Tbh it looks like they're packing everything mainstream mario into a single movie, with a runtime of only 85 minutes, that's a lot of content to cover. I have a worry it might end up being overwhelming.
Also, the voices concern me, Pratt just sounds like Emmet from Lego Movie, and Anya sounds like herself, which personally doesn't feel like it matches the character visually. Everyone else sounded great though

Just booked my IMAX 3D showing for friday night, 7:30pm. I am impressed they managed to fit 5 IMAX screenings in a single day, even if the final one does end at almost 3am!
Interestingly, Cineworld seem to be limiting one advanced booking per unlimited card (even for completely different times). Never seen that before, I was able to book two Endgame screenings in advance back in 2019, that's the only time I may have encountered it.
Very few seats sold, but still there are some sold already. Plenty of showings in 3D, IMAX 3D, 2D, 2D audio described, Screen X 2D, 4DX and even a Subtitled 2D - which I haven't noticed for an English film before! Split for non-PLFs is about 50-50 3D to 2D
But yeah 37 showings planned for OD, and still 35 for Saturday. Cineworld definitely expecting this to be huge in the UK

Just randomly found this audience reaction from Paris to the first release of the teaser trailer (before a dolby showing of something, not Avatar 1). The atmosphere is just electric and hype inducing, and when they go absolutely silent before the title appears at the end...

Yes, but the main issue there was that almost all the good shots from the movie involving Pokemon were in that trailer.
The difference here is, it would be pretty damn impossible for the entire rest of the movie not to feature any of mario, luigi or the fantastical worlds

holy crap that surprised me!
I mean, it's Illumination so I expected this to be more aimed at kids, or perhaps the animation to be minions level (which is fine for a kids movie).
But my oh my they blew my expectations out the water with that trailer. When Mushroom Kingdom appears, I had little chills run down my spine, and I'm not even a big mario fan, I've played the mario kart games and super smash bros on DS but that was it.
This is going to do big big money. If the story is good enough, I genuinely feel Frozen 2 is in danger here. A lot of things still have to go right for that to happen, sure, but it is right on track as of now.

Based on what I saw at my showing, the response to the A2 scene was far and above the response for the original remastered.
The trailer doesn't do it justice just how good the quality of A2 is. I think the jump is enough for the average watcher to see the improvement over other CGI films released this year, let alone A1. After all, this is properly done CGI, not cheap outsourcing.
Tbh, I'd say it's a disservice to even say this is CGI.

Oh something I forgot to mention: very few walkups surprisingly. The number of people in the cinema was about the same as the number of bookings when I checked at lunchtime today. Maybe tomorrow will go better for walkups.

Alright got back from primetime showing in IMAX 3D. Lot's of feedback! I'll try and be objective where possible.
So, to begin, the screen was about half full in the end. Which is a good opening for a normal release, and this is a re-release no less.
When the BBFC rating card appeared and it said "Avatar (2022)" there was noticeable discussion, I also heard the people near me say "Why does it say 2022 when it came out like 20 years ago". Despite the fact that it's not that old, it means people associate this with nostalgia, and also that many of the people there did not know it was remastered.
The IMAX screen was noticeably brighter too. When the Avatar 2 trailer came on beforehand it was noticeably brighter than when I'd seen it before, really made a difference.
Regarding remastering, I have watched Avatar many times at home (most recently last year), and yet I could not notice it was remastered. Not sure what they did, but it didn't look any different to how I remembered it.
Notable scenes from A1 which still pack a massive punch visually and thematically:
- Climbing up the mountains leading to Jake's first flight, that still hits beautifully
- Destruction of Hometree still looks amazing, a great spectacle and the detailing on the tree as it falls is brilliant
- Grace's death, with Jake's speech and the gathering of the clans - this whole montage is just great to watch on a big screen
- Ewya has heard you, that line still packs emotion even after so many watches
The CGI still holds up great, I did notice some clunky movements at times, but it's noticeably better than most CGI you see today still. In particular, the water scenes in A1 actually look pretty damn good, I didn't remember how good they looked.
Personally, I always try and watch in 3D if I can, but it really didn't bother me much this time. It's a trade off, and I heard others muttering afterwards too, the 3D hurts peoples eyes, and the glasses are not that comfortable, but the level of immersion is much greater. You feel part of the film, not watching it. I did notice some annoying clunks in the 3D though, for example some "flat" computer screens had depth applied to them, and some printed photos had depth applied to them. This was offputting since you would not expect those to have depth; a post-prod blunder I suspect.
Now, onto the midcredits scene.
Non-spoilerly stuff:
When it came on, people started coming back in and sitting at the front to watch it. The room fell silent, and for a solid two and a half minutes, the jaws of almost everybody in the room just dropped. Including mine. The realism and world building is absolutely phenomenal, like literally nothing you have ever seen before. But even better, it doesn't feel like a documentary - it feels like a cinematic, yet incredibly realistic, world. After it finished, there was lots and lots of chatter, more than after the film itself! I waited till the very end when the credits finished (there was nothing else extra) and another group which remained wanted to come back and watch it again tomorrow - not Avatar, but the 2.5 minute scene from A2!
Spoilery stuff for A2:
SpoilerThe scene I had was a group of girls and a group of boys swimming underwater. Very subtle background music, and the first 2 minutes was almost no sound at all, you just immediately fell in love with the visuals. The detail in the creatures and foliage is just something you've never seen before - even in A1. It really was phenomenal to watch and just observe. There was some brief conversations and chatter between the kids towards the end, generally seemed natural and good.
Honestly, I think people will be raving so much about the A2 scene that it could drive legs into A1's rerelease as WOM spreads. It just transports to such a fantastical world that you can't help but want more of it. If the response from what I've seen is representative of the whole A2 movie, then wow, Cameron's done it again.
TL;DR;
I was ever so slightly disappointed in A1, because the remaster wasn't as noticeable as I would've liked. Then the A2 scene came along and minds were blown out of the water.

My favourite screen (other than screen 6 obvs) are 3 and 4, aka the old "premium" screens because you get so much leg room.

Oh god the dead pixels is so annoying! Screen 10 is the absolute worst for it too, there's like 4 or 5 dead zones it's disastrous.
Which showing are you going to? Might end up in the same one 🤣 (I'll probably be going to 7:30 Saturday, but haven't confirmed yet)

This is showing that the people booking now are happy enough to watch in 3D.

Saturday is looking somewhat empty right now, only ~20 seats sold. Friday though has been steadily increasing. No initial rush, no slowdown, no speed up. About ~70 tickets sold for that so far.

Just got back from a late night showing of Doctor Strange in IMAX. And for the first time in 4 years, having watched over 350 films in the cinema (I've had unlimited passes in the uk), this was the first time there were no trailers.
I was gonna watch DS anyway, but specifically booked imax to watch the Avatar 2 trailer cause I'm hyped for it, and yet Cineworld decided they weren't gonna show that trailer or any trailer, just so they could go home 20 minutes earlier. Surely Disney would've made it contractual?
Either way, I'm now having to settle and wait to watch the trailer when it releases online

Welp, guys it's over. If even Jimbo has lost all faith because domestic can't even make more than 1.15 million dollars, then I guess Avatar is cancelled. 😭
