  1. Corpse Weekend Estimates (01/17-18) 01 (01) ¥371 million ($3.2 million), -28%, ¥6.35 billion ($54.2 million), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 5 02 (02) ¥187 million ($1.6 million), -46%, ¥6.80 billion ($57.9 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 5 03 (03) ¥115 million ($1.0 million), -42%, ¥520 million ($4.4 million), ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) Week 2 04 (--) ¥94 million ($810,000), 0, ¥94 million ($810,000), Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie (Teoi) NEW 05 (04) ¥81 million ($700,000), -38%, ¥390 million ($3.4 million), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 2 06 (05) ¥51 million ($440,000), -58%, ¥260 million ($2.2 million), Taken 3 (Fox) Week 2 07 (--) ¥49 million ($425,000), 0, ¥49 million ($425,000), Again (Toei) NEW 08 (07) ¥43 million ($375,000), -26%, ¥1.66 billion ($14.2 million), Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 6 09 (06) ¥33 million ($285,000), -44%, ¥1.05 billion ($8.9 million), The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 5 10 (08) ¥23 million ($195,000), -54%, ¥1.46 billion ($12.5 million), The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Warner Bros.) Week 6 11 (10) ¥14 million ($110,000), -54%, ¥1.91 billion ($16.3 million), Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 8 >Big Hero 6 continues its very impressive run, with a third week atop the box-office. It might not overtake Yo-Kai Watch next weekend, but should surpass it by the end of the month. It looks on track for around ¥8.5 billion (~$75 million). >Yo-Kai Watch is beginning to slow down considerably now and will probably miss ¥8 billion and top out around ¥7.5 billion (~$65 million). This total would put it very close to 7 million admissions. >Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie didn't do very well, and probably missed the ¥100 million mark. Just like the Kamen Rider franchise, this series of films also seems to be on a downward trend at the box-office. No estimate can accurately be gathered for Bali Big Brother, but it likely made the bottom of the Top 10.
  2. Corpse >Big Hero 6 will win its third-consecutive weekend and is looking at another potential sub-20% drop, for a fifth weekend just above ¥400 million ($3.5 million). Its total should be around ¥6.4 billion ($55 million) after Sunday. >Yo-Kai Watch will remain in second place for the weekend with a fifth weekend around ¥200 million ($1.7/1.8 million). It's doing very, very little over the weekdays now with all schools in sessions, so it won't be adding much week-to-week from this point. After Sunday, its total should be around ¥6.8 billion ($58 million). Big Hero 6 might catch it next weekend. As for the openers... >The top debut is going to be the latest ranger movie, Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie. It was a bit underwhelming yesterday, so it probably won't match last year's film. It might debut just above the ¥100 million (might hit $1 million) mark. >Again (Koshien film) will be Toei's latest live-action disappointment, and looks to debut around ¥50 million ($400-450,000). I'm a little surprised it's doing this poorly, as baseball films generally do pretty well. >And finally, Phantom Film's Bali Big Brother is only playing on 67 screens, though its opening could challenge Again's based on Saturday. The much lower screen count, 67 vs 204, should keep it in the ¥35/40 million ($300-350,000) range though.

  5. Corpse Mid-Day Report [02:30 PM], Usual Locations (~1/3 of Market), Saturday, 01/10/15 30,252 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Week 4) 29,998 - Big Hero 6 (Week 4) 14,051 - ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (NEW) 13,718 - Psycho-Pass: The Movie (NEW) 7,163 - Taken 3 (NEW) 3,966 - Ao Haru Ride (Week 5) 3,479 - The Vancouver Asahi (Week 4) 2,748 - Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (NEW) 2,292 - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 5) 1,842 - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 5) Yo-Kai Watch doesn't do too much after this point, since it skews so young, so Big Hero 6 will comfortably win the weekend. The fact that it's still beating/keeping pace with Big Hero 6 at the mid-day point is impressive, though, and the race between these two films could go undecided for several weeks. ST looks on track for 75,000/85,000 admissions for the day, so achieving the roughly 150,000 admissions needed to break ¥200 million over the weekend is doable, but not assured quite yet. *Fingers crossed* Psycho-Pass is doing very well in its near-limited release, but it's hard to say where it's headed for the weekend. Taken 3... eh. It might do 45,000/50,000 admissions for the day, so 100,000 admissions over the weekend (¥120-140 million) is possible, if an uphill battle. This is pretty much inline with the last film I believe, and last year's Non-Stop.

