Like I said...someone paid for it.  In this case, those who bought early distribution globally.  And they paid Europacorp/Besson for the rights.  Either way, people are losing big money invested, and it's ultimately on Europacorp and Besson's reputation, even if they didn't pay for it themselves.

"One film financier pointed out to Deadline that Valerian‘s reported $205M production cost was far too high when it came to starting a new franchise. Breaking down the film’s financing structure is akin to a calculus project, but there’s no upside here for anyone. STXfilms has a distribution fee that’s close to 10% per sources and $5M invested in the film. P&A was largely handled by EuropaCorp because of a lot this — the presence at the Comic-Cons, a one sheet, the first trailer — was overseen by EuropaCorp when it as at RED. They were always on the hook for the bulk of the $60M domestic P&A, I hear. Overseas, each foreign territory handling distribution is on the hook for P&A. Lionsgate has Valerian in the UK and domestic home entertainment."

  2. Hard to say how the BO will do. It's too early to determine how it's going to be marketed. Early reviews are mixed so that hurts any award hype it could realistically get (unless this year is very weak in the best movie category). Boyega has Star Wars but I'm not sure if American audience will put up with more British actors in American roles. Is his character British or American? The controversy didn't hurt Get Out but this movie may not be as good.

Well, it's been talked about plenty in this thread, but basically you presell distribution to foreign territories. So Besson and Co approached many distribution companies, armed with the script, the attached talent, promo reels, concept art, etc and companies bought the rights to distribute in various territories. That money was used as collateral to secure bank loans to cover almost all the production cost. If the movie does well, everyone wins. If it does poorly, many companies lose money but not to an overwhelming degree. And most importantly, the movie gets made.

Actually Besson neglected to mention that Lambert was deeply involved in getting financing for the movie before he died.  Besson can claim Europacorp won't take a hit for this all he wants but time will tell if he is just bs'ing.

The budget was 209M, but with most of that money made back already and the marketing costs being split among the different distributors, it'll be tough for it to truly "lose" money.  EuropaCorp is only distributing in France I believe, where it'll likely be a hit, so I highly doubt they'll really lose too much.  STX will lose money on marketing if it doesn't do well enough in the US, not Europa (and even then STX will still have A Bad Moms Christmas coming later this year which will probably make back any potential losses Valerian might have)

With a budget that high no one is going to take a financial hit? I'm not buying it. Someone is downplaying this.
