  1. Maybe people around here believe sequels are better than the first one
  2. JKR: make 5 FB movies instead of a trilogy. WB: You're gonna bring us more money! JKR: No, I'm gonna make you return every cent you earned from HP.
  3. In the Heights flop because everybody is waiting for mystery Cannes blockbusters F9: F9 DOM opening > Chinatown 3 CHN opening = $399M.
  4. Unlike SARFT which controlled films and TV before before 2019, Film Administration don't set a box office goal of local over import. They only thing they concern is annual box office, and they are willing to let Hollywood rule big sessions as long as they realize local titles couldn't warm the whole market. Most western medias think the administration, which directly report to Publicity Department, is going to restrict Hollywood harder, but the truth is Hollywood had been more flexible in censorship and releasing until Monster Hunter. At this point, even Film Administration believe 1921 and The Pioners both on July.1 are probably going to be flops with just $50M lifetime expectation each of them. It looks less attractive compared to Beginning of the Great Revival, which also told a story about 1921 and made $60M in 2011. All-stars strategy is not so useful like the past. What Chinese audience need right now is genre movie like Wolf Warrior 2(action), The Captain(disaster), Operation Red Sea(war), My People, My Homeland(comedy). They expect Chinese Doctors, The Battle at Lake Changjin, but both of them could miss this summer as I heard. If that's the case, I hardly think Hollywood would be absent from middle summer. For Black Widow, it still unclear if local department is good with Disney and treat them well. But this is one of the few major titles Hollywood is going to put in summer. Are they still fine with a landscape without any blockbuster just like now? They set a annual box office goal about $9 billion in the early of the year.
  5. It's confirmed to get a theatrical release plan in China, but no one knows when.
  6. Very funny article. https://variety.com/2021/film/news/1921-boycott-shanghai-film-festival-1234994130/
  7. no they definitely not. 2.0 is a major loss here in terms of indian movies. I think Korea stuff will be popular once the ban get removed in the end of this year. Along with the Gods is expecting to have a release plan.
  8. funnest review I've seen on Douban about F9: Everything would be reasonable if it's a South Indian production.
  9. One major studio in China once wanted to import JW3 in 2019 or 2020. That didn't happen for some reasons. I heard the censorship was not a big problem. So it's probably about money or something else. With Donnie Yen, I hardly see those businessmen could ignore China so easy unless he only have few seconds in this movie.
  10. probably the whole movie is a infinite replay of these clips.
  11. Disney already gave up Cruella and will not spend one single penny here, which is not a surprise. All they can do is praying for Black Widow.
  12. I really expect upcoming Mission Impossible sequels will be the main HLW movies local audience very enjoy. Not $300M level. $200~250M each of them is what Tom Cruise deserves.
  13. https://comicbook.com/movies/news/f9-vin-diesel-paul-walker-john-cena-casting/ Look back this news, maybe Paul Walker was telling him just end the franchise considering the controversies around John Cena.
  14. Looks like ¥1,350~1425M lifetime for F9. Bit lower than H&S. Thank to good ER, it's still over $200M. I highly doubt a sequel would come out soon. Compared with less BO revenue, the biggest problem of the franchise is that Vin Diesel and the team couldn't deliver anything good or fresh. I've felt that way since the teaser of F9. And the whole movie just proved my feeling was right this time. Vin said in Chinese press tour that they would go China in F10, but I think this would only bring the franchise to the end more quickly due to the intense, and...Oh wait, F10 IS the end?! Then there is nothing to be alarmed about if they control the production budget under $20 million, or sell it to Netflix at the price of $2 billion.
  15. I highly doubt they would hit Furious 9 level on average. But yes, they are very important for Sep & Nov. Actually, local bureau want not only Shang-Chi and Eternals but also Nomadland. Disney rejected the release plan of Nomadland due to the controversies about Zhao, who also directed Eternals. If Zhao didn't handle a big Disney title, the studio probably didn't care about the online fights and kept releasing it in China. But the fate of Eternals was already tied up with that movie. Disney thought it would be better for them to cancel the release plan of Nomadland, giving Eternals a break. For Shang-Chi and Eternals, they should get permissions as long as the contents are not anti-China. But just like Nomadland, they could be missing if public awareness are too bad. Bureau, Disney or Marvel, none of them want to keep facing complicated situations.
  16. It's unclear at this point. Considering Black Widow is a big movie bureau need, I don't think they want to hurt this one unless Disney refuse to show them regret on the previous misstep. But one thing is certain: summer is very busy with so many patriotism(or party) related movies with many potential box office monsters. Also in public, it would be little bit harder for Disney to market it without causing small online battle due to Soviet Union plots. Essentially, they shouldn't have pushed it back.
  17. Just the opposite. In the view of local bureau, they need Hollywood to make the market look cooler in some periods. Although local blockbusters are now much stronger, most of them only debut on CNY, summer holidays or National Day holidays. So Hollywood become a need at this point. For Hollywood studios, they also need China especially considering North America still doesn't get out of pandemic totally. Film Bureau set a box office goal of ¥60 billion in 2021. So let Hollywood blockbuster go holidays is a great option. In the case of Black Widow, Disney want a great release date, and local bureau want a busy session. Black Widow on Apr.30 was almost happening. But then Disney told them they gotta push it back without a advanced notice. That messed them up. So Cruella become a victim. Local bureau know it's a small movie, so they chose this one as a "friendly remind". If Disney still keep being so “persisted” and "breaking word", they will get more punished.
  18. I'm not sure what happened on other cases. As far as I heard, local bureau is low efficiency on release work of import movies for unclear reasons. But for Curella which couldn't get a normal Friday opening, it's sort of a revenge move due to misstep of Black Widow. Disney asked labor day holiday for the Marvel title, and Bureau promised them. Then Disney pushed it back to July without a advanced notice, making holidays look so poor, so Cruella got this punch as a remind that you're nothing more than a dirty rat.
  19. Invite Wu Jing, Donnie Yen or any major local action stars in F10. Let them kill those annoying families one by one. Probably flop in everywhere else but easily $3 billion in China alone.
  20. PVOD never worked in China except Detective Chinatown TV series. So WB did not expect or earn anything from it here. I know some fans saw crazy numbers about Snyder Cut. But those means nothing. Many local stars keep telling press and fans each of their movies or TV shows have 10 billion-plus views with some kind of doubtful count methods
  21. Suicide Squad never had that hope as far as I know. WB China did consider PVOD for it like Snyder Cut.
  22. Marvel finally post the trailer a hour later. Still, they are not totally giving up. If I'm not wrong, it's hard to see the name of director and words like "Oscar winner person" even in English trailer or poster.
  23. Marvel official weibo doesn't post the teaser of Eternals yet, which is unusual. It might be a sign that Disney is considering giving up the release before things get worse.
