Lovely new avatar, @Carlangonz! Celebrating the win in Venice?

Thanks! Yassss, so happy for the win. Saw it last weekend and it truly is beautiful film, perfectly crafted and very emotional, one of the best experiences i've ever had in a movie theater, loved it.

Other movies? Alfa should not do that bad with about 20M but I think this is the weekend where El Meg gest chomped to 11M just because The Nun will get all the big screens (including that Rare Imax run)

About half of those numbers for both.

Do you think The Predator has any chance on breaking through on the 21st? I'm really looking forward to see that one as well as Crazy Rich Asians

Maybe, I'm expecting solid numbers and even bigger numbers than Covenant but nothing jaw-dropping.

  4. $69.6M OD for The Nun, easily a new high record for horror beating It by 26% and last year's Annabelle: Creation by over 120%! Although is hard to compare since those two opened on thursday.

Anyway... this bodes well for another $200M+ opener, first for horror and among Top 10 all-time

So... I'm basically terrible at this¡ Alpha in first place?? with 33 Million? Didn't see that coming really.

Mexican Movies have had a good run, at least two movies have been in the top ten since the last weekend of July. This week it was the turn of "Ana y Bruno" and "Tiempo Compartido" (although I did see the last one and didn't like it. Found it boring, pretentious and ultimately blah... and going out the theater the man behind me turn to his wife and said: "Well... this was really terrible")

Also I saw the trailer for El Dia de la Union (hadn't heard about that movie before seeing it). My question is: Will people rally behind it (as it looks intense and it will most surely be corny) or will it be shunned completly due to the memory of the recent events? whatever the outcome I expect a lot of crying in theaters

Speaking of mexican cinema, this year was the shortest time for local productions to reach $1B in box office, the number came before this weekend. The all-time record belongs to 2013 with $1.3B

Ana and Bruno unfortunately was a flop, and one that everyone saw coming. The movie costed over $100M so was totally expected, its only hope are overseas markets.

As for El Día de la Unión it could be anything but Kuno Becker is box office poison lol and it really looks bad, so not expecting much, but stranger things have happened.

  6. AUGUST 31 – SEPTEMBER 2. ALPHA OPENS ON TOP AND MEG GOES FOR $400M BEFORE THE NUN ARRIVES.

    Alpha

-Fine opening I guess? Should reach $70M+, not exactly a hit or a flop

    The Meg

-Insane run this one is having, unlike most of its comps it hasn’t collapsed in any weekend (not yet) and now is running 16.86% behind San Andreas and should finish just over/under $400M, apparently barely is going to make it.

I've already purchased my tickets for The Nun in Imax for Friday the 7th (first horror movie I will ever see in Imax, that's strange). I'm thinking at least 130M for opening weekend as we haven't had any good horror movie in a long time and this one has Bichir's Power (hahaha).

    For this weekend I expect:

    1. El Meg (4peating) with anything between 25-28M

    2. Mile 22 probably can get to 18M

    3. Alpha with something like 14-15M

    4. Slenderman with 12M

That's a good prediction, the movie has many things working for its success: it comes from weak weekends and won't have much competition after its release, also the religious topic is going to draw a lot of people. I expect something between $120M-$140M, which would be higher than Annabelle: Creation's 4-Day opening.

Why will they re-release the MCU films in Mexico? Because of the 10th anniversary? Good for Coco for that re-release. That film deserves US$1B but getting US$800M worldwide is also excellent especially for an original film.

Yup, 10th anniversary celebration. They're showing 16 titles, the only missing ones are Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor and Ant-Man and the Wasp. Three movies per weekend, only a handful of theatres (mid 100s) and one show per day.

  9. AUGUST 24-26 WEEKEND. MEG WINS TOPS THE CHART FOR THIRD WEEKEND IN A ROW. SLENDERMAN DOES FINE AND TEEN TITANS MEH.

    The Meg

-Running 53.6% ahead of Rampage at the same point of release and 19.9% behind San Andreas showing that the movie keeps overperforming. Something interesting from both comps is that both collapsed on their third frames, the former due to Infinity War and the later because faced Jurassic World, on the other hand Meg had a hold even better than last week. Conclusion: Studios should stop over-crowding the may-july period and release more titles on august!

