Week 2 10 (07) ¥34,000,000 ($284,000), -30%, ¥650,000,000 ($5.41 million), Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Movie Wars (Toei) Week 4 >Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have broke ¥800 million, but I want to be "conservative" since its actual went up last weekend. It's outpacing Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith by pretty significant amounts now after seeing a debut on par/below them, and it's incredibly likely to exceed the ¥10 billion milestone. It may come closer to The Phantom Menace's total than originally expected. >Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! is down quite a bit once again this weekend, but its weekdays going into the weekend were notably strong, and it's likely to perform well over the next few days as well. It's still down over 30% from last year's film by comparison, but is still on track to exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. And since its ticket prices are so low, it may sell over 5 million admissions again this year which is no small task. Other notable films: >Spectre is now just ¥200/250 million away from surpassing Skyfall (¥2.75 billion) to become the highest-grossing 007 film. It'll probably get get there next weekend. >Orange is probably over the ¥2 billion milestone, which will make it the fourth-consecutive live-action shojo manga adaptation to reach the mark. But more importantly, it's looking at a total north of ¥2.5 billion (and perhaps close to ¥3 billion), which will make it the highest-grossing shoji film since 2009. >Persona Non Grata's strong weekend showing, combined with its great weekday performance, will allow it to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone. It had a mediocre debut earlier this month, but it's gone on to develop great legs.
  8. Corpse Star Wars: The Force Awakens is up over 10% versus last Saturday thanks to New Years, and Sunday is also looking very strong, as well, so a third weekend increase is looking pretty good. Or, at the very least, it'll see a single digit drop. I'm thinking it pulls off an increase, so a third weekend of over ¥750 million ($6-6.5 million) and a third week total of ~¥6.3 billion ($52/53 million) is looking good. Here's where it'd stand after three weeks against other blockbusters/uber-blockbusters (and for comparison, it's greatly outpacing its predecessors now): Biggest Three Week Totals (2001-) Three Week Total (% of Final Total) - Film (Year) ¥7.22 billion (23.8%) - Spirited Away (2001) ¥6.78 billion (34.6%) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004) ¥6.73 billion (33.2%) - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) ¥6.67 billion (38.6%) - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) ¥6.37 billion (57.9%) - The Matrix Reloaded (2003) ¥6.30 billion (??.?%) - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) *Projection* ¥6.13 billion (56.2%) - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) ¥5.96 billion (62.7%) - Jurassic World (2015) ¥5.95 billion (34.2%) - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! Week 2 10 (07) ¥32,000,000 ($265,000), -34%, ¥650,000,000 ($5.4 million), Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Movie Wars (Toei) Week 4 This weekend is very difficult to predict as it's the bank holidays/New Year, but not apart of the strongest days of the New Year, so expect varying differences between the forecast, weekend estimates, and finally the weekend actuals when they're finally released. The first couple days of January, while strong due to New Years, aren't the strongest of the holiday period. The strongest days occur after the bank holidays (this weekend), which is January 4th and the next several days to follow. So, next week's weekdays are going to be quite humongous (probably 2x or more than this weekend earnings). Still, the films appealing to adults are looking at potential increases this weekend, or at the very least, very small drops. And all the films targeting children/families or teens/young adults are unlikely to hold (or increase) as well unless Sunday proves otherwise. However, the films skewing toward a younger crowd will perform exceptionally well over the weekdays. And that massive increase for Girls und Panzer: The Movie is probably due to some giveaway to moviegoers. Its pre-sales are up even beyond the 200% prediction above compared to last week (they're almost even with last weekend's overall admissions), but I'm being "conservative" in case there's a rush factor today. It's also been out of the Top 10 for a couple weeks now and I haven't been tracking it as extensively since, so its running total could be higher.
  10. Corpse Friday Estimates (01/01) ¥430,000,000 ($3.57 million), +87%, ¥5,535,000,000 ($45.96 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 15 ¥135,000,000 ($1.12 million), -02% ¥3,305,000,000 ($27.44 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories (Toho) Day 14 ¥63,000,000 ($523,000), +133%, ¥2,405,000,000 ($19.77 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 29 ¥43,000,000 ($357,000), -59%, ¥1,830,000,000 ($15.12 million), Orange (Toho) Day 21 ¥36,000,000 ($299,000), +52%, ¥1,180,000,000 ($9.75 million), Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Day 21 % changes versus last week. Now that New Year is in full swing, the more adult driven films (Star Wars, Spectre, and Living With My Mother) will be in for possible increases or excellent holds this weekend versus last weekend. And films that target teens/families (Yo-Kai Watch, Orange, and Chibi Maruko-chan will be mostly down, but will rebound after the weekend.
