  1. I’m seeing some really high predictions here. Guys and Gals, please do not set yourselves up for disappointment when it does fantastic numbers but not the numbers you put out there. Those thinking it will do 200 million opening week will be crestfallen if it does under 150. No meltdowns please! The board can get sort of toxic when that happens.

With that said, I am so happy to see Doc Ock back.. Spider Man 2 is my favorite Soider-Man movie and one of my favorite movies period, so I am praying this does gangbusters.

Anyone experience this too?? Apparently it is a worldwide issue.

    https://www.cbr.com/eternals-facebook-preventing-movie-check-in-posts/

Facebook users around the world are reporting that their check-in posts about going to see the Eternals are for some reason being flagged as spam.

That’s odd. Maybe because people are spamming the same message? The algorithm may sense it’s not organic.

can't believe top critics sunk to 35% on RT , didn't think it was possible, but with no other big targets this year maybe Eternals will be Razzie contender even if undeserved for film or Jolie

That is really rotten. Wow! I can’t stand the Razzies. Some of my favorites have been nominated in the past. I know the RT score is bad, but the audience metrics are the real surprise for me. I wonder how Disney will handle the sequel? Will they change the tone and If so, how? Will they move on from the Eternals? Luckily, the MCU has earned a lot of currency with the general audience, so there’s a lot of trust that they’ll do the right thing and correct any perceived missteps with this movie.

FINALLY A DEMO BREAKDOWN - and here's another huge problem for the Eternals - I was right - unlike normal MCU, it was not a diverse breakdown - plus as per regular this year, almost no families...13-45 white male was the predominant audience (and yes, again Deadline doesn't add to 100% for the breakdown, but let's assume they dropped the other category)...that's a total fail by Disney b/c this movie shouldn't have been that - somehow Disney drove away the diversity they were trying to attract, when Venom 2 had no such problems just last month...

"Other stats on Eternals: updated demos through Saturday were 61% males, 39% females, 55% between 18-34 and 53% under 25. General audience diversity make-up per PostTrak was 51% Caucasian, 23% Hispanic and Latino, 13% African American and 9% Asian. General audience made up 85% of the pic’s business while parents and kids under 12 combined were 15%. Overall 3 1/2 stars and 78% positive, with a 60% definite recommend — not Marvel’s finest moment. Kids under 12 liked it better at 86% and four stars. Men under 25 made up 31% of the crowd (76% grade), Men over 25 30% (78%), Women under 25 were 22% (80%) and women over 25 at 17% (who liked it the most at 81%).

This is all so interesting. In the Eternals thread, I kind of bought into the critics v ga argument being made by some. But when you look at the critical reception and more scientific ga metrics, it seems both weren’t too enthusiastic about this movie. It’s kind of baffling, as I thought this movie was better than other MCU entries- like Thor 2. The only thing I can figure is that although the cinematography was on point. I mean the movie is visually fantastic, but visually darker than most MCU films. There are more dark and gloomy skies, and dark tones.

  5. Some people are really losing it in this thread. Wow! Anyway, I’m going to see Eternals tonight. Every movie studio has its hits and misses. Was bound to happen for the MCU too. Relax! The box office numbers aren’t even bad. It’s not the movie’s fault that some people were ready to crown it “the first 100 mil opener of the pandemic era”.

    Moderation

    ENOUGH

Not the Wonder Woman 1984 thread. Not the RT thread. Not the "verified audience" thread. None of that crap. If you can't help yourself with talking about this stuff, then leave, because I'm not taking this anymore. I'm coming down with a fever, and I really don't want to deal with this stuff on top of it.

Wow! Here’s to hoping you feel better. I will stop now. Will stay focused on the Eternals.

Because literally everywhere on the internet the film was ripped to shreds for how bad it was, and every single person I know also didnt like it.

The amount of people that liked WW84 from all accounts is in the minority.

I don’t think we want to get into a majority v. minority argument based on your anecdotal evidence. Maybe you visit places on the net that confirm your priors? Maybe your friends think like you? RT verified score for WW84 is 73%. RT overall critics rating is 58%, so a majority of critics were fresh. The average top critic score on RT IS 71%. Metacritic score is 60. Even the low IMDB score of 5.4 which is slightly greater than 5/10. So I would disagree that a majority of people hated it. I think the movie was divisive with passion on both sides.

Okay, this is my last post about WW84. I don’t want to get yelled at by the mods. Let’s talk about this movie, shall we?

Plenty of people enjoy every movie ever made.

But I don't see how anybody who does not have  huge fanboy blinders on could deny that WW84 dissaponted a lot of people,...with Warners Stockholders among the most dissapointed.

Sadly,we are seeing of pure tribalism in this thread. it's all about hating the other guy.

too many "fans" have such thin skins. They cannot stand to to see whatever the hell is it they are fans of being criticised. They have a lot of growing up to do.

I don’t think Warner stockholders were disappointed. WW84 was a smash for HBOMAX. It helped put it on the streaming map.

