If this movie bombs, cinema deserves to die.

Not that i think that will happen. I predict 500M+ WW for it, i believe Dune 1 found a lot of new fans over the last 2 years and this beeing the first big movie of 2024 will help as well.

I agree that it has found more fans since then, pity that in the years since the streaming culture has cemented itself even further. Right now it’s not a great environment for theatrical releases, let’s just hope Dune 2 is one of these films that will be treated as an event by the GA.

I predict over 500M myself, but I’ve been wrong a lot this year.

    There is one yes:

In fact, I feel like half of the last couple of pages either belongs in there or in the Superman Legacy thread.

EDIT: OK, it's funny that the image that appears embedded for the Warner thread is the MCU timeline image.

  3. Looking at what you guys are saying, I feel like The Color Purple is going to win Christmas day but Wonka will win the whole period overall, right?

In the end I think both will do well, and this Christmas period overall seems like it's going to actually turn out OK compared to what many people were predicting even a few weeks ago, no?

The Japanese surprise really helps too.

  4. I’ve just watched the Honest Trailer that came out for this season 2 a couple of days ago and it was so negative and petty about the whole season that I almost questioned myself, wondering if I was incredibly out of touch or something since I usually agree with at least a couple of things in an Honest Trailer even if I disagree with the overall opinion, then I read the comments and everyone was commenting the same, about how the HT guys really went in looking for reasons to outright hate it.

The tide has really turned against the MCU when even YouTubers that got big thanks in big part to the MCU movies are looking for anything possible to hate in their movies and shows just so they can follow the trend.

Here are the 20 highest grossing films so far this year:

Barbie, Mario, ATSV, GOTG3, Oppy, TLM, AMWQ, JW4, SoF, ERAS, Indy 5, MI7, Tran:ROTB, Creed III, Elemental, Fast X, FNAF, HG:BoSS, TMNT, Scream VI

I think the common thread there is less nostalgia, but familiarity, straight up sequels or a well established brand/IP, or with the director (Nolan) or the star (ERAS). I’ve bolded the only 2 that were originals, and each of those got there with smaller openings and WOM/legs (and some secondary level of comfort with the studio)

To me, it’s yet another sign of a more discerning casual theatrical audience, less willing to invest the money and time and take a chance on something new, when there is so much original content available from streaming. And even some of those big brand names weren’t enough on their own to be really successful, without some level of quality or “freshness” to warrant the investment

Is discerning the right word here though? I always associated discerning with good quality, but isn't this less about quality and more about, as you put it, familiarity?

Given how Wish actually does seem to be doing pretty solid business overseas, I feel like there's a distinctly American brand of cynicism towards Disney right now which ended up dooming it domestically. I'm convinced everyone had their knives out for the movie going into it, and just weren't going to buy into what they were going for no matter how well it was executed. They've been in the news for a lot of not good reasons the last couple years, and I definitely think that was on the minds of many influential tastemakers.

The clear impression I got from the reviews is that critics disliked that Disney was essentially congratulating itself with this movie.

A lot of them felt the nostalgia play was too on the nose and there was literally nothing else going for it besides that, as the story was predictable and the songs were mostly just decent, without a clear break out (a couple of them have heavy rotations in my house though).

I feel once the meh reviews came out, the single adults who go watch good animations from Pixar and Disney decided to skip it due to its perceived bad quality, and the adults with kids made a decision to take their kids to watch Trolls instead, as they figure Wish will be on Disney+ soon anyway, and that’s very much Disney’s fault for training people to expect stuff to appear on Disney+ quickly.

The cynic in me thinks nostalgia played a larger role in Barbie and Mario's success. Even Barbie's original story wouldn't have helped an original character like Tyra Banks's role in Life-Sized.

FNAF too majorly owes it's success to nostalgia among Gen Z

It’s not just about nostalgia, it’s simply about being a recognizable IP. Most hits this year were something recognizable, that’s the trend.

I just know numbers are numbers and we can count on them.

Mary Poppins 2 made in Spain 1.4M dollars First weekend 21-23 dec.

Wonka It's opening with 5M + 2 weeks before Christmas.

So no OS at least It's not Mary Poppins 2.

Yup, the numbers OS (Europe) are showing great potential. I guess some people just don't pay attention to OS numbers, but look at this from Charlie himself:

So you're saying that Gunn's reboot is dead on arrival?

Or at least has a very steep hill to climb.

    This.

I kinda feel like people are willing to give anything Gunn makes a chance these days though.

I don’t think it’ll do huge numbers, but I feel like there’s a quiet sort of interest to see what Gunn can do with Superman. The kind of interest that’s not quite a hype, it should do very meh numbers if it isn’t a great movie, but if it’s a great movie I can see the narrative of Gunn saving Superman and good WOM take it close to GOG numbers.

Godzilla is doing great numbers, hope it continues to have fantastic legs, specially considering this Christmas season looks pretty bland. I just thought it was kinda funny that certain Youtuber thought the OW weekend was disappointing because it didn't reach Godzilla (2014) or King of the Monsters numbers.

I honestly believe that some grifters Youtubers got so used to calling things a bomb or flop to drive engagement up that they left any type of critical thinking behind a long time ago. Everything needs to be a bomb, needs to be hated, so that they can create a caps lock rage-bait title and drive up engagement.

This sort of Youtube content took a real nose dive in the past couple of years, it's very hard to find a reasonable movies (or gaming) Youtuber nowadays.

Did WB forgot they have this coming out on the 22nd?

They're probably focusing more on Wonka as their biggest possible hit of this season to be honest.

But also, I imagine it isn't easy to organize press stuff for this movie considering the whole Amber Heard thing, as well as awkward questions about the death of this cinematic universe and the future of Aquaman himself.

But I imagine we'll soon see some stuff with Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson together.

  11. The RT critics consensus sounds more like a synopsis this time around, but it's very positive:

    Quote

    Critics Consensus

With director Paul King at the helm and some solid new songs at the ready, the warmly old-fashioned Wonka puts a suitably sweet spin on the classic character while still leaving some room for the source material's darker undertones.

84% from 80 reviews, 7.4 by the way (top critics has 7.8 somehow)