  11. Corpse Thursday Estimates (12/31) ¥270,000,000 ($2.24 million), +29%, ¥5,105,000,000 ($42.39 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 14 ¥130,000,000 ($1.08 million), +38% ¥3,170,000,000 ($26.32 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories (Toho) Day 13 ¥54,000,000 ($449,000), -30%, ¥1,787,000,000 ($14.76 million), Orange (Toho) Day 20 ¥31,000,000 ($257,000), +35%, ¥2,341,000,000 ($19.25 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 28 ¥20,000,000 ($166,000), +66%, ¥255,000,000 ($2.13 million), Chibi Maruko-chan: The Movie (Toho) Day 9 % changes versus last week. Orange is down Thursday-to-Thursday because last week was Christmas Eve (very popular day in the market for couples to see a movie together).
  12. 17. Corpse Weekend Estimates (12/26-27)/2015年12月26日-2015年12月27日 01 (01) ¥660,000,000 ($5.49 million), -46%, ¥3,650,000,000 ($30.32 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Week 2 02 (02) ¥470,000,000 ($3.91 million), -54%, ¥2,320,000,000 ($19.27 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Toho) Week 2 03 (03) ¥210,000,000 ($1.75 million), -14%, ¥1,400,000,000 ($11.54 million), Orange (Toho) Week 3 04 (04) ¥102,000,000 ($849,000), -26%, ¥2,175,000,000 ($17.85 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Week 4 05 (05) ¥78,000,000 ($649,000), -38%, ¥925,000,000 ($7.23 million), Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Week 3 06 (--) ¥50,000,000 ($415,000), 0, ¥120,000,000 ($998,000), Chibi Maruko-chan: The Movie (Toho) NEW 07 (06) ¥49,000,000 ($404,000), -40%, ¥505,000,000 ($4.17 million), Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Movie Wars (Toei) Week 3 08 (09) ¥47,000,000 ($391,000), -07%, ¥410,000,000 ($3.39 million), High Speed! Free! Starting Days (Shochiku) Week 4 09 (08) ¥42,000,000 ($349,000), -42%, ¥623,304,800 ($5.11 million), Persona Non Grata (Toho) Week 4 10 (07) ¥39,000,000 ($324,000), -40%, ¥620,000,000 ($5.10 million), The Peanuts Movie (Fox) Week 4 >Star Wars: The Force Awakens is down quite a bit, but with this past Wednesday being a holiday and moviegoers waiting for the upcoming New Year holiday period, I'm not too concerned. Its two-week total is very strong, too, so it's displaying solid weekday appeal (a sign it's skewing towards adults/seniors) and won't have to rely too much on its weekend earnings. It's hard to compare it to the other Star Wars films since it's December versus July, but I believe it's still on track to outgross Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith and make a play at achieving the ¥10 billion milestone (uber-blockbuster status), or around $80/85 million. So far, there's no indication it's going to go much higher, so challenging The Phantom Menace doesn't appear reasonable. >Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! couldn't avoid a 50% drop, although the drop is noticeable better than last year's film (-64%). Its opening weekend was down 35% compared to last year's film, but its second weekend is down 21% by comparison. I think it's early enough to say that the sequel will go on to have stronger legs, so reaching the ¥5 billion milestone (blockbuster status) shouldn't be any real struggle. >Orange continues to have incredibly strong legs before the New Year holiday period even begins. It's countering everything in release by being the #1 choice for females and young adults. It's well on its way to outgrossing all of 2015's shoji manga adaptations (which were quite strong already), and might be capable of reaching ¥3 billion. That'd give it a multiplier of nearly 10, and allow it to overtake Spectre to become the third biggest film of December 2015. >Spectre suffered a huge drop last weekend, but began recovering over the weekdays and over the weekend frame. It's outpacing Skyfall by 22% after four weeks in release, but its fourth weekend is down 23% by comparison. So, I think its stronger start will be countered by weaker late returns, and it'll end up earning about the same as Skyfall (¥2.75 billion) in the end. Skyfall is the highest-grossing 007 film, for now. >Chibi Maruko-chan: The Movie starts off with a disappointing start. I'm not going to declare it an outright bomb yet, however, as it's likely to have very strong legs over the New Year holiday period coming up. However, it's clear that rebooting this very popular weekly cartoon for the big screen isn't going to reap the desired results. Also, Creed may have debuted in the Top 10 (9th/10th place). I have it right around ¥40 million, but it'll come down to its avg. ticket price. If it skewed too old, it won't make the Top 10 (in revenue anyway).

