Wow! I thought that with the Academy and producers presenting 5,000 versions of events, that he'd skate with a suspension for a year or so. Still, you can't just go on stage and pop someone at the Oscars because they told a tactless joke. This was the best move to get everyone to move on, but what a fall from grace Will has had in less than a week.

It’s amazing isn’t it.. how to turn winning an Oscar into a moment you want to forget!

Things have been bubbling under the surface for a long time.. his family with the exception of Willow are weird and then when you factor in the Scientology I’m actually surprised Smith took this long to show his Tom Cruise batshit crazy episode.

  2. I don’t see why anyone would take the joke badly.. Gi Jane is a good looking strong female character who happens to be bald.. what exactly is so offensive about being compared to her?

If you’ve embraced being bald like she claims shouldn’t this light joke empower you?

Despite all of that if people think there is supposed to be rules to jokes then they don’t understand comedy.. comedy is all about being able to make light of everything regardless of the subject.. there’s always going to be someone offended

I can count on the fingers of my hands the movies that have scored 95% in South Korea in the 800+ pages of this thread. And many that have scored exactly the same as Morbius have not been a total flop. At this point it seems like everyone wants the movie to flop and to see it not happen is a huge COPE.

i still remember the sweet sweet taste of everyone’s copiom when Venom blew there bloody doors off. Will be happy to see Morbius carry on that tradition

I find it odd that it took the Academy three days to say they asked Will to leave but he refused. It would be a crazy thing to lie about, and also seems like that should have been revealed on Monday at the latest? It would have made AMPAS look better and Will worse: they could say they didn't want to make a scene with security dragging him from the premises or whatever.

What you got was the Academy’s Twitter account posting Will's win like nothing had happened, then blandly condemning violence without naming names later that night. Will Packer did a flip tweet about the show not being boring. All the reports from the scene made it sound they were scrambling vs decisive, which seems about right for them.

The academy is just trying to make us forget they stood by and condoned violence.. even applauding it.

What kind of statement is that anyway.. “we asked the bad guy to leave and he said no so we did our jobs”

Imagine if law enforcement gave that excuse to their superiors.. they would be sacked on the spot.

Will Smith acted like an asshole last night and certainly earned a lot of criticism.
I do take his apology at face value though. I parse celeb apologies pretty hard. This one left out the sly if-you-were-offended shit. His acknowledgement of what set him off managed to explain without trying to excuse.

For something as serious as this that millions of people saw around the world live a throw away Instagram post co-produced by his pr team and not even done in video is totally the wrong way to do it.

Especially when he had the chance to do it properly on stage during his dumb speech about “doing it for love” and then going out and dancing like an idiot to his own songs like nothing happened.