    - Currently is looking to finish its run with at least $370M but could go as high as $390M, $400M is a long shot but september is coming loaded with many releases starting with The Nun on Sep 7 (btw tickets went on sale earlier today).

    Slender Man

-Behind this year’s comps: 33% behind A Quiet Place and 51% under Insidious: The Last Key but 42% above Hereditary and on par with Winchester. Already surpassed totals for Jigsaw and Happy Death Day although the last two are useless since one was C rating and the other one was limited.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

-47% behind The Emoji Movie and this week should pass Ninjago’s total. Meh performance, might develop legs but don’t see it in a Christopher Robin level and Warner probably decides to pull it out from theatres in a couple of weeks.

    The Spy Who Dumped Me

-16.5% behind last year’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard, should pass $40M

    # MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
    1 The Meg $42.80 -39,14% $322.88 $17.19 788.3K 6.34
    2 Slender Man $28.18   $28.18 $1.49 552.19K 522.19K
    3 Teen Titans Go! To The Movies $22.75   $22.75 $1.20 466.67K 466.67K
    4 The Spy Who Dumped Me $14.97   $14.97 $794K 251.32K 251.32K
    5 The Equalizer 2 $14.42 -45,37% $53.61 $2.82 244.08K 986.84K
    6 Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again $10.87 -41,65% $37.24 $1.96 151.73K 551.18K
    7 Ya Veremos $8.21 -48,16% $187.72 $10.01 160.46K 3.89
    8 Christopher Robin $7.3 -43,41% $89.16 $4.73 143.18K 1.79

    My thoughts for this weekend:

El Meg - 38M (just to say something as I have not make any good prediction with this one)

The Spy who Dumped Me - 22M

Slenderman: 17M (Just because Mexico LOOOOOVEEEES HORROR)

    Equilizer 2: More Equal - 15M

    Mamma Mia 2 - 12M

And finally, the bet will have to be paid and the Minion will enjoy his tacos al pastor

I think Slenderman can do better (not much) and Spy Who Dumped Me worst but both predictions looks reachable.

Surprisingly Teen Titans Go got the Christopher Robin treatment and went low on both screens and theatres, should be looking at low-mid teens.

Out of new releases and holdovers wouldn't shock me if Grease re-release shows up in Top 10 this weekend; since tickets went on sale theatres around me have been selling it like crazy and saw a lot of sold-outs today across the city.  At this point would shock me if doesn't make it.

Haven't seen a drop like Christopher Robin's in ages!!! Disney = poca fe.

Yup, was a huge mistake to give it such a small release, they thought it would be another WiT but to be honest nostalgia for Pooh is considerably big in here and it could have doubled what it's currently grossing.

  12. AUGUST 17-19 WEEKEND. MEG REPEATS ON TOP AS IT KEEPS OVERPERFORMING; DECENT OPENING FOR EQUALIZER 2 AND MEH FOR HERE WE GO AGAIN.

    The Meg

    - Running 22.06% behind San Andreas and 41.81% ahead of Rampage at the same point of release. Aims to $360M+ by the end of its run

    - It doesn’t have competition but its screen count (2,290) will see a big reduction given upcoming special events (Grease and MCU re-releases) and releases and also will lose audience as kids and teens are incorporating to school.

    The Equalizer 2

    - Opening 63.36% above Sicario: Day of the Soldado on past july and 33.87% ahead of first Equalizer. Should come close to $70M+, so… good numbers but nothing spectacular.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

    - Low screen and theater count, it affected it badly but it could be another Christopher Robin and show strong legs the upcoming weeks.

    # MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.

  13. AUGUST 10-12 WEEKEND. MEG DEVOURS COMPETITION WITH A JAW-DROPPING OPENING; FALLOUT INSTALLS NEW FRANCHISE HIGH AND HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 ABOUT TO BECOME SONY’S BIGGEST TITLE EVER.

    The Meg

-Huge opening, among best for Warner and currently pacinf 34% ahead of Rampage, 22.2% behind San Andreas, 8.7% over Skull Island, 28.4% above Godzilla.

    - Thanks to lack of direct competition should swim right to $270M+, one of the break-outs of the year.