I think the blinders cuts both ways. People who hated something like to think everyone should hate it too.

In any event, I think if we continue on this track, the mods will scold us. Ultimately, we have a movie here that appears to be  a creative and new vibe for the MCU. Maybe it’s going to take critics and audiences time to warm to it. Some people love the the same formula and if there is any departure from that, it kind of shakes them up.

Deadline's demo and rating numbers from last night for Eternals - women still aren't showing up, even for supers movies that are supposed to appeal to them...64/35 male (yes, this isn't 100%...yes, this is Deadline:)...although those reviews from the movie goers - ouch!  We looking at $80 OW/$170M total with those kinda reviews?

"Already, Eternals in last night’s PostTrak earned a low 75% positive and 3 1/2 stars from general audiences, and a 57% recommend. Kids under 12 rated the film better with four stars and 90% positive, and a 65% definite recommend. Audience turnout was 42% men over 25, 22% men under 25, 21% females over 25, and 14% females under 25. We’ll update you as these Comscore/Screen Engine exits change throughout the weekend."

Wow! Pretty interesting how bad this is. Still excited to see it though.. Some who’ve seen it here say it’s a top tier MCU release, while others put it in the middle. I haven’t seen one person on BOT say it was lower tier yet. So this is surprising.

I would say WW84 44% unverified score is a much more accurate representation then its 73% verified for example.

And just because its verified doesnt mean anything about a person not having an agenda so that's an odd comment.

Why would you say that? Because you didn’t like it? I don’t know why folks have to continue to bring up WW84. As far as critics, I think both movies will probably have people believe they didn’t deserve their rottens. Looks like fans may like Eternals more than WW84 (MCU’s huge fan base helps with that) and critics hated Eternals more than they did WW84. All subjective and that’s why we should all judge for ourselves.

WW84 just to name one. Certain people were constantly posting the RT score as it dropped.

I’m sorry but some of the people in thread have been so overly sensitive about this stuff.

Yaaasss! RT has some blog critics who probably couldn’t get people they know to pay them any mind.

WW84 had way more viciousness on this site than Eternals. I don’t see anyone gleeful and actively rooting for the movie’s score to keep falling.

Anyway, I love that stare down video with Angelina Jolie v the cast. She’s great! I hope people don’t pay too much attention to the critics and give the movie a chance. I know, I will. It sounds like Marvel is trying something different and I’m intrigued.

RT is dropping fast . 54 now . This could end up in the 40s if the bleeding doesn't stop.

Once that boulder starts rolling downhill there’s sometimes a herd effect. It is going to need a group critics to start rolling it uphill.

Anyway, hope folks will just go see the movie with tempered expectations. I really like Jolie, Hayek and Madden, so I will see it and judge for myself.

Could be why Wonder Woman 1984 is 71% with top critics. Blogs and vlogs bringing the general score down.

WW84 is being brought up a lot in this thread lol, but I can’t see much in common. WW84 started very high and fell rapidly, Eternals has just started low and continued to slowly fall.

Yeah, WW84 is in the rare situation where the top critic score is higher than the overall score.

if people want to see a movie, they will see it. Most people have never heard of RT. Even if Eternals is the first rotten movie in the MCU, it may not matter. The MCU has built up such good will that it will still make its money. In terms of critics, the MCU gets the benefit of the doubt. That’s why it surprises me that Eternals is only barely fresh. For instance, I liked Captain Marvel but don’t see it as superior to WW84, but alas…

It’s still early, so maybe the RT score will go up. Too soon to make any conclusions.

  14. I am so happy for V2! My ex who is also my son’s idiotic father took him to see the first one. I was sort of pissed off because I thought the content would be too much for a child to handle. I mean, who thinks it’s appropriate for a child to watch an alien eating heads? But he loved it. It was all he could talk about for a week and he really wants to see a Venom v Spidey movie. He hasn’t seen this one yet, but is excited about it. Kudos to Sony, Tom Hardy and all involved.

  15. This is an excellent number for Shang Chi. Fabulous news for the movie industry and a relief to movie theater lovers.

Disney was spot on with their BW estimate and many thought it may be low balled too. According to Keyser in the tracking thread, barring walk ups making up the difference, the Sunday estimate may be right on the money as well.

Low balled or not, this movie is the triumph of the summer (caveat: BW was expected to do very well). For a little known super hero to explode on to the scene this way must be gratifying for everyone associated with it. That’s something to celebrate for sure.

  16. Personally, I think anything over 50 million for a new superhero who most people never heard of is great.

Many complain about the meltdowns, but part of the reason why they happen is because we have trackers who are also super fans. They want certain moves to succeed and others to fail.

There are also trackers/numbers people  who play it down the middle and their numbers are often close to the actual numbers. I mean people like Rth, Keyser, Porthos, Katniss and a few others. If people stopped setting expectations so unrealistically high, then the meltdowns would lessen.

I am in no rush to see it,  but the movie will do great this weekend. Happy to have an Avenger that especially Asian Americans can celebrate.