The Movie (Toei) Week 4 12 (12) ¥22 million ($190,000), +02%, ¥550 million ($4.7 million), Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Toei) Week 4 Note: Weekend Estimates % changes based on last Weekend's Estimates. New Year delays actual figures for a couple weeks, so take these as rough estimates. >Big Hero 6 looks slightly ahead of its opening weekend admissions by about 5%, and may have delivered its best weekend to date as a result. It's going to double Wreck-It Ralph's total, having already outgrossed it by a significant amount, and it wont be long before it outgrosses most of Pixar's films (Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, and The Incredibles are all coming up), too, and becomes Disney Animation's 2nd biggest film behind Frozen. It may still take a couple weeks to do it, but it's likely to surpass Yo-Kai Watch (in gross at least) with a chance of reaching ¥7 billion ($60 million). >Yo-Kai Watch... eh. It continues to drop fast, and not even New Year is benefiting it all that much. Of course, it doesn't have a wide audience with 94% of it being elementary kids, that of which it burned through opening weekend/week, but it should be holding up a little better than this. I think it's just going to edge past ¥6 billion ($50 million) and maybe 6 million admissions. That's a great figure (especially the admissions), much higher than any Doraemon or Detective Conan film, and also bigger than every Pokemon film besides the first two, so that's a huge accomplishment... but it's kinda disappointing after its record opening weekend. The franchise is also brand new, the first game launching in 2013 and the anime just last year, so let's see where it goes from here.
  9. Corpse Sorry that I didn't provide any updates this past week, but I've been really busy. Weekend Forecast (01/03-04) 01 (02) ¥680 million ($5.8 million), +50%, ¥3.90 billion ($33.3 million), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 3 02 (01) ¥490 million ($4.2 million), -10%, ¥4.85 billion ($41.4 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! Week 4 06 (08) ¥81 million ($690,000), +40%, ¥1.62 billion ($13.9 million), Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 6 07 (06) ¥78 million ($660,000), +18%, ¥1.71 billion ($14.7 million), The Last: Naruto the Movie (Toho) Week 5 08 (07) ¥65 million ($480,000), +17%, ¥800 million ($6.8 million), Gone Girl (Fox) Week 4 09 (09) ¥43 million ($360,000), -12%, ¥140 million ($1.2 million), Princess Jellyfish (Asmik Ace) Week 2 10 (11) ¥33 million ($280,000), +25%, ¥1.05 billion ($9.0 million), Interstellar (Warner Bros.) Week 6 11 (09) ¥23 million ($195,000), -19%, ¥450 million ($3.8 million), Aikatsu! The Movie (Toei) Week 4 Note: Weekend Forecast % changes based on last Weekend's Estimates. New Year delays actual figures for a couple weeks, so take these as very rough estimates. >Big Hero 6 overtook Yo-Kai Watch in the daily race on Wednesday (Tuesday in gross), and has maintained a steady lead ever since. It was bound to happen eventually once schools start back, which will hit Yo-Kai Watch very hard, but doing so before the Winter Break is over is surprising. And it's looking at possibly its best weekend to date, too, besting its opening weekend. It should be pretty close to the ¥4 billion milestone after this weekend, so it's going to reach at least ¥6 billion ($50 million) minimum and could make a run at ¥7 billion+ ($60 million+). >Yo-Kai Watch is experiencing some severe frontloading, and even though it had a record opening weekend and should be near an incredible ¥5 billion after Sunday, it's clear the franchise is appealing exclusively to young children (94% of its opening weekend audience were children under 10 with their parents afterall). And since there aren't many children in Japan, and the number is decreasing every year, it's clear the franchise has its limit and this is probably it. It should still be aiming for about ¥7 billion ($60 million), which is still a huge figure, especially when you consider that it'll have nearly 7 million admissions, too, since its avg. ticket price is incredibly low due to its young audience. Its admissions total won't be easy for any film this coming year to beat. Besides the two leading New Year films, the rest of the top 10 is kinda uninteresting: The Vancouver Asahi is doing very well after its mediocre debut, and should see the biggest weekend increase after looking at Saturday numbers; The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies looks to be on track to surpass The Desolation of Smaug, but may fall short of An Unexpected Journey; Parasyte Part 1 is experiencing a late boost to its previously disappointing run, though it's a bit too late now; and Interstellar could reappear in the Top 10 this weekend.

