I feel like a good portion of the reason La La Land lost last year was because the backlash against the film became so heated

    This

Many voters choosed Moonlight not because they thought that it was their favorite or to support the topic, it was because they wanted La La Land not to win and it seemed the best option.

Never in a thousand years i've would imagined a Eugenio Derbez comedy over a Justice League movie. That shows how damaged the DC brand is and how strong still is Derbez after almost two decades doing comedy.

Wonder when Overboard is going to debut. Don't think IW damage it, ¿Qué Culpa Tiene el Niño? didn't had issues with CW so anything can happen.

What is going on with movie studios in Latin America, just read in the Brazil thread that Coco may be boycotted because Disney wants a higher % of revenues or something like that! Frustrating!

    :ohmyzod:

That's so annoying. Can't believe how they can act like that, specially there, where Coco can do a great result, tho possibly they (Disney) decided to do that knowing that would be a success based on numbers of other Latin American countries.

I hope doesn't affect other Disney releases

  6. So, things between Universal and Cinépolis still cold. PS for Fifty Shades Freed started on Cinemex while on Cinépolis isn't even listed as an upcoming release, same situation with every single Universal/Warner 2018 movie, from Disaster Artist until Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Everything is more tense as JL was practically an underperformer and Cinépolis had to pay a bigger % from gross and a considerable fee for getting late the copyright licenses.

Hope everything can solve soon so JW, Nun and Grinch doesn't lose spots on Top 10 2018.

  7. WEEKLY REPORT. JUMANJI, COULD IT GROSS $300M+? JEDI MAY CAN'T DO THAT.

This week due to holidays all movies in chart were benefited on their weekdays; had amazing increases on Christmas Day and helped them with mediocre weekend numbers.

    Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

    - $300M are possible with New Year Day and January 5th coming. Kids return to school on Jan 8th so everything it's clear for Rock & Co.

    Ferdinand

    - May end on $130M-$150M land. Upcoming competition is Tadeo 2 next weekend.

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    - $300M are likely to be missing. Severe loss of screens the last 2 weeks and next weekend are hurting its run.

    The Greatest Showman

    - Great start for a musical, $200M+ are quite possible. Hugh Jackman, his power!

TLJ is bringing Star Wars back to the dark days of the prequels. Kennedy & Rian Johnson have f*cked up.

I don't think you can blame exactly to quality of the movie for the low OS number. As someone said: SW is a big thing only in Europe, Japan and Australia & New Zealand.

Asian and Latin American markets: the areas with fast growing markets don't care for SW, not even for sci-fi movies. China and Mexico proved that doesn't matter if you put a local actor in your movie (Donnie Yen, Diego Luna), that's not enough for people to show up. Plus, if you have a lot of competition people will choose it over the eight installment of a saga they don't know or don't care.

Lucasfilm should be worried for working on its domestic audience.

Avatar 2 is going to be the most interesting upcoming film to watch what happens at the box office. There's about six different ways I see it going.

I'm really not looking forward its domestic performance, i'm more intrigued for its China performance.

3D without glasses? That's gonna easily break the FOTF records there.

  10. WEEKLY REPORT. JEDI VERSUS NEW OPENERS.

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    - Surpass $200M this weekend and Rogue One on next week.

    - Still running 33% behind TFA and 20% above RO. $320M with TFA scenario and $280M under RO legs. Since competition steals it audience and screens i don't think we can lock $300M yet.

    Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Slow start. Hard to predict, anywhere between $65M-$80M.

  11. I think the obstacle for openers this weekend is Christmas Eve, since this year is on Sunday; the most attended day of the week for theatres, a large part of gross will see affected. Saturday is a day of madness cause all of the 'last-minute' buys so there's plenty of people in theaters but don't know how much.

Weekdays are going to be more interesting than the weekend.

  12. DECEMBER 15-17 WEEKEND. THE LAST JEDI OPENS BELOW TFA; GREAT START FOR WONDER.

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    - 34% drop from TFA on 4-Day OW. -30% compared to 3-Day.

    - Following TFA track it finishes at somepoint between $320M-$330M. If performance more a la RO its end is $285M-$300M. It certainly has more competition than TFA but being a chapter can help it to go over $300M.

    Wonder

    - First $100M grosser for Corazón Films Distribution since NYSM 2? It has a nice shot.

    Coco

    - Will pass $1.1B by a really close gap. No signs of a re-expansion

Today (Tue) was last day of the year for schools in the country, so that may reflex tomorrow, especially being day of cheap tickets.

Sorry for late update, too many exams and projects!

This thursday opens: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Ferdinand, Cuando los Hijos Regresan and Orpheline
