  1. There is no surprise here, no a big surprise that a company like Disney would act in the current climate. The issue is the current climate, that is not apt for nuance and a gradation in the punishment because there is no "judge" and fair process. That said Disney != Hollywood, I doubt they would have not made a Polansky movie, they did cut link with Weinstein and that current group would have probably not worked with him either. I doubt that if you make a Hollywood polling will not show a lot of support or if you have James Gunn show up to a Hollywood event that he would not get a loud applause (like Dustin Hoffman got after is stories got out or I imagine Freeman can still get).
  2. I would imagine endangering life with drunk and coke speed driving is considered worst would push and asked if it is. It is less fun to engage and the big difference is written form vs talked about. If someone would have filmed themselves doing the drug, getting drunk and speed driving, made it available on the Internet and Gunn would have been known to tell those type of joke but without any public record of it, the situation would be inversed for the very same actions.
  3. Could you imagine if they start to fire adult cartoon comedy people for offensive joke....... they are in the very product they make on the network.
  4. WGA rules are clear and strong enough to force them to credit it to is name I would imagine, same for residual.
  5. I imagine a big proportion of people hanging out on a movie message board went to see a Shane Black, Del Toro, Laika, good reviewed JAmes Brook produced comedy in theater, you probably did, I did,... I get the saying that to the more casual, but on a movie message board ? Those who didn't not are probably in the people celebrating sequel and the I only see Disney movies in theater.
  6. 7. Not sure a company can make more to someone than firing them when they commit legal offense.
  8. Is making an Htiler satire movie right now, would make a realy good replacement I would think, but I would like to think he would refuse to scab Gunn job, except if there is something we do not know about.
  9. That seem like an interesting position. Outrage culture should end but still be high enough for old bad jokes of bad taste tweets to cost the job of someone ? Where would be the line ?
  10. Well if my point are going into pro-firing gun that ok, but I do not see it. Twitter being a very small paltform and him not having follower, is saying that when he was making is joke it was to a very specific audience, to put it to an extreme if he would have made those joke in parties inside is house with is friend, would you still be for Disney firing him ? The chance of hurting a lot of people that find those joke offensive or triggering of bad past experience was really small, when is audience was a close one that liked those joke (thus following him on twitter), would be different now a day, because now people would re-tweet, media would print and reach people for who those jokes are not for.
  11. Gibson kind of saved is career when he could not get insured anymore: Downey was able to return to the big screen after Mel Gibson, who had been a close friend to Downey since both had co-starred in Air America, paid Downey's insurance bond for the 2003 film The Singing Detective (directed by his Back To School co-star Keith Gordon).[62] Gibson's gamble paved the way for Downey's comeback and Downey returned to mainstream films in the mid-2000s with Gothika, for which producer Joel Silver withheld 40% of his salary until after production wrapped as insurance against his addictive behavior. Even if Gibson had to stop is theatrical play with Downey because he got arrested: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/935383.stm
  12. Not has a moral defense of the other studio, but just in term of situation the other studio 1) has less the family friendly image to worry about like you mentionned 2) Not a recent precedent like Rosanne augmenting the pressure and fueling the situation 3) And a bit of Cynicism, but for other studio's a director that was turning out over 800m global box office success making a sequel for them would a relatively much bigger deal, would be much harder to let it go like that for them than it is for Disney on their incredible current hot streak. Can you imagine Paramount in the same situation. Well they have an history, when they refused to release Fahrenheit 9-11, it felt a lot because George Bush brother was Florida governor. That said it is pure speculation, they certainly didn't fire Rosanne to appease Trump administration, so it is certainly not a necessary condition, anything that is controversial and get traction seem to make them react.
  13. Obviously society should not have have him be alone in kids ever (and not just in a work context) and not be in a position of authority over kids in any way in a professional context. If there is a logical link between the crime and the work that make sense. Or a fraudster and working at a bank. It is fully ok for a society to protect itself from an danger with a good enough indication of risk. But that is not what it seem to be about at all here and in many example people bring, it seem to be in term of punitive attitude without a direct link into the goal of making society safer.
  14. Illegal Gun possession, entering is neighbor house and fell asleep in there bed, stuff like that, all non-violent charge I think. Now is taking heroin worst or less worst than a bad Joke when you had no audience for it on twitter in american society ?, could not tell you. Right now it feel you would be better off that people find you try to kill someone when you were 17 in a criminal gang and selling drugs than caught having made bad jokes or having grabbed an ass while drunk in a party.