  12. Corpse Here's another chart I didn't update last week (busy week for me). But last weekend earned itself the Biggest Fall/Winter Weekend and the 8th Biggest Overall Weekend (since at least 2001): Biggest Weekends (Top 10) [2001-] 01. ¥3.601 billion - 07/09-10/2005 (#1 Film - Star Wars: Episosde III: Revenge of the Sith) 02. ¥3.427 billion - 05/03-04/2014 (#1 Film - Frozen) 03. ¥3.423 billion - 07/19-20/2003 (#1 Film - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!) 04. ¥3.329 billion - 07/21-22/2007 (#1 Film - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) 05. ¥3.314 billion - 07/22-23/2006 (#1 Film - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest) 06. ¥3.160 billion - 04/17-18/2010 (#1 Film - Alice in Wonderland) 07. ¥3.048 billion - 07/21-22/2001 (#1 Film - Spirited Away) 08. ¥3.046 billion - 12/20-21/2014 (#1 Film - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!) 09. ¥2.963 billion - 07/17-18/2010 (#1 Film - Arrietty) 10. ¥2.960 billion - 07/18-19/2009 (#1 Film - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) Out: ¥2.917 billion - 07/10-11/2010 (#1 Film - Toy Story 3) 2011, 2012, and 2013 didn't have any weekend make the list, so for 2014 to have two (#2 and #8) is incredible. Let's see if 2015 can deliver a Top 10 weekend now. Golden Week (late April) is crowded, the usual mid-July weekend looks promising, and December has the next Star Wars and Yo-Kai Watch (and possibly more unannounced blockbusters). 2015 Release Schedule Spring Break/Golden Week Releases (March/April): Doraemon: Nobita's Space Heroes (Toho) 03/07 Strobe Edge (Toho) 03/14 Into the Woods (Disney) 03/14 Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (Fox) 03/20 Assassination Classroom (Toho) 03/21 Furious 7 (Toho-Towa) 04/17 Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) 04/18 Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Toei) 04/18 Golden Week Releases Below: Parasyte - Part 2 (Toho) 04/25 Cinderella (Disney) 04/25 Golden Week Releases Above: Summer Vacation/Obon Week Releases (July/August): Avengers: Age of Ultron (Disney) 07/04 The Boy and the Beast (Toho) 07/11 *Mamoru Hosoda* Pokemon XY (Toho) 07/18 Inside Out (Disney) 07/18 Hero 2 (Toho) 7/18 Terminator: Genisys (Paramount) 07/25 Minions (Toho-Towa) 07/31 Obon Week Releases Below: Jurassic World (Paramount) 08/07 Japan's Longest Day (Shochiku) 08/08 Obon Week Releases Above: Ted 2 (Toho-Towa) 08/28 Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Toho) Summer TBA Winter Break/New Year Releases (November/December): 007: Spectre (Sony) November TBA Evangelion 4.0: Final (T-Joy) November TBA New Year Releases Below: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (Fox) 12/18 Yo-Kai Watch 2 (Toho) December TBA Mission: Impossible V (Paramount) December TBA New Year Releases Above: *~80% of the yearly box-office comes from the 6 months above* The release schedule is looking more, and more impressive.

