Kimi no Na Wa (Your Name) could snatch a nomination

I've seen a lot of anime, and Your Name, to me, just looks like a highly polished one. What I saw looks good, but I think it would probably have to have 90% or above on Rotten Tomatoes before it could come anywhere remotely close to being nominated in this year of competition. There are higher profile anime films out this year, too... but after Boy and the World last year, I think anything can sneak in with enough critical acclaim.

  2. I've decided to make a new prediction list. I'm only putting down eight, like last time.

    Arrival

    Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk

    Birth of a Nation

    La La Land

    Loving

    Manchester by the Sea

    Moonlight

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

(That trailer last night... I think we might have an Oscar contender!)

    BEST NEWS today!

Animated film MY LIFE AS A COURGETTE submitted by Switzerland for the Foreign BP!

My favorite animated film of the year along with Red Turtle and Zoo

This has a shot at a nom in the animated category as well.

Wow! It speaks volumes about a film's quality if a whole country is willing to back the film in question.

  4. Little Men is currently getting amazing reviews. But will it be a contender?

Personally, I think it's got a shot at being like Boyhood. It's not as praised by any means, but it's certainly lauded nonetheless, so a great movie with a similar theme could hit the mark. Maybe.

(I just realized I'm like a conversation starter. Is that okay?)

  5. I'll be the one to point out the pop songs: Can't Stop The Feeling by Justin Timberlake for Trolls, Just Like Fire by P!nk for Alice Through the Looking Glass, and Saw It Coming by G-Eazy and Jeremih for Ghostbusters. None of those individual movies should be receiving Oscars, but we'll see what happens with the songs.

Hunt for the Wilder People is based on Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump, so it's not in the right category there.

Lion is supposed to be awful. Screened on TWC's yacht during Cannes and my friends heard people talking about how bad it was throughout the whole festival. The Austrailain Film Comission were promoting every film they had and explicitly didn't promote Lion.

It tested more than a year ago and people didn't like it then either. I think it is keeping its release date so that TWC looks like less of a mess.

    Thank you!

  7. Neel Sethi did one of the best Mowgli interpretations ever in the Jungle Book. I think he might be in the running for a nomination. Serious.

Neel Sethi was basically acting by himself in the movie, but not only did he be himself and allow his personality to be displayed, but he also demonstrates very good emotional acting. It's not a normal suggestion by any means, but I think he deserves it.
