  1. I like Billie Eilish, but Bad Guy in ads/trailers for TV and movies feels overused at this point. Saw a lot of Fox News in various waiting rooms for years, Nicole Kidman is all wrong for Gretchen Carlson but I guess the thought is that the audience for this movie wouldn't know that. Megyn Kelly is going to be on Fox News tomorrow, supposedly a one-time appearance but if she's seen as realigning herself with them, will the thinkpiece writers try to hold it against Bombshell in some way?
  2. Did we know this is now The Current War: Director's Cut? https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_current_war_directors_cut Technically that's true, but said cut was the one released in the UK this summer, was it not, the new reviews were still meh and it flopped.
  3. I noticed that the character wasn't in the trailer, figured it was because they were focusing on the leads. Is this true? So Disney realized the straight guy playing effiminate wouldn't fly in 2019 after the fact, when everyone could have told them that the minute it first got reported.
  4. Right? The fans who are all over JKR's "wrongs" on representation, the ones complaining that the progressiveness she tries to inject into Potterverse now still isn't good enough, and hated her for leading the Johnny Depp Defense Brigade, would just love Mr. Woke Culture Has Ruined Whole Movie Genres directing the next WW movie. Sure. As much as Cuarón directing Azkaban got double takes when it was announced, given that his last movie before had been Y Tu Mamá También, at least there was a well-regarded children's book adaptation in his background already. Then again, Eli Roth made a movie for kids last year, a kiddie scary movie granted, but nothing anyone would have pictured in his Hostel heyday. So you never truly know, but yeah, it's hard to see Phillips joining the Wizarding World Universe in any way. I can more easily picture him having one meeting with Rowling that would last 15 minutes because it ended in epic disaster.

  6. Re: the thread title, the trailers/ads make it seem more like the operating system falls in love with the guy and gets jealous of his flesh-and-blood love interest...?
  7. I was fine with the idea of Zellweger doing Garland's "later years" voice until I rewatched some 1968-69 clips on Youtube, and oh well, bless Renee for trying. She's still probably going to sweep everything, good for her, making a comeback. And it's retroactively making me more at peace with BCoop being paid dust in Best Actor last year: the reigning winner usually gives out Best Actress the following year at the Globes/SAGs/Oscars, forced, awkward, on-camera ex interactions averted!
  8. I love Be Kind Rewind and just watched this video tonight. It's such a great channel and anyone into the history of Best Actress would really enjoy it, there are videos breaking down different years, from the 1930s to today. If only it updated more often! I think the people who made this Judy Garland biopic figured the audience is at least 75% stans who already know a ton about her, plus Academy voters looking for the requisite level of mimicry and dramatics to give Renee the win. Contextualizing Judy's celebrity was a bit down the list of priorities here.
  9. But Sully wasn't tried by the media or even the NTSB, really, Clint threw that in to stretch the Miracle on the Hudson to 90 minutes, the reality is a Mayday Air Disasters episode. They had to up the drama somehow, and Flight had already done a similar story but with more sizzle: some people on the plane died and the pilot was an alcoholic screwing a flight attendant half his age, then some other junkie chick because, hey, why not. Anyway, the Hanks movie made up this huge skepticism of Sully that never really existed. I follow some awards writers on Twitter who are tired of some of their clickbaiting colleagues, they might embrace a movie that will decry trials by media and the rush to be first! But it's Clint, they hateses him. Is Eastwood ever directing another movie not based on a real story again? Feels like it's been a while...
  10. Too young, same character he'd played already, plus from what I've read, he didn't like being placed in Supporting Actor for the first Godfather, so skipped attending the Oscars that year. Not the sort of thing to endear you to voters. Tough category, Pacino is in good company with all the other nominees who also lost to Art Carney. Over $13m in previews, impressive, hope it's not too frontloaded.
  11. Clinto was never gonna do a Linklater anyway but especially now, there's no point in him wasting time lol. For most of this decade I've wondered if the latest movie was it for him, yet he keeps on pushing. I wonder if this will become important enough in the awards race for Film Twitter to try to start a controversy over filming in Georgia this summer (yes, the real events actually took place in GA, but when has logic ever stopped a social media backlash). Remember how they were mostly, "Eh, whatever, it was all right I guess," about American Sniper when it premiered in November, then when the box office and Oscar nominations poured in, it became the most problematic, warmongering, jingoistic piece of right-wing propaganda ever? Good times!
  12. Remains number one for a second weekend in the UK, drops 36%. https://www.screendaily.com/news/downton-abbey-comfortably-holds-off-ad-astra-rambo-last-blood-at-uk-box-office/5143122.article
  13. Teenagers George and Marigold fall for each other and think the grown-ups only object because she's a "ward" without a title...
  14. The "defamatiom of character" quotes were from before she watched the movie, I guess now she sees that it wasn't the hatchet job she'd envisioned in her head. Still, that is some deluded perception Samantha has of herself if she thinks she wasn't nearly as coldhearted as Ramona.
  15. Get this, the "real" Ramona is furious about her portrayal in the movie and claims "defamatiom of character", insisting that she was not a stripper! Illegally drugging and robbing guys for hundreds of thousands, sure, but don't dare say she took off her clothes for a living! You cannot make this up: https://www.eonline.com/news/1073043/the-true-story-behind-hustlers-might-even-be-wilder-than-the-movie The real-life Destiny is cool with the movie, though.
  16. Just call it Fancy Entourage : Are Joker tickets on sale yet?
  17. Really enjoyed this! Ramona and Destiny had such an interesting and complicated friendship. JLo is fantastic but I thought Wu was very good in a less flashy role. Destiny's relationship with her grandmother was touching, it was good to learn that she wasn't totally naive and had maybe lived a little when she was young. Should have known she was doomed, I teared up when Ramona appeared at the funeral in one of those giant coats. Every time the women were shown on spending sprees I was thinking, "Come on ladies, think about your long-term future-more property, less bling!" Destiny ended up buying herself a nice little house at least. The soundtrack was a fun blast from the recent past. Usher had a whole song about being cool with dating strippers, of course he would be happy to cameo as himself. Lizzo's big moment, lol. Julia Stiles was fine, the moment where she hesitates before drinking the tea is nice, but maybe the script could have done a little more for her than "stock journalist character". Cardi B made me laugh, I wonder if she got to ad-lib any of her lines. It will be a shame when JLo gets all the Supporting Actress nominations when she's clearly one of the leads, and the movie's true star supporting actress Madeline Brewer goes unrewarded all Oscar season.
  18. Looked up what Annapurna released this year instead: Missing Link, Booksmart, Where'd You Go, Bernadette. Hustlers will make more than them combined in about a week and a half, oh well, sucks for them. The Goldfinch won a Pulitzer Prize and was a bestseller, WB probably hoped it'd get nominated/win awards and make money that way. At least it will make a good episode for the This Had Oscar Buzz podcast, probably their fastest turnaround ever. Not much for WB in that, lol. And yes, there were some Gaga fans review-bombing Venom, not a majority, but the crazy stans give everyone else a bad name: Venom vs A Star Is Born ended up being one those rare box office examples where (domestically, anyway) the movie that won the opening weekend face off lost the ultimate battle and finished with less despite the huge head start.