  16. Corpse Hikaru Utada is/was one of Japan's biggest artists, with over 35 million records sold (over 50 million worldwide). Her debut album, "First Love" (1999), also sold 7.7 million copies , making it Japan's highest-selling album of all-time (she also has the 4th best selling album of all-time in Japan). She still holds the record for fastest selling record worldwide, too, with 3.002 million copies sold in one week for "Distance" (2002). She has released two previous songs for the new Evangelion film franchise. Her return has been on the minds of many for several years now. She went on hiatus shortly after the release of her 6th album in 2008. So besides this exciting news of her possible comeback, this news nearly assures the final Evangelion film will indeed be released in November/December of 2015, which looks set to be a huge year for the box-office. Rebuild of Evangelion Box-Office History: Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone - Sept. 2007 Opening: ¥280.1 million ($2.4 million) / 195,000 admissions [84 screens] Total: ¥2.0 billion ($18.1 million) / 1.5 million admissions. Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance - June 2009 Opening: ¥512.2 million ($5.4 million) / 354,000 admissions [120 screens] Total: ¥4.0 billion ($44.2 million) / 2.9 million admissions Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo - Nov. 2012 Opening: ¥1.13 billion ($14.1 million) / 771,764 admissions [224 screens] Total: ¥5.3 billion ($64.0 million) / 3.85 million admissions Evangelion: Final - TBA Fall/Winter 2015
  17. Corpse >Yo-Kai Watch had its weakest day on Wednesday, though still pulled in around 200,000 admissions. It was actually tracking much higher earlier in the day, but business came to a screeching halt in the evening. Its opening weekend demographic breakdown is also very telling: 49:51 (Male:Female) 49.2% - 0-10 year olds (Nursery School/Elementary School children) 44.6% - 30-50+ year olds (Parents/Grandparents) Over 90% of its weekend audience was made up of parents/grandparents and their very young children. Only 6% of its weekend audience was represented by non-families. This explains why it's barely selling any tickets after 6/7PM. So with parents and their children, basically its entire audience, having work/school until next week, its evening shows are dead. Christmas is celebrated in the gift exchange sense by some in Japan, but it's not a holiday so people still attend school/work until next week. But for it to be doing the massive numbers it's earning with just very young children with their parents is very impressive, though it also limits its potential since there's only so many elementary school children in Japan. >Big Hero 6 was very strong on Wednesday, suggesting it has great female appeal (females get half-off their tickets at cinemas every Wednesday). It only tailed Yo-Kai Watch by 20/25% for the day as it continues to catch up, quickly, in the daily race. After 5-days (estimates): ¥2.66 billion ($22.7 million) / 2.44 million - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! ¥1.19 billion ($10.2 million) / 940,000 - Big Hero 6
  18. Corpse Tuesday (Emperor's Birthday) Mid-Day Report (02:30PM) Usual Locations (~1/3 of the Market) 139,475 (-14%) - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (NEW) 50,312 (+01%) - Big Hero 6 (NEW) 19,170 (-19%) - Ao Haru Ride (Week 2) 11,481 (+01%) - The Vancouver Asahi (NEW) 8,108 (-25%) - The Last: Naruto the Movie (Week 3) 7,492 (-10%) - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 2) 7,065 (-33%) - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 2) 6,157 (-08%) - Parasyte Part 1 (Week 4) 5,957 (-03%) - Gone Girl (Week 2) 4,989 (-35%) - Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Week 2) *% increases/decreases compared to Sunday* >Yo-Kai Watch is selling through ~71% of its available tickets at the usual locations today so far, which is incredible even if it's a holiday considering its record opening weekend. If it maintains this pace, it'll probably set a Emperor's Day Record (I think this is a 100% lock) or simply the all-time weekday record. I can't think of anything that would have done more than 500,000 admissions on a weekday, which it's very likely to do, in the past even if it was an opening day... It would have required a holiday otherwise, and I don't see any film that could have done it. >Big Hero 6 is very impressive, too. Weekday holidays are typically ~80% as strong as Sunday, so it keeping pace with Sunday so far today is very good. It's going to have a long run. Early Tuesday predictions: ¥620 million ($5.4 million) / 560,000 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! ¥295 million ($2.5 million) / 235,000 - Big Hero 6

