  1. you're talking about Aliens and Terminator 2? they are not world wide phenomenon -- Titanic and Avatar. you don't make a jump from phenomena.
  2. he's in another galaxy with Titanic and Avatar, not his other works. I'd say that if he's related to another Titanic-Avatar level phenomena, it needs to be an original film, not sequels. or a sequel to a modest original, which isn't exactly possible for today's Cameron.
  3. Avatar sequels won't do as good as Avatar did BO wise, US dom or WW; not because of any sort of backlash (let alone massive), but because Avatar is a world wide phenomena, but sequels will only be big movies. this is not a normal original-sequel situation.
  4. we'll never know; he's no longer with us~
  5. nitpicking and plothole sighting are fun games -- a film won't become bad becuase of them (the excpetions probably are those solely rely on plot twist).TDKR's only flaw, for me, is that almost every shot seems to be rushed (every take is too short, just for dialogue delivering) I think it's because that Nolan constructs too complex a narrative; even with 165min runtime, he needs to cut every take as short as possible.oh, and the melee action scenes are rather bland, but that's ok since the narrative is very good; that pearl-catwoman plotline (which starts from BB) alone makes those lukewarm action stuff more than bearable .all the plothole or "realism" related nitpickings, I don't care since those are grounded in naive realism or the need for "suspension of disbelief". I like what Jurij Lotman said: "[o]nly in art can we both be horrified by the evil of an event and appreciate the mastery of the actor." cinema is art or more so.
  6. I think that article is a reaction to Internet dis of TDKR, and obvious by a nolanite. I wonder maybe some of the criticism of TDKR isn't really about the film itself, but a reaction to nolanties.
  7. there are as many history books as the various views on cinema. Nolan's works are deeper than most hollywood prodcutions, but he isn't in the same league with the like of John Cassavetes, Scorsese, Coppola, Coen brothers, Hal Hartley, Haneke, and etc... TDKR is actually my favorite superhero movie, but it is nowhere near as being a masterpiece.
  8. I consider TDKR overall a better film than TA, but the action sequences in TDKR are mostly mediocre at best; the two invloved Batman and Bane are flirting with embrassment. In comparison, the action sequences in TA are sufficient throughout and sometimes good (few moments in the end battle section).
  9. CGI is simply norm now; some lazier and some more elaborate, but they'll all just CGI. Avatar's world is impressive indeed but I'm not really in awe.nothing, to me personally, nothing can compare to that first full dinosaur scene in Jurassic Park.
  10. I'm not sure about the SARS effect; did it affect all movies in 2002 and 2003? then I don't see Infernal Affairs got affected much in 2002. I recall the SARS effect was mostly in 2003, and it's not the whole year. anyway, as for the finale gross of TH...we'll see:)
  11. ok, find the 2003 record. RotK did have a big jump. but I'm not sure about it's the RotK being big or the whole series being big. in any event, if you do think LotR is big in HK, and consider TH1 as one...then, well, it's doing so-so business. as for the "if RotK were released today"...that's a moot point to argue since it can never be proved or disproved..
  12. LoP is huge in Taiwan mainly because of Ang Lee (our national hero); the film has a chance to beat TDKR in Taiwan.LotR films were very popular in Taiwan; RotK grossed NT$ 400m (unadjusted). judging from TH1's ok opening, worse than BD2 and Skyfall, TH1 probably won't even get to half of RotK's final gross. If you do count TH1 as LotR films, then it really does poorly.LotR movies were never really big in HK, and so TH1's average BO run is somewhat expected.in mainland China though, it's difficult to really tell whether the reception of LotR will affect TH1. LotR trilogy was before China cinema market fully "exploded." the top 30 highest grossing films there are all released after 2008, with Titanic as the only exception. RotK grossed just a bit higher than Day After Tomorrow back in 2004~ so maybe, TH1 has a chance to be big now; China currently is a market where Expendable 2 is only behind TDKR slightly...so who knows?
  13. indeed.I find this OW number very satisfaying...because of all those 100-150m ow predictions thrown around by ringers, and the way ringers have been treated anyone who disagree with them.
