  1. John Hughes ruled the 80's no doubt but there are other films that represented the 80's very well.  IMO, Fast Times at Ridgemont High is the defining high school film, even moreso than Breakfast Club.  Porky's was also a defining film as it is the highest grossing high school film ever made (I think).  It's a good topic and I too wrote about this a while back.

Can't believe I forgot about Ridgemont High. Phoebe Cates

Porky's, too. Only saw that once, though, and it was a while ago.

  2. What movies do you think best represent a snapshot of what High School was like each decade, or maybe just a part of a decade?

    60s: American Graffiti

    70s: Dazed and Confused

    80s: Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles

90s: American pie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

    00s: Mean Girls

I've got nothin for the 10's. Might have to wait a few years for the folks who were/are in high school to start making films based on their experiences. I'm also unsure if Mean Girls is particularly representative of the 00s, or just high school generally. There are probably better choices out there.

It also occurs to me that these are all pretty much middle class white kid movies. Hopefully we'll get some movies listed that show things from different perspectives.

    What have ya got?

  3. Maybe this is just a one off.  You can't take one summer and disregard the past 40 and say,"See, times are changing."

Not so sure. Didn't the first Apes release in August and do really well? Plus Bourne has done well in August in the past.

  4. The weird thing is the Inhumans are very connected to the Fantastic Four. Medusa and Crystal were even on the team for awhile and Crystal used to be with Human Torch(

    but eventually married Quicksilver

    ).

It's this kind of stuff(like The Punisher and Spider-Man) that make me wish Marvel held the movie rights to all of their characters.

If Marvel did have rights to all their characters, we might not get an Inhumans movie. Probably wouldn't have gotten GotG, either. We'd get X-Men and Fantastic Four. Still, now that we have gotten/are getting those others, I wouldn't mind if the FF came back. I'm fine with X-Men not being part of the MCU, though.

  5. Sometimes I think people forget that Dawn isn't the 2nd Apes installment, its like the 8th. It's a long running sci-fi franchise with a decidedly downer feel that tends to cater to adult male nerds. It shouldn't be surprising that it's better recieved here than with the general audience. It's never gonna be mega-huge.