  19. Corpse I didn't have time yesterday to track the box office, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens appears headed for a ¥700-750 million ($6-6.5 million) second weekend, while Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! might see a ¥500 million ($4-4.5 million) second weekend. These numbers would bring Star Wars up to around ¥3.7/3.8 billion (~$31 million) after 10 days, and Yo-Kai Watch up to ¥2.3/2.4 billion (~$20 million) after 9 days. This weekend generally isn't very strong since it's the last weekend before Winter Break/New Year begins. The upcoming couple weeks, beginning around the Dec. 30th through Jan. 10th is when the box office explodes in the market (Winter Break/New Year/Bank Holidays), and along with Golden Week and Obon Festival, earns its name as one of the big three weeks of the year.
  20. Corpse Friday Estimates (12/25) ¥230,000,000 ($1.91 million) / ¥2,989,340,000 ($24.71 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 8 ¥137,000,000 ($1.14 million) / ¥1,851,808,800 ($15.30 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Toho) Day 7 ¥105,000,000 ($873,000) / ¥1,189,839,700 ($9.79 million), Orange (Toho) Day 14 ¥27,000,000 ($225,000) / ¥2,072,336,500 ($17.00 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 21 ¥23,000,000 ($192,000) / ¥847,911,600 ($6.58 million), Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Day 13
  21. Corpse Weekday Estimates (12/21-25) Thursday Estimates (12/24) ¥210,000,000 ($1.75 million) / ¥2,759,340,000 ($22.80 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 7 ¥94,000,000 ($778,000) / ¥1,714,808,800 ($14.16 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Toho) Day 6 ¥77,000,000 ($636,000) / ¥1,084,839,700 ($8.92 million), Orange (Toho) Day 13 ¥23,000,000 ($192,000) / ¥2,045,336,500 ($16.77 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 21 ¥22,000,000 ($182,000) / ¥824,911,600 ($6.38 million), Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Day 13
  22. Corpse Wednesday Estimates (12/23) - Holiday (Emperor's Birthday) ¥415,000,000 ($3.43 million) / ¥2,549,340,000 ($21.05 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 6 ¥395,000,000 ($3.26 million) / ¥1,620,808,800 ($13.37 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Toho) Day 5 ¥104,000,000 ($860,000) / ¥1,007,839,700 ($8.27 million), Orange (Toho) Day 12 ¥57,000,000 ($471,000) / ¥2,022,336,500 ($16.57 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 20 ¥53,000,000 ($438,000) / ¥802,911,600 ($6.63 million), Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Day 12 Very impressive Wednesday figures. Compared to Sunday, Wednesday was only down 25/30% for both Star Wars VII and Yo-Kai Watch 2. 2015's final two openers failed to impress for the day. Chibi Maruko-chan the Movie debut was pretty underwhelming, and I believe it missed the Top 5. Its avg ticket price was likely very low, so it probably came in right around ¥50 million (~$400,000). And Creed debuted yesterday as well, but only managed a 10th place debut based on estimates, possibly missing ¥30 million (sub-$250,000). Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on pace to exceed the ¥3 billion milestone on its 8th day of release. This would be two days slower than Revenge of the Sith, and 1 day faster than Attack of the Clones. The former, though, was quite frontloaded and became the lowest-grossing of the prequel trilogy. I believe some goals here, taking the upcoming holiday frame into account, will be reaching the ¥5 billion milestone on day 15/16; and the ¥10 billion milestone between days 50-55. If it hits ¥10 billion, it'll outgross Attack of the Clones (¥9.35 billion) and Revenge of the Sith (¥9.17 billion), and it'll be the first live-action film since 2010 to reach the uber-blockbuster mark of ¥10 billion.
