Cinemacon 2021 Discussion Thread | Clifford gets screened!

We were this close to that being a Josh Gad vehicle, but we just dodged the biggest bullet in history -
I'll admit I'm biased as a Little Monster, but House of Gucci garnered a lot of Twitter headlines when the trailer dropped and I think the trailer sells itself well as a campy, fun thrill ride with a great cast. I'm assuming also that there will be awards buzz for Gaga and maybe one of the supporting actors, which will also go a long way. Last Duel though always kinda felt like an Ad Astra performer to me even before the pandemic and all its competition. The whole movie being focused around rape was always gonna make it a tough sell IMO. Reviews might change things though

Honestly the only weekends that are "cursed" or at least are a bad place to put a movie under at this point is Super Bowl weekend, and the two weekends after Thanksgiving (unless of course Thanksgiving is really late like in 2019 or 2013), and that's just because it's in a hard place in terms of holiday bumps. There's no Thanksgiving bump, people already spent a lot of money over the Thanksgiving break as is, and it's too early on the calendar to get a Christmas bump, especially since so many other movies launch closer to the date and take up real estate in auditoriums and advertising. And even then, when it comes to the latter, stuff like Last Samurai, Ocean's Eleven, and Narnia all did boffo numbers in those early December debuts precisely because they were exciting, appealing movies folks wanted to see. Almost as if people will see a movie that looks interesting and is advertised well regardless of a release date

The movies are back! Again! Yes indeed, after the plague canceled last year's convention, CinemaCon has finally returned in all its glory, just as we’re about to head into this fall’s batch of exciting new releases. It’s a very crucial conference too, as movie studios now have to ensure theater owners that they’re best buds, that streaming won’t destroy everything, and they have enough strong, quality films to help keep the lights on as we head into the fall and winter season, COVID variants be damned All this week, we’re getting new standees, posters, and other promotional material, and we will have several studio presentations. In these presentations, we will have reports from the Twitter accounts of yes-men bloggers and industry folks praising all the upcoming movies from 2021 and beyond. True we won’t get any actual footage, barring a potential Spider-Man trailer after it got leaked online, but just a few nuggets of information can go a long way. As always, follow the golden BOT rules. Be nice, be respectful, don’t be a dick. Schedule (all times are PST, use your local timezone converter): Monday, August 23 Sony - 6-9 PM Tuesday, August 24 MGM/UAR - 9:15-11:30 AM Warner Bros. - 5-6:30 PM Wednesday, August 25 Neon - 8-9 AM Shang-Chi Screening - 9:30-11:45 AM Universal/Focus - 4:30-6 PM Thursday, August 26 Paramount - 10 AM - 12:15 PM Lionsgate - 2:45-4:15 PM

You're right. I forgot about calling out Fox20 when I should have. Sorry! @Fox20 your posts don't deserve to be here. Please do not go after BestPicturePlutoNash for supposedly being an MCU hater. These posts go nowhere and are demonstrably false. Do this stuff again, and you too will be threadbanned

Here's the reason: he's a likable guy who is easy to work with, causes no trouble on the set, and can deliver a competent, well-liked product that typically is financially successful. You don't have to like his movies, but it's really not that hard to figure out why Papa Feige would want him on another movie. Oh and by the way, when I told you "no", that means don't start a fight or do some condescending, passive-aggressive backtalk towards users, like you just did with Fox20. If you do this one more time, you will be threadbanned on the spot. This is your one and only warning.

I was thinking for a while that No Time to Die was going to be the first film to hit 200M and topple Bad Boys 3 (something about that just seemed poetic considering this was the first movie to delay itself way back when), but I do kinda feel like Respect's awful hold makes me nervous about older moviegoers coming back. I know there's the argument that there hasn't been anything super appealing for that demographic, which is fair, but I think there's been studies and polls showing older demos are much more cautious about Delta and heading out in general IIRC, and even though I didn't care for the movie, there's nothing objectionable for its target audience that WOM is that bad. The specialty market also isn't doing all that great, which generally skews more adult (something like Green Knight skews towards the younger, A24 hipster crowd). I dunno, I just think movies skewing older are gonna have a rough time, which that spells bad news for something like Bond (and also Top Gun, Ghostbusters, Gucci, West Side Story, etc.). I'm sure I might just be overly cautious about that though and obviously headlines should be more positive by October

I am demonstrably sorry for defending Scott Mendelson all those months ago

Well yeah both Shyamalan and Peele have fanbases, and both movies will do fine financially as low-budget titles, but it's not like Old opened that high. I've talked about this last week, but PAW Patrol is arguably the biggest non-Disney thing for little kids right now, at least in the States. They're all over retail shelves and my sister used to work at a daycare and she told me that those kids were crazy for those puppies and especially their toys. The battles of these four-year-olds over who gets to play with what were apparently quite intense, though she did get a few good opportunities to teach her kids the value of sharing.