  20. Corpse Weekend Estimates (12/06-07) 01 (--) ¥475 million ($4.1 million), 0, ¥475 million ($4.1 million), The Last: Naruto the Movie (Toho) NEW 02 (01) ¥221 million ($2.0 million), -35%, ¥880 million ($7.6 million), Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 2 03 (02) ¥102 million ($0.87 million), -49%, ¥540 million ($4.6 million), Fury (Kadokawa) Week 2 04 (--) ¥90 million ($0.77 million), 0, ¥90 million ($0.77 million), Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Star-Voyaging Ark (Shochiku) NEW 05 (03) ¥81 million ($0.69 million), -30%, ¥730 million ($6.3 million), Interstellar (Warner Bros.) Week 3 06 (04) ¥70 million ($0.60 million), -27%, ¥930 million ($8.2 million), As the Gods Will (Toho) Week 4 07 (05) ¥68 million ($0.58 million), -15%, ¥560 million ($4.8 million), Miracle: Devil Claus' Love and Magic (Toho) Week 3 08 (06) ¥34 million ($0.29 million), -43%, ¥730 million ($6.3 million), Pale Moon (Shochiku) Week 4 09 (--) ¥30 million ($0.26 million), 0, ¥45 million ($0.38 million), Bump of Chicken: Willpolis 2014 (Toho Video Division) NEW 10 (06) ¥29 million ($0.25 million), -27%, ¥265 million ($2.3 million), Attack on Titan Season 1 Recap: Crimson Bow & Arrow (Pony Canyon) Week 3 >The Last: Naruto the Movie, celebrating the conclusion of the iconic long-running series (15 years), has the best opening weekend since the end of Summer this year. Estimates have its weekend admissions around 390,000, which brings it pretty close to the ¥500 million mark using the last film's avg. ticket price (+the tax increase from this past year). The opening in admissions is approx. 50-60% higher than the previous opening record in the film franchise (254,000 admissions), and it'll undoubtedly go on to become the highest-grossing film in the series, too, which is currently ¥1.47 billion. Based on the estimate, it should have no problem exceeding ¥2 billion ($17/18 million) and has a good shot at reaching ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) with New Year coming up in a few weeks. >Parasyte Part 1 has a decent second weekend hold, but is still underperforming. It's going to need some much better holds from this point forward if it wants to have a respectable finish. It's aiming for about ¥2 billion, but really needs to make a push for ¥2.5 billion+. >Fury has a rough second weekend, but this is a clear sign that its audiences are mostly the older crowds after its solid weekday numbers. Films that skew old generally have weak weekends, but excellent weekdays. It'll still earn over ¥1 billion ($10 million+). >Space Battleship Yamato: Star-Voyaging Ark opened very well, and it's only playing on 89 screens. The limited opening though makes the weekend estimate very rough, especially since its ticket prices could be quite high, but with an estimated 64,000 admissions over the weekend, it should be around the ¥100 million mark. >Bump of Chicken: Willpolis 2014 is also a limited release, but on just 20 screens. Almost all of then are accounted for, but guessing the avg. ticket price for this one is more difficult. Concert tickets are usually very high, so it may have opening a bit higher than estimated here. Concert films like this one also rarely have their box-office numbers reported, so I hope that won't be the case if it really made the Top 10 as estimates suggest.

Parasyte Part 1 is going to disappoint unless it has a strong evening showing or recovers on Sunday. Morning/afternoon ticket sales are unimpressive and aren't much higher than Fury's so far. It should be the biggest opener since September (sigh) but an opening of this level would be disappointing for what was supposed to be a decent sized hit. This isn't the way Takashi Yamazaki wants to follow up on his back-to-back blockbuster hits (The Eternal Zero and Stand By Me, Doraemon) from earlier this year. Fury opened pretty well yesterday earning around ¥35/40 million ($300,000-350,000) based on estimates. This should result in an opening weekend around the ¥200 million mark, but perhaps it can do slightly better. All I'm wanting is for something to actually open above the mark; it's been 8-weeks(!) since a film has done so... Fury will also become Kadokawa's biggest release in at least 2, maybe 3+ years. The Nutcracker (CGI/3D Japanese adaptation) is only playing on 89 screens, but it's doing pretty well and may debut in the Top 10 since that hasn't been a hard task for 2+ months now.

Corpse Weekend Forecast (11/22-23) 01 (--) ¥260 million ($2.3 million), 0, ¥260 million ($2.3 million), Miracle: Devil Claus' Love and Magic (Toho) NEW 02 (--) ¥225 million ($2.0 million), 0, ¥225 million ($2.0 million), Interstellar (Warner Bros.) Week 3 We finally have a pretty good weekend ahead after the drought that October and the first-half of November brought with them. Miracle has numerous stage greetings today which will give it an overwhelming victory today (Saturday), but the stage greetings numbers are trailing those of last year's The Girl in the Sunny Place which opened at a similar time. In admissions, it's very likely to win the weekend, but if it falls hard enough on Sunday, the top spot could be a close race. Interstellar has so-so morning/afternoon ticket sales and will have to overperform in the evening/night if it wants to debut in 1st place. I originally thought it would do Gravity numbers with a debut over ¥300 million ($3 million), and a total around ¥3 billion ($30 million), but it's not looking too hot right now. I really hope it's backloaded since besides Big Hero 6 next month, Hollywood literally has nothing interesting until next year. Almost their entire Nov/Dec. slate was moved to 2015 (and Mockingjay Part 1 isn't receiving a theatrical release in Japan either after the first two films bombed). The season 1 recap of the Attack on Titan anime is only playing on 52 screens, but its massive fanbase will give it a proper opening despite it just being a recap of the first 12 or 13 episodes of the anime. These recaps will prepare fans for the big budget live-action films coming next Summer.

