  1. I agree on all accounts. And the way people are dodging this obvious issue is gross. (Like Torontofan’s post below mine) But your post was off-topic and going to cause derailments and fights and we don’t need that here. We have already said everything that needs to be said in regards to how racism impacted Little Mermaid’s box office and bringing it up again won’t lead to anything productive. I know you may be disappointed, but that’s just the way it is. And as always, remember that we’re not the only place on the Internet where you can talk about Little Mermaid and its box office.
  2. Because it will start petty fights and flame wars that we don’t need. We have already discussed how racism has impacted the movie’s performance already and have had to lock this thread once yesterday. We don’t need to do it again.
  3. Disney movies always have the Disney/Pixar logo on top of the movie title. Those movies air all the time and are promoted all the time on Disney Channel. The trailers and ads always say "From the people who brought you Frozen/Toy Story/Inside Out". They clearly push these movies to make sure you know they have the Disney name on them. Hell, animation studios have always emphasized the studio that makes them as a brand name. Dreamworks does this, Illumination does this. People know what's a Disney and what's not. I do agree the issue is that original animation doesn't sell (remember, only nostalgic toy commercials make money now), but the whole "nobody knows what's Disney or not" holds no water.

  5. Okay, time to unlock things. And to make sure everybody's in the loop on everything here. No, racism isn't the sole entire reason TLM is underperforming in certain territories. But to say that it isn't a factor or using some "well why aren't you supporting our movies" strawman argument that has literally nothing to do with the conversation is blatantly trying to hide from the facts and ignore a legit serious issue. An issue that is prominent throughout the entire world. It can hurt to see people call out your country, and at times seem unfair for understandable reasons. But this kind of stuff only derails conversations and makes things unbearable for everybody. Now that that's out of the way, we are done talking about whether this country is more racist than this country, the "beauty standards" of certain countries, any and all reasons why Halle should not have played Ariel, and so on. We have said absolutely said everything that needs to be said in this regard and there is nothing more to add. So we have to move on. And if you cannot move on, you will be threadbanned instantly. No exceptions. If you have any problems with this whatsoever, you can either explain why in my PMs or simply go somewhere else. As I love to mention again and again, and I will always mention until I am dead and buried into the ground, if you don't like a forum and/or how it's run, then find another place that fits you better. We are not the only place on the entire Internet where you can talk about the box office and Little Mermaid in particular, so why hang around a place you don't care for?
  6. Wakanda Forever was only 20% white, so this is an improvement. Really, it’s just that post-pandemic, white moviegoers have seen big declines. Creed 3 was also 21% white, though that is obviously a much smaller opening. https://deadline.com/2022/11/box-office-black-panther-wakanda-forever-1235169891/ https://deadline.com/2023/03/box-office-creed-iii-michael-b-jordan-2-1235277748/
  7. Moderation @Jeight has been threadbanned for 24 hours for defending an abuser for some petty Marvel vs. DC bull crap. Speaking of, we’re done with this “Blank killed DC” crap too. You guys know DC isnt “dead” whatsoever, and are clearly just doing this to start a fight, especially y’all being coy with Zack Snyder, and it’s not funny. You all know this is going to end badly, it has been for years and years, so is it worth doing all this to make fun of some silly kids movies? No. So please do me a favor and act like adults.
  8. Ehhh. This does have Hugh Laurie, but Cruella did it better
  9. 1. Cinderella 2. The Little Mermaid 3. The Jungle Book A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes is my favorite Disney song period, and all the other tunes are supremely underrated, especially Sing Sweet Nightingale and So This is Love. Just an amazing film in general really...now I want to watch Cinderella again lol
  10. Aren’t all these remakes 2 hours plus? And typically their legs are fine.
  11. Oh I see. Misunderstood your post. And yeah, I also think Halle's casting is also a big draw for white guys like me. I'm tired of these stupid remakes like everybody else, and I'm already planning to catch it later this week because I love Halle and her music and want to support her from all the backlash against her. I would have skipped this otherwise if Ariel was white.
  12. See I actually do disagree with this. Movie audiences today have skewed more and more nonwhite and more towards urban/metropolitan markets, especially post-COVID. Top Gun 2's the exception, not the rule. So having Halle Bailey cast and nailing the part perfectly made this a Black Panther-style event. The audience that already go out for these remakes were already on board, but it also brought in a major audience sector who were excited they were being represented faithfully in a genre that was ignoring them since Princess and the Frog, which is almost 15 years old (That's such an insane fact lmao we're getting old). Right-wingers who are all "Boycott Disney" were never going to see this if it starred a white girl, because they already barely go to the movies. And if Halle or Zendaya wasn't in here, then this movie would probably be grossing more around Maleficent numbers to account for remake fatigue/Disney+ factor (still good numbers!)
  13. Yeah to clarify in my post, because I know it can be taken the wrong way, I do agree with you and don't think the underperformance for Mermaid OS is necessarily malicious intent (though it's definitely out there). But I do think it's at least unintentional racism, which is still racism at the end of the day. And it is true that these movies are hurt by the fact that many major markets don't have huge Black populations. But that's also a problem too, since people should be more willing to watch art and media made by and starring people who aren't from their cultural and racial background for a wide variety of reasons. And while it's getting a bit better, at least here in the US, we've got a long way to go.
  14. Ohhhhh See when I read "Drogo", my mind immediately went to Rocky, not Game of Thrones. And I was very confused, because Creed 3's not playing in theaters anymore.
  15. Right here, hi. Don't worry, I'm making sure things don't get out of hand and have hid a few posts that went out of line, and I think things are doing fine. Yes there's some heavy conversations happening, but there's no reason for them to be hidden away (if anything, that's even worse), so long as things don't get personal. Things haven't. We're good.
  16. I have no clue what you're talking about lol
  17. I'm sorry, but there was nothing different in terms of the advertising, appeal, and critical reception for Little Mermaid compared to any of the other recent Disney remakes. And Little Mermaid isn't this obscure title in the Disney Animation library. It was a big hit at the time, one of the biggest home video hits ever, the Disney Princess franchise has kept it relevant for decades, Ariel is one of the most beloved and iconic Disney Princesses ever. I have very strong doubts that success wasn't felt in other major territories. And while the lack of some big international star like Jolie can explain things and I do agree with that (though Dumbo didn't have some big global superstar either, and it still got 67% of its money from overseas), the only other key difference this movie has that other movies don't is that the main character has a different race from the cartoon. And considering that there are legit reports here that there have been hate campaigns made towards Halle Bailey within overseas countries (check the Little Mermaid thread, that stuff is mentioned) because she is Black (and yes, that is the reason)...yeah, racism is playing a factor here. Whether you like it or not. Is it the main one? Probably not. But I sincerely doubt things would skew the way it is if Ariel was played by Sadie Sink or some other white girl. And I don't think we should dance around the idea or speculate some other problem here, as it's only us putting our heads into the sand and ignoring that anti-Black racism is alive and well.
  18. Seated for the real event of the weekend, You Hurt My Feelings with Julia Louis-Dreyfus my Queen. School isn’t out yet and I’ve already seen like five girls dressed up as Ariel. It’s soooooooooo cute 🥰
  19. I mean Disney HQ will be closed on Monday. It's a holiday. People won't be working.
