I mean I think it's valued pretty fairly for what it is at least by the producers. They know both the potential and the ceiling of its audience and how to work within those boundaries to produce satisfyingly entertaining and lucrative blockbusters
People rated Civil War fairly while Flash was rated with fanboy goggles on. I imagine Apes is somewhere in between, though again I doubt legs will be anything super amazing
I wouldn't expect great legs from it regardless. 2.5x would be a solid result. Just glad it's now blowing past a lot of the tracking comps the past week.
Regardless of the cinemascore what I said above should still be a consideration. Think there is something of a rush factor here, especially since it's the first real "tentpole" movie of the summer, and I wouldn't be surprised by GxK legs
Theater counts: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes debuts in 4,075 locations - The Numbers (the-numbers.com)
Kung Fu Panda gonna hold onto 2000 theaters to the bitter end
Anyway this is an excellent opening in France. Bigger than Elemental's first day and without any sneak previews, only surpassed in the last two years by Mario and Miraculous Ladybug in the family movie genre. Budget rumored to be just $70 mil (though presumably also about an Illumination-level marketing budget)
This originally had the Garfield date, and then it moved up a week when Garfield went there so really it's that movie's fault for insisting on the logjam, especially since it was scheduled for February at first and could've made some pretty nice bank being the only kids movie out.
I guess this will be a test case for if two kids movies can still be successful together in a non-Christmas frame.
Skimmed through Thur/Fri and Valley View (Cleveland vicinity) has sold roughly 60 Furiosa tix so far while Tinseltown (Canton) has sold 40. I'm guessing the upfront audience does lean more toward the urban/cosmopolitan sensibilities
