  1. Something that is somewhat impressive is that as of now Divergent is still at 17% on Movietickets.com - Hollywood executives still ignore the female audience too much. Look at the main characters in the theaters now - Noah, Kermit and Walter, Mr. Peabody, Liam Neeson, Need for Speed, Lego Movie, Sabotage, etc. and look at how many of them are males. Then add Captain America and Draft Day to the mix, too.
  2. I think Divergent will surprise and do 26 million this weekend. Noah gets 33, Divergent gets 26.
  3. I don't get the Twilight comparisons now when looking at Divergent's potential multiplier. Divergent is doing decently with males and people over 25, and has decent reviews from audiences. Let's look at other action movies with male leads in March that might be a better comparison.
  4. I'm not a fan of most conservatives either, nor am I a fan of talk radio. I'm just being honest in that that is a huge chunk of the film's audience. There just aren't a whole lot of Jewish people in the U.S. to fill up seats in movie theaters and watch an Old Testament story.
  5. This movie is going to underperform - only 33 million OW. Conservatives on talk radio are bashing the movie. Advertising a movie "from the director of Black Swan" is probably not a smart way to market a mainstream movie being released in March.
  6. That Muppets numbers is terrible considering 50% of the K-12 school districts in the U.S. are on Spring Break this week. That movie will be lucky to make 50 million domestic.
  7. So what is the expectation for the Monday through Thursday numbers? About half of the middle school and high school districts in the U.S.A. will be on spring break this week, so that should help a little bit. Would we say about 3 million each day? So 12 million total from Mon. through Thurs.? Assuming today is good for Divergent, let's say the official weekend number is 57 million. Are we looking at 70 million total in its first 7 days?
  8. I think it will have a 2.8 multipler if the audience approval rating on Flixster stays high at 80%. Word of mouth among female audiences will drive this movie's legs, whether good or bad.
  9. I think the Saturday numbers are going to be really good. The fact that many of the audience members are males and people over 30 years old is very promising. And the ticket sales on Movietickets.com still have Divergent at 40% right now - so it must have been crushing Muppets on Saturday.

  11. In case anyone is interested, here are some photos I took of some of the locations in Chicago where Divergent filmed. Free and open to the public. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBL8aW3I_YY
  12. In case anyone is interested, here is a slideshow of some of the photos I took of the movie filming in Chicago over the summer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eosKfu9AGk
  13. Will we get an updated weekend number for Divergent sometime tonight? Or will we have to wait until the projections come in on Sunday morning?
  14. Yeah, the thing is that they are usually wrong on the whole risk-aversion thing. They make so many dumb CGI action movies and so many outdated reboots that they neglect to pay attention when something fresh and daring is attempted and actually makes a lot of money (like an Inception, for example). Look at the poor box office numbers for something like Robocop. They just ignore that, and will churn out 10 more reboots of franchises just like it. Whereas when the a movie comes along and tries to be intelligent it usually does really well, but it is then ignored (Captain Phillips or something). Then we end up with Transformers part 8.
  15. I am curious as to why the Hollywood studios believe Chinese audiences just want mindless explosions and endless CGI. Is this really what Chinese and global audiences want? Or is this pretty much all that they get to see? I don't believe that Chinese moviegoers are any dumber than your average American moviegoer, but studios might think that they are. Don't they think that Chinese people can appreciate good dialogue and can read subtitles?
  16. Killed by a DVD release. Poor, poor Frozen....only a total of 400 million domestic.
  17. The 80% approval rating from its target audience will probably give Divergent some decent legs, and it could have a 2.8, 2.9, or possibly a 3.0 multiplier. Even with all of these male-oriented movies coming out like Noah, Captain America, and Draft Day, females could still choose to flock to Divergent instead. Look at the solid legs of something like "The Heat" as a comparison.
  18. So what I'm getting from these Friday numbers is that Deadline.com thinks that Divergent's 24 million dollar Thursday night/Friday is going to lead to a 55 million dollar weekend, but most other people believe Divergent will do decent Saturday night business with males/other groups than just fans and that it will end up with a 60 million dollar weekend. Is this basically accurate?
  19. Wormy, are you really 15 years old? You know a lot of information about the film industry for a high school student. Do you have parents that work in the film or tv industry?
  20. Does anybody know of a website (free website, that is) that will show what percentage of the ticket buyers for Divergent were male/female? I would be curious to see those numbers for this movie's first 3 weekends in release. Supposedly it is doing much better amongst males compared to the crappy Twilight movies that had audiences that were almost 75% female.
  21. I'm not so optimistic about the legs of Muppets Most Wanted, given how family audiences will be torn between it, Mr. Peabody, and then Rio in 3 weeks. They should have spread these 3 movies out an extra week from each other. One website (ShowBuzz Daily) has Muppets ending at 100 million DOM. I think that's a joke because of the competition from the other 2 movies. I would say it ends at 70 million DOM.
  22. That is 2 weekends in a row, Sean. It might be time to shave all of that facial hair.
  23. Yeah, it is a little more complicated than that, though. It is completely socially acceptable for girls to wear the color blue or play high school sports, but it is socially questionable if boys wear the color pink or like to shop for clothes at the mall. It is not males or females fault of this generation for this thinking - it is ingrained sexism from patriarchy over tens of thousands of years of human cities/civilization. Guys are totally fine with watching two women kiss, because that does not threaten male patriarchy. But guys often have a problem with watching two men kissing, or the idea of same-sex marriage, because that does threaten male patriarchy.
  24. They should think about how many females go see Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, Iron Man, James Bond, Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones, Jason Bourne, Star Wars....and no guy ever thinks they are a lesbian for doing so.
  25. I think the legs for this movie will be pretty decent - a 2.6 multiplier. Females (teenagers and their moms) will be curious about this in its 2nd and 3rd weekends while the movie theaters go back to being filled with male-led blockbusters and comic book movies. Females only get the leading role in 25% of the films, so female audiences are going to give this some decent legs.
