten Theaters are SM Mall of Asia (P1.57-M), Glorietta 4 (P1.41-M), SM North EDSA (P1.38-M), Ayala Cebu (P1.30-M), Greenbelt 3 (P1.23-M), Eastwood (P 866,850) and Gateway (P 864,056).

Completing the Top Twenty are Alabang Town Center (P 841,091), Greenhills (P 774,768), Shangri-la (P 743,634), Power Plant (P 717,510), SM Aura (P 655,044), Centrio Cagayan de Oro (P 643,260), Robinsons Ermita (P 617,200), Robinsons Magnolia (P 608,664), Bonifacio High Street (P 597,550) and Market! Market! (P 579,084).

But Makoto Shishio (Tatsuya Fujiwara), the 'Shadow Killer' and successor to Kenshin's position as the deadly assassin, has since then been scheming in the Kyoto underworld, raising an army of disaffected former samurais with the aim of overthrowing the new regime.

Agreeing to a request by the new government to defeat Shishio, Kenshin leaves his beloved ones in Tokyo and sets out for Kyoto. He and Shishio are a match in skill and in wits, but their aims are opposite. Can Kenshin preserve the nation without breaking his vow that he will kill no more...?

The films also star Emi Takei (Kaoru Kamiya), Munetaka Aoki (Sanosuke Sagara), Kaito Oyagi (Yahiko Myojin), Yu Aoi (Megumi Takani), Yosuke Eguchi (Hajime Saito), Min Tanaka (Nenji Kashiwazaki), Tao Tsuchiya (Misao Makimachi), Ryunosuke Kamiki (Soujiro Seta), Maryjun Takahashi (Yumi Komagata) and Tatsuya Fujiwara (Makoto Shishio).

The first sequel, “Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno” is now playing across the Philippines, while “Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends”opens on Sept. 24, 2014. Both films are distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

“THE MAZE RUNNER” RACED TO FIRST PLACE AT THE PHILS. BOX-OFFICE WITH P 62.4 MILLION
via press release

6p5clj.jpg

“The Maze Runner” landed top spot at the Phils. Box-Office with an outstanding P62.4 million on its first five days of release (opened Sept. 17) outrunning all other films that simultaneously opened that week. The movie clinched its place as the 3rd Biggest Opening Weekend for a Fox film this year (“X-Men: Days of Future Past” being the 1st) and is now the 4th Biggest Opening Weekend for a Fox film all-time (again succeeding “X-Men: Days of Future Past”) so far.

“The Maze Runner” has exceeded expectations and is also currently tracking higher than previously released YA (young adult) blockbusters such “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.”

Rated PG by the local censors board, “The Maze Runner”opened in more than 170 screens nationwide and has thus far reached a wider demographics outside the books’ fan base. Within the Philippines, it’s Ayala Malls Cinemas’ Trinoma that ranked top with P2.47million of the movie’s opening weekend gross. Next is SM Mall of Asia with P2.46million, coming in 3rd is SM Megamall with P2.11million, SM North Edsa/The Block recorded 4th with P1.92 million and Greenbelt3 at 5th with P1.68million.

Nationwide, the other top grossing cinemas included in “The Maze Runner” dash are: Glorietta4 (P1.58M); Ayala Cebu (P1.56M); Alabang Town Center (P1.54M); Powerplant (P1.42M); SM Cebu (P1.41M); Greenhills TheatreMall (P1.28M); Bonifacio High Street (P1.26M); Gaisano Davao (P1.19M); Gateway Cineplex/Ali Mall (P935, 436); EastWood (P934, 350); Market!Market! (P902,572); Robinson’s Ermita (P894, 810); Shang Cineplex (P882, 519); SM Aura (P862, 056) and Newport (P862,052)
