  1. Taipei, TH second weekend NT$ 8.4m 2nd place. LoP returned to #1 with NT$10m.TH1 will finish grossing less than BD2 in Taiwan.
  2. Prequel is rare, PT is two and only.some of the prequels listed in mojo, they really are not in the sense of Hobbit and SW. Batman Begins, ST09, RotPoA, Casino Royale, they are more like reboots. X-Men Origins, Puss in Boots are more like spin-off.Temple of Doom? I think most people would consider it as sequel even though the event took place before lost Ark.anyway, just saying, it's more complicated than...
  3. that it may be, but I still think it's more complicated than that. With TH's performance, we may think that LotR fans haven't come out for the movie in full force, but will be for the more exciting second film...but it might also be the case that LotR trilogy didn't really create an as enormous fanbase as many here thought. that is, LotR trilogy was an event trilogy, and many people just went to participate the event but didn't go on to become fans.so, TH2 might get more LotR fans to come out, but also need to build its own popularity from scratch.Like I said, SW PT is the only movie franchise we can actually compare TH to, but still somewhat vastly different.
  4. except for returning characters, the two TH trailers I saw: the first one ends with the ring on the ground; in the end of the second one, the ring is animated into the "O" of the movie title "The Hobbit."that's not not hiding the connection, it's using the LotR to sell the movie.
  5. True Lies is R rated Action Comedy at its best.I always want to see the french original, but cannot find it~also back then had a good time imagining a sequel: spy family -- Boris-Doris duo + their daughter
  6. I think it's too early to be "certain" of this. the second might dip a bit and the third comes back up. SW PT is the only franchise we can compare to, but they're quite different since TPM was a looooong await prequel~TH isn't the case.
  7. they cannot ban people for actions outside of this forum...right?
  8. you kinda have to on here. if not for LotR trilogy, people won't see as a shock the possibility of Skyfall beating TH.
  9. quotable dialogues would help the popularity of a film, but don't make a script better or worst.for me, dialogue isn't a necessary criterion for a good script; scripts are meant only for instruction for filmmaking; filmmaking isn't simply to represent or realize a script.as for the Avatar's narrative being derivative. All movies today are derivative and no artist of any medium can avoid inter-textuality of some degree.Actually, I find Avatar more relevant to the human condition of this digital age than most blockbusters these days. A guy, restricted in physical movement, is fighting glorifying battles in another world with his glorified avatar. it's the life of many of us today, sitting in front of your desktops, lapping your notebooks, or molesting your touch screens; we are the intersection of the world with our bodies and the world without our physicality. It's not random decisions from Cameron to make Jake Sully a cripple and pick "avatar" as the film title.
  10. on any box office related website, Avatar will not be forgotten at least until its WW or US DOM record is broken. as of right now, the more a website is related to box office affair, the more unforgettable Avatar is.
  11. judging from the trailers and all the "the making of JR" PR programs, Jack Reacher seems to be nothing but a standard, uninspired action flick. I think Tom Cruise is the only reason for its 18-20m opening; it's a standard Cruise opening and I see around Valkyrie US DOM finish. Cruise is still a draw, and more reliable than most A-list stars (if there's any actually these days). I reckon very few stars, all by themselves can take a low budget, generic action movie to this at least decent opening.
  12. if not for the fact that Alien was burned into my memory, I may find Prom somewhat decent...but that's not the case: too overwhelmingly being there and done that.however, it's interesting to see where Ridley Scott takes the character of Elizabeth Shaw. He indeed introduced Ripley in Alien, but I think it's Cameron who made Ripley one of the most memorable heroines in cinema history. as for the boxoffice...it's really difficult to say~ will an additional fan base (to Alien series and to a lesser degree Ridley) actually be formed prior to the second film? will it be an all-out prequel to Alien? the Aline connection may help or hurt its theatrical run. not sure about lots of things now~
  13. too early to anticipate JL. If Wonder Woman is included and JL is the first movie that she shows up, then the character is destined to be royally fucked.MoS gets my vote. some of the shots in the trailer remind me of Superman: Birthright series and it's good.I actually kinda like SR and MoS certainly seems to be an immense improvement.ASM2 comes in 2nd. anticipation might become more or less after more detail about how they handle Gwen Stacy is revealed.
  14. it's not flopping. it's average and standard for high profile Hollywood flick. you can say underwhelming since the expectation was certainly for the film to do better.
  15. Avatar's WW is bigger than Avengers and TDKR WW combined...that's what "phenomena" means.Maybe Cameron will do it again, but I don't think it'll be with a sequel.
  16. with the requirement, I won't be able to do a top 25 list, just make some suggestions (films not mentioned in this thread)Ghost in the ShellPaprikaAkiraYellow SubmarineJin-RohUrusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful DreamerPerfect BlueUS theatrical release for Japanese animation features (clearly incomplete):http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_anime_theatrically_released_in_the_United_States
  17. you should try TTSCC. don't look at it as a purist; it has decent character depictions and great exploration into the huaman-machine interrelationship theme.oh, btw, I kinda like T3~ the final moment of the film is quite moving.
  18. agree. both Loki and Bane are utility villains, pawns for bigger scheme. In comparison though, Loki is far less significant in the grand scheme, pretty much like scarecrow in BB. Bane is the front of Talia, the most important part of Talia's plan. and yeah, Firefly is the one of those shows should contiune~ (Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles too!~)
  19. if TH's run ends up somehow preventing more ringer activity around here, non rigners or lurkers who have been put off by ringer's attitude may join in. you lose some and get some.
  20. agree, but the difference between these two and other yearly event movies is quite evident, at least for me,
  21. lol, maybe I'm a "hater" too, despite the fact that I've watched Aliens 2 and T2 countless times, owning every version of vhs, dvd and blu-ray release. Avatar imax 3d twice, blu-ray 3d gaining mileage...
  22. I was there, and that's my point. It's a yearly event, and was overshadowed by subsequent yearly event movies. titanic and Avatar is in another Galaxy.

  24. outsanding perormance isn't worldwide phenomena. Titanic has been (and Avatar joined recently) on the top of the BO charts of most regions in the world for YEARS (and years to come), that's what I meant by "world wide pheonomenon." Terminator 2 hasn't even been there. T2 is a successful blockbuster, that's it.
  25. Terminator 2 is a successful blockbuster, but not a phenomenal event at the level of Titanic and Avatar.
