I was under the impression neither Avatar nor JC had any impact in and of themselves on pop culture? Does that immunize them to 'fanboyism'?

It's patently false that JC has been surpassed, financially or critically, (except under very narrow conditions).

I hope I'm not included in this libelous generalization, I loved BP, best MCU film since IM to my mind. The fact you have to fall back on comparing one man to an entire franchise though shows just how desperate certain positions have become.

I guess my demographic really is out of touch if this is the prevailing wisdom. The people I know who were mostly fans as a result of the OT all the way back in the 70s far prefer the PT to the ST, and unless IX really hits out the park I don't see much changing. What do I know of pop culture today though, I admit I'm ignorant on that front.

I think it's Mother Night, or some other book by Vonnegut, but "we are what we pretend to be", is an adage that I adhere to. If they are being insincere in espousing certain beliefs then I find it difficult (maybe impossible) to know whether or not it is so, without being able to read minds of course.

Sadly, no, only even found out 4chan existed last year (although again I'm in that rare group of people over the age of 40 who browse it). Their contrarian nature is quite obvious, but I do find that some of them are sincere in their 'worship' of JC/Avatar.

On average films where the MacGuffin is unobtainium gross the highest, so I'll go with that as first, then the rest.

I think the usual use is for critics associations, and the like. I'm fortunately in a position where I can now afford this kind of thing/know the right people. It really is a sad truth, and I wish it weren't so, but money does talk. The very notion of release dates not being global in this day and age still drives me mad.

The real fun is going to come when China starts to consistently beat US/CAN numbers, good luck trying to adjust those numbers for inflation. There will be a time where we might actually need to swap to the yuan.

The showing of the film I went to was only my business partner, some close friends, and I, obviously. We wouldn't have been legally allowed to open the doors to the public, just legally allowed to screen to a private audience that we've listed and had approval of prior. We set it up some years ago, mostly in response to the fact that we were tired of waiting months in some cases for the Oscar contenders to come out over here. I'd offer you an invite/some free tickets to a showing, but not sure how that would go down with the rules around here. I would never want to come across as shilling for my own cinema (for obvious reasons).