  24. Corpse Weekend Ranking (11/15-16) 01 (--) As the Gods Will (Toho) DEBUT 02 (--) Paper Moon (Shochiku) DEBUT 03 (01) Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 3 04 (03) Clover (Toho) Week 3 05 (02) Twilight Sarasa Saya (Warner Bros.) Week 2 06 (04) The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) Week 3 07 (05) Close Range Love (Toho) Week 6 08 (06) Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) Week 3 09 (--) Expelled from Paradise (Toei) DEBUT 10 (08) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 15 >As the Gods Will has the best opening in 7 weeks, but still got off to a mediocre start. From director Takashi Miike, the film earned ¥180,281,700 ($1.59 million) with 133,887 admissions on 318 screens. The opening should be enough for it reach ¥1 billion ($9/10 million), but it take most of the remaining year to do it. >Paper Moon grossed ¥133,625,600 ($1.18 million) with 104,018 admissions on 260 screens. A pretty standard and expected opening here. The film is already showing strength over the weekdays, so legs could turn out well here that ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) could also be doable. >Expelled from Paradise makes a big splash by making the Top 10. Playing on only 13 screens, it grossed ¥29,194,600 ($256,000) with 17,274 admissions. The opening is impressive all on its own, but what makes it more so is the film is original. It's not uncommon for anime films with strong fanbases to pull in big numbers on very few screens, but I don't remember the last time an original film did this well on so few screens. The Shinjuku Wald 9 Cinema was noted to have made up most of the weekend's total for Expelled from Paradise, being fully booked on Saturday and most of Sunday. Granted, its director and screenwriter are behind very popular series like Fullmetal Alchemist, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Magi Madoka Magicka, but Expelled from Paradise isn't related to any prior series.
  25. Corpse Weekend Ranking (11/08-09) 01 (03) Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 2 02 (--) Twilight Sasara Saya (Warner Bros.) DEBUT 03 (02) Clover (Toho) Week 2 04 (01) The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) Week 2 05 (04) Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) Week 2 06 (05) Close Range Love (Toho) Week 5 07 (07) Cape Nostalgia (Toei) Week 5 08 (12) HappinessCharge Precure! The Ballerina of the Land of Dolls (Toei) Week 5 09 (11) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 14 10 (10) Grace of Monaco (Gaga) Week 4 Quite the interesting weekend here. >Beauty and the Beast rises to 1st place for a big victory here. It exceeded expectations last weekend and debuted in 3rd, but manages to hold on quite well to capture the #1 spot in its second weekend earning ¥114,272,300 ($1.02 million) with 82,085 admissions. It should continue to have a very leggy run as it's not likely to lose hardly any screens for weeks given its low initial count and this weekend's #1 ranking. >Twilight Sasara Saya debuts in 2nd place, though it did win the weekend in a very close admissions race (just 55 admissions!). Playing on 264 screens, the film grossed ¥108,366,000 ($970,000) with 82,140 admissions. A pretty mediocre start, but let's see how it holds through the month. >Close Range Love holds fairly steady and grosses ¥46,003,200 ($410,000) with 37,705 admissions in its 5th weekend, bringing its total above the ¥1 billion milestone to ¥1,009,330,800 ($9.2 million) with 819,430 admissions. >Stand By Me, Doraemon rises back into the Top 10! It spent 12-consecutive weeks in the Top 10 before falling to 11th last weekend, so this makes its 13th non-consecutive week in the Top 10 now. After 14-weeks in release, it has grossed a huge ¥8.21 billion ($78.9 million) with 6.18 million admissions. >And HappinessCharge Precure! also rises back into the Top 10 as well. Pretty much all the films skewing to an older audiences were bumped off for it and Doraemon to increase. >Sabotage opened very poorly and missed the Top 10. I'll post the numbers when they're available (it placed 13th), Algren, don't worry.
