  1. Though I will agree with @ThomasNicole here and, barring disastrous reviews or some odd creative hiccups, that this will still do okay enough box office wise on the back that it is copying all the tropes and concepts that are in the most successful Disney films. I’d argue a big reason why Elemental resonated despite largely being lesser Pixar was how it felt so spiritually and tonally similar to Pixar’s most successful movies, and reminded people of the stuff they already like. A lot of the reactions point to “it’s flawed, but also the characters and songs are fun.” That’s enough for a lot of families, especially over the holidays, and it’s different enough from Wonka audience wise to not have the direct competition be that intense. Whether that is good or not for the studios creatively is a whole other thing, but it’ll likely be fine financially.
  2. That refrain never held water. Audiences are repulsed at anything that isn’t a nostalgic toy commercial and will gladly see and hype up anything that has a 2 on it. Their brains only crave comfort and familiarity. It is what it is. 🤷‍♂️

  4. During Hispanic Heritage Month, some influencer was talking about Pedro Pascal and unironically called him "daddy". I cringed in my seat right there. Don't bring Internet speak out there in the real world.

  8. FYC 1960s Most people probably have seen the 1998 movie with Lindsay Lohan, but this also deserves love too. It's anchored by a very strong dual role from Hayley Mills, and is a sweet-hearted and solidly humorous romantic comedy with fun slapstick in the beginning during the summer camp sequences, and solid charm and laughs through the remainder of the runtime. This is also helped by a strong adult cast. Writer and director David Swift plays it smart by having the parents be solidly likable characters with decent depth and dimension, and both have solid chemistry, making it easy to want them to get together. There's also Joanna Barnes as the snooty fiancee and Leo G. Carroll as the priest, who are the comedic highlights. So if you liked the Lohan movie, do watch this. It's great. The film's structure is pretty odd and out there, but that's part of what makes it endearing. All the characters are memorable, with Arthur, Merlin, and Archimedes all doing well as a comedy trio, the lessons taught are solidly told, the Sherman tunes are pleasant, and there is still a sense of progression and a story thread in all these vignettes where it feels like Arthur's learning something and is progrssing in becoming king. But above all else, I love how laid-back the tone and story is. It's a patient film that isn't really in a hurry, with very minor stakes despite the whole "becoming king of England" backdrop. Still, it's never boring, with enough wackiness and bounciness to still keep your attention. You don't really get movies as laid-back and relaxed as these nowadays, especially ones for children, and I have great appreciation and respect for movies that pull off these kind of relaxing, hangout vibes. A kid-friendly iteration of those classic 40s screwball comedies, this is an infectiously silly and endearing little comedy with a lot of fun side characters, two great leads with Hayley Mills and Dean Jones, a premise that is just weird enough to work, and a cute little kitty cat who somehow understands the assignment. It's a good introduction to screwball humor for youngsters and is still just clever and likable enough to get smirks and smiles from older viewers that I think most would get something out of it. Silly to a fault, yet also pretty endearing all the same, with a great cast (David Tomlinson and Buddy Hackett the MVPs) and a goofy, but still solid premise about a living car that carries the whole thing through. It honestly does a solid job in making Herbie, the living car, have enough of a personality despite never talking nor having any animated expressions, and there's decent enough stakes in the narrative that it does keep the viewer invested and vibing with this silly scenario.
  9. There's something weirdly poetic about Rise of Gru having sunglasses next to it lol
  10. We saw Manchester by the Sea at Christmas. Nothing could be worse than that lol
  11. Hoping to convince my parents to have that be our Christmas movie. Don’t know if it will work tho
  12. Well if men feel alienated because the star of a kids movie has an XX chromosome, then that's their stupid fault and shows how gross and sexist and pathetic they are. And because you didn't listen to my warnings, you have been threadbanned from the weekend thread. And as an aside to everybody else, we're done with this whole "women hate superheroes, women shouldn't be in comic book movies, won't somebody think of the poor men". These comments are gross, sexist, and unwelcome here. If you have a problem with me doing this, talk to me privately. And if you don't like that the staff is holding posts like these accountable, note, as I always say, we're not the only place on the Internet where you can talk about Marvel movies. No sense hanging out in a place you hate.
  13. Moderation No. And now let us all move on from such sexist nonsense. Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuu
  14. I'm very confused at the "kids don't care about theaters" stuff when the evidence shows that the olds don't care. Plus the MPAA showed in their 2021 moviegoing survey that kids are still paying tickets, overindexing the usual population. https://www.motionpictures.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/MPA-2021-THEME-Report-FINAL.pdf 2-11: 13% population, 16% moviegoers, 14% tickets sold 12-17: 8% population, 12% moviegoers, 14% tickets sold 18-24: 9% population, 14% moviegoers, 14% tickets sold No 2022 survey for some reason, but there's no reason to think things skewed that much. Like it seems to me the kids still care about theaters.
  15. Well, good to know the staff are doing their jobs well and making sure things aren't toxic or annoying. 👍
  16. Update The GOAT - Suspended for one month for reaching 10 warning points.
  17. We've given out 10 seperate warnings. 12 if you include some 0-point verbal warnings. Might even be forgetting one or two. This isn't a normal weekend thread mate. EDIT: Oh, and two people got suspended this weekend. Yeah, it ain't normal.