  23. Corpse Note: Schools/Businesses are still in session. Christmas isn't a public holiday, so the box-office won't benefit much until NEXT week when the New Year holiday period begins. Weekday Estimates (12/21-25) Monday Estimates (12/21) ¥270,000,000 ($2.23 million) / ¥1,889,340,000 ($15.59 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 4 ¥85,000,000 ($702,000) / ¥1,142,808,800 ($9.43 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Toho) Day 3 ¥44,000,000 ($364,000) / ¥862,839,700 ($7.07 million), Orange (Toho) Day 10 ¥30,000,000 ($248,000) / ¥726,911,600 ($6.00 million), Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Day 10 ¥24,000,000 ($198,000) / ¥1,940,336,500 ($15.89 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 18 Tuesday Estimates (12/22) ¥245,000,000 ($2.03 million) / ¥2,134,340,000 ($17.62 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 5 ¥83,000,000 ($686,000) / ¥1,225,808,800 ($10.11 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Toho) Day 4 ¥41,000,000 ($339,000) / ¥903,839,700 ($7.41 million), Orange (Toho) Day 11 ¥25,000,000 ($207,000) / ¥1,965,336,500 ($16.09 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 19 ¥23,000,000 ($191,000) / ¥749,911,600 ($6.19 million), Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Day 11 Wednesday Preview: Emperor's Birthday (12/23) Wednesday is going to be a big day for the box office thanks to the holiday falling on ladies' day. It shouldn't trail Sunday's box-office by too much based on morning/afternoon ticket sales. Yo-Kai Watch 2, in particular, is benefiting from the holiday by outgrossing its Monday and Tuesday totals combined for the day and it's only 12PM. It'll probably go on to gross more than 3x its Monday and Tuesday combined take today, aiming for ¥450 million ($3.5-4 million) or so. And Star Wars VII is performing strongly, too, and while it'll likely lose to Yo-Kai Watch 2 today in ticket sales again like it did over the weekend; it's performing well enough that its gross should also be around ¥450 million ($3.5-4 million) today. Wednesday should be the only day that Star Wars VII potentially loses until mid/late January, if not into February. Also, 2015's final two wide openers - Chibi Maruko-chan the Movie and Creed open today, but they're not doing so well. The former might crack the Top 5, and the latter may reach th Top 10.
  24. Corpse Weekend Actuals (12/19-20)/2015年12月19日-2015年12月20日 01 (--) ¥1,245,023,900 ($10.27 million), 0, ¥1,619,340,000 ($13.36 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) NEW 02 (--) ¥1,057,808,800 ($8.73 million), 0, ¥1,057,808,800 ($8.73 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! Free! Starting Days (Shochiku) Week 3 10 (07) ¥41,281,200 ($341,000), -47%, ¥416,262,700 ($3.41 million), Kainan 1890 (Toei) Week 3 This weekend will go down in history as the first, and perhaps the last, time that two films debut above the ¥1 billion milestone on the weekend. >Star Wars: The Force Awakening managed to fend off the Yo-kai, claiming the top spot in terms of revenue, however, it came in second place in terms of admissions. The seventh chapter in the Star Wars franchise sold 800,258 tickets over its weekend frame across 958 screens, making it the second-widest release in history (behind The Amazing Spider-Man). Since opening prior to the weekend, at 06:30PM on Friday, The Force Awakens exceeded 1 million admissions with 1,044,330 tickets sold in its first "3 days". If you include the early Friday showings making up its 3 day total (fair since the prequels have previews included in their openings), its opening on on par with Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones by +01% and trailed Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith by -14%. And, it also delivered the third-highest debut for a Hollywood film this decade (2010-), trailing, though just slightly, Alice in Wonderland by -06% (-04%) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -Part 2 by -04% (-09%) in revenue (admissions). When all is said and done, Star Wars: The Force Awakens should be able to exceed 7 million admissions, which should be enough to exceed the ¥10 billion ($80 million) milestone, and perhaps go as high as ¥11 billion ($90 million). If it does break ¥10 billion, it'll be the first live-action film since Alice in Wonderland to do it. And it's likely to become the second biggest Star Wars film, behind Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, too. ********** >Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! couldn't match the ticket prices from that galaxy from far, far away, settling for second place in terms of revenue, though it did sell more tickets over the weekend giving it the first place ranking on the Japanese weekend charts. The second film in the Yo-Kai Watch phenomenon sold a whopping 974,557 tickets over the weekend on 434 screens. This a fairly large decline of 34% compared to last year's film, but it's still a staggering number and managed to achieve a strong 59% capacity over the weekend frame. It achieved the fourth biggest debut for any animated title in ticket sales, behind the first Yo-Kai Watch by -34%, One Piece Film Z by -14%, and Howl's Moving Castle by -12%. And in terms of revenue, it delivered the seventh biggest debut of any domestic film. It wasn't able to replicate the insane rush to see the first film last year, but I believe it has a strong chance of pulling off stronger legs as a result now that the craze has calmed just a bit this year. Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! should be on track for around 5 million admissions, and a total between ¥5-6 billion (~$45/50 million). ********** The holdovers all experienced some expected heavy drops after losing considerable seating/showtimes, except for one. >Orange delivered an excellent second weekend in the face of two monster debuts, and served as a perfect counter. The shoji manga live-action adaptation appeals primarily to teens/young adults, and this demographic didn't turn up in significant numbers for either Star Wars (adults/seniors) nor Yo-Kai Watch (elementary aged children/families), so it's going to survive this upcoming New Year holiday frame perfectly unharmed.