    Ya Veremos

-Weak weekdays and hold for the weekend, due to it now is running behind Hazlo como Hombre despite a bigger opening, now may struggle to $200M if doesn’t recovers this week.

    Mission: Impossible – Fallout

-Today should pass Rogue Nation as the highest grosser in the M:I franchise

    Hotel Transylvania 3

-Today is the Sony’s title with most admissions beating Spider-Man 3 (10.17M) and Thursday should be the highest grosser going over Homecoming’s $485M.

$6.2M OW for The Meg!!! That's about 115M lc. Mega-hit.

    :ohmygod:

I had the high end on $110M but wow... didn't expected that internal multi; it's very rare for non-animations/locals which means big buzz.

Also, kudos to Warner's marketing team, they've been building hype for this since July.

    • Thanks 1
  15. It's official, 16 MCU titles are returning to screens on August last week and all across September, although it'll be a Cinépolis exclusive. The only movies that won't be showing are Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor and Ant-Man and the Wasp (well, that one is still going at some locations).

This is the second time Disney organize re-releases of their Marvel titles after they did it back in 2015 previous to the release of Age Of Ultron.

Well, too bad about Christopher Robin. I don't think it will get to 100M at all. That will need a miracle¡

Ya Veremos will be the highest grossing Mexican movie this year. Don't see anything else doing more than 200M

And for the new openers, I really want to see The Meg. I love those kind of movies but what will it gross OW? 25-30? Can it get to 35? Have seen a lot of promotion for that one but then I may be biased.

Judging by the screen count I'm sure Warner is looking for something in the $60M-$80M range and i do believe can reach those numbers for the weekend

  17. AUGUST 02-05 WEEKEND. YA VEREMOS: 4TH HIGHEST LOCAL OPENER EVER; CHRISTOPHER ROBIN FAILS AND TRANSYLVANIA 3 CLOSE TO 10M ADMISSIONS

    Ya Veremos

-4th highest opening for a local film only behind No Se Aceptan Devoluciones, ¿Qué Culpa Tiene el Niño? and No Manches, Frida. Highest of the year beating La Boda de Valentina.

    - Should pass $200M with ease, might even reach $250M+ if carries good wom.

    Mission: Impossible – Fallout

-Running 19.28% ahead of Rogue Nation at the same point of release due to a higher ticket price average result of good numbers from IMAX and PLF screens and a better weekend hold.

    - Among other comps: thanks to better weekdays is running at same pace as Mummy last year, already surpassed the lifetime gross of Fury Road and running 22% ahead of Spectre. For a spy film is doing exceptionally well.

    Christopher Robin

-Ended the weekend a bit over 1,000 screens so… not good, probably Disney smelled another Wrinkle in Time –and not just here but worldwide- and decided to go low on both theatres and screens.

    - Don’t know what use as comp; is right in the middle between Tomorrowland (39% under/$100M total) and Wrinkle in Time (43% over/$40M total).

    Hotel Transylvania 3

-Should pass 10M admissions by Thursday or Friday becoming Sony's third title to pass the mark and the first in 11 years after Spider-Man 3! $500M will be a photo finish

    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

-Officially now is the 10th highest grosser of all-time, rest as #14 at the admissions chart.

    # MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
    1 Ya Veremos $61.06   $73.10 $3.92 1.14 1.39

  18. According to estimates by Deadline and Screen Daily:

Christopher Robin opened with $26M across its 4-Day opening and #3 after Ya Veremos and Fallout

Fallout went over my estimate and should be between $170M-$175M by tomorrow. Crazy internal multi for the FSS

Hotel Transylvania 3 is now over $450M

    Darkest Minds opened with $18M

The First Purge is now close to $180M after a hard drop this frame

JW:FK and AMATW are now out of the weekend's Top 10, former with $690M and the later with $282M

  19. Unexpected weekend...

Ya Veremos is looking for a $65M-$75M 4-Day weekend, biggest opening for a local this year and higher than past year's Hazlo como Hombre.

Mission Impossible aims a 55%-60% drop, but keeps tracking towards a $210M+ final number.

Christopher Robin couldn't even top 1,000 screens -it barely went over 800- and it'll finish the 4-Day between $24M-$28M