  15. The idea that people with a criminal record should not have work is quite extraordinary, I know the USA does not have the same rehabilitation attitude than most of the world, but it must be quite something to be an ex-convict there. Would it not be in a world without some social net... quite similar to a death sentence for people not already rich ?, many would have added 6 month to 2 year's of jail time instead of loosing a career I would bet.
  16. Like many said you can certainly make a joke about racism (watch a Dave Chapelle show or the latest Chris Rock, it is like 20+% of the material), about 9/11, about rape, etc... Make a racist joke that is quite different and much more edgy, if you cannot install the feeling that it is not motivated by actual racism.
  17. Did they ? They acted so soon and with what looked pre-packaged response that they acted like they expected it, had already a PR response written knowing chance were high it would happen.
  18. And he is already I would image rich enough and big enough to find work outside the family friendly Disney. But Gunn personal case itself is not really the issue for most people commenting here (outside maybe for is friend/family coming to is defense), the precedents it set is quite dangerous. It is the social norm being set that worry people. By 2030, if progress goes well and we make social equality / realization / grow, a lot of what is seem good raunchy humors will became unacceptable by then, who will be able to write a Family Guy episode, South Park or a Deadpool movie that will have never made jokes 15 year's before that were on the good side of the line then but not anymore ? Those people jobs is often exactly about finding, redefining, going over the acceptable lines. Louis CK child molester/racism monologue on SNL in 2015 was great when he did it, one day it could become unacceptable, to go back in time when it will be the case would be imo an obvious error. Disney is already really a cookie cutter type of extremely safe stuff, one that make it rather obvious why they would fire Gunn even for old comments because of the image they need to keep. That would not be a big problem if they would have stayed their own rather small part of the industry, has they become bigger and bigger (with a spike when they will get Fox), that become worrisome about how risk free the mainstream artistic output could become.
  19. It is obviously debatable, the general point being that jokes are not as bad as actual anything. Would people believe Rosanne joke attempt was not revealing / showing actual racism it would be different. Obviously Gunn having raped a child would be worst than just being racist. There is many other difference. Gunn made those when twitter was a small platform and virtually unknown, getting 2-3 like on is tweet back in the 2009-2010 days: Back then, for him it was not that far to the equivalent of doing jokes among friend, to a very specific audience loving that suff (that watched is niche movies/stuff of that style and personal friend), it was not @someone and so obviously over the top to not be possible for the reader to not get it is an attempt to make a joke. The other is not accused of doing racial charged humor, but to be racist and to have made a racist comment, (like Milo was accused to take a pro-hebephilia stance not make a hebephilia joke), did it on what was a giant platform and while being currently engaged by ABC/Disney. Both are overreaction from Disney / should have accepted it when they hired that type of people ( I mean Rosanne took picture disguised as Hitler cooking like Jews in her oven and a long list) or not hired them without the condition of stopping social media or something, but they are different incident. You do not get to say you cannot have nuance between 2 different event without giving a argumentation to why that would be the case.
  20. That being said for some specially Pratt, that is a lot, lot of money to leave on the table to not do a Guardian 3 I would imagine, plus future Marvel project and Disney movies. Disney will get so big post Fox acquisition, that for actor to take a strong stand against them is quite the commitment.
  21. In general enforcing contract to make stars do stuff they do not want too, when they have some good legitimate PR reason and already a lot of money can be an unpleasing situation for a studio and the world press tour can become a mess if you use contractual obligation to force them. If the actor play it well, in private deal, ready to wait 8 month to make the rehiring official once the storm, Fox transaction past, PR strategy in place about Gunn having changed we overreacted, artist liberties of thought and expression are important, etc... maybe a rehiring. Because little money has been spent has of now, cancelling the movie alltogether could also happen.
  22. Is that true, he can probably pull hits in a more diverse range of movies if that you mean (Flight for example, being a huge hits and making Fence work), but for pulling more hits in general: In all Denzel career one movie made more than half of Rampage unadjusted, chance are good Skyscraper will finish over unadjusted all of Denzel filmography. 23. It has a strong correlation, but probably not an 100% hard rules: https://www.psychologistworld.com/cognitive/black-humor-linked-to-high-intelligence-study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5383683/ Black humour preference and comprehension are positively associated with higher verbal and nonverbal intelligence as well as higher levels of education. Emotional instability and higher aggressiveness apparently lead to decreased levels of pleasure when dealing with black humour. You can read the study here: https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2Fs10339-016-0789-y.pdf
  24. Death baby jokes, rape jokes, etc... were so common circa 2000-2010 (it was a genre in itself), I imagine a lot of people are deleting that decade from their social account the last few days.
