  1. Get ready for the biggest non-holiday OD/OW of all time. Let's compare the ticket prices of Transformers 4 with Avengers 2. vs. Cyberport: = Palace IFC: -$15 Hollywood: = The ONE: -$5 Cinematheque: = Mongkok: -$5 Palace APM: +$5 Kwai Fong: = Tsuen Wan: = Kingswood Ginza: +$15 Prices at Broadway vary but at most locations, they only vary by $5, which is really saying something since Transformers 4 was 24 minutes longer than Avengers 2. If Avengers 2 had the same runtime as Transformers 4, we would have seen at least a $10 increase. Festival Walk New Avengers: Age of Ultron 3D - 31 showings What a monster. It will occupy 5 screens before 3 PM and all screens after 3 PM. The ONE New Avengers: Age of Ultron 3D - 27 showings At The ONE, Avengers 2 runs away with 90% of the showtimes on Thursday (27 in total). Fast & Furious 7 gets 2 while Wild Tales receives 1. Pre-sales for The Avengers 2 are fantastic. It will beat Avengers pre-sales start of 47,000 and might even defeat Harry Potter's OD pre-sales record of 62,089. It is looking at a 1m OD and a 5m+ OW.
  2. I see a 15m total from a 5.1m OW. It will have competition from Helios (local movie) on its 2nd weekend but Avengers 2's 2nd weekend hold will be offset from the holiday falling on the weekend. Other than that, it should be smooth sailing until at least Tomorrowland or if that does not click with viewers then San Andreas or Jurassic World from June. The last 2 Marvel movies released the last week of April got nearly a 3 multiplier. I think Avengers 2 will follow a similar pattern. Higher opening weekend, about the same legs (given the generally good reception from Avengers).
  3. Fast & Furious 7 has already racked up 1.263m in 2 days. By Saturday, it will have already passed Fast Five. By late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, it will overtake Fast & Furious 6 as the biggest in the franchise. 4-day weekend should be just over 2.55m. 5-day should be in the 3.15m area. 6-day should be around 3.65-3.7m. Little Big Master continues to surprise. 5m is looking likely. I wish theater operators were a bit nicer to Kingsman: The Secret Service. If it didn't experience the CNY massacre in week 2, it could have easily passed 5m, beating Skyfall's total. Theaters need to stop giving shitty showtimes to Kingsman already. It is in week 8 and still selling out shows despite the small screens and terrible times. What more does it need to prove that it should stay in theaters? I guess the problem for Kingsman is that it does not have the best pre-sales but it more than makes up for that with beastly walk-ins. ___________________________________________________________ Avengers 2 is looking monstrous with only 2 days of pre-selling. 75% full in IMAX. 80% full in some theaters already on opening day in 3D. The reason why I bolded the 3D part is that people are actively wanting to watch this in 3D versus the lack of 3D pre-sales for Fast & Furious 7. This monster is looking very good for 4.5m OW and with the huge ticket prices, 5m OW is possible.

The only exception to this rule on Friday was From Vegas to Macau II which increased due to the lack of showtimes on Thursday which meant theaters had to give it more showtimes/bigger screens on Friday to compensate for the high demand. Triumph in the Skies eked out an admissions victory and an admissions increase from Thursday but in gross it fell -2.6%. 12 Golden Ducks fared slightly worse than the other 2 big Chinese language films. Kingsman pulled off a solid hold despite it going down in admissions and in gross. It has been holding very strongly despite mild pre-sales. The tepid pre-sales is what sprung theaters to move it to smaller screens beginning on Friday, however, it has crawled back up with walk-ins. Fifty Shades of Grey gets a dishonorable mention for declining 30% in gross from Thursday. Its performance has truly been shocking for all the wrong reasons. Saturday adm. It will pass 3m either on Sunday or Monday and 4m will happen by next weekend! It will gross more than 5x last year's Doraemon offering. Truly an outstanding performance. Besides its astonishing performance, it will be the first time in 7 years that a kids movie has won the CNY weekend. The last time a kids movie won the CNY weekend was with CJ7 back in 2008. If you are only counting pure animation movies, the last pure animation release to win CNY was The Incredibles in 2005. Pretty good for Triumph in the Skies. Its really strong Thursday is what pulled it up to #2 this week despite having to deal with last year's CNY movies getting sequels this year and a breakthrough performance for Doraemon. It constantly sold out on Thursday which pushed many theaters to give it more screens on the weekend which allowed it to stem the tide of From Vegas to Macau 2's push. Many people including myself were not expecting From Vegas to Macau 2 to do as much damage as it did yet it rose every day up till Saturday in admissions and it might have possibly managed a 2nd place finish in gross on Saturday. A ton of theaters put this movie in the smallest screen but as it kept on selling out, theaters had to give up the bigger screen for 12 Golden Ducks and move it to From Vegas to Macau II. It even stole a couple of Triumph in the Skies' screens from Thursday on the weekend which shows how well it has been doing in theaters. It will not beat last year's predecessor on opening weekend (in either just the 4 day opening weekend or altogether including sneaks) but it will likely beat its total gross. The only disappointment of the weekend is 12 Golden Ducks. Last year, it won the CNY battle with 1.76m but this year, it will start its run with nearly $500,000 less than last year. Still, it did pull in over 1m which does not make it a big loser but everyone largely expected this to win over all the Chinese language releases this week. Even though an animation release won with a breakout performance this week, Penguins of Madagascar has to commended for not only hanging in there with the big films this week but managing to defeat Kingsman on the weekend. It could have easily been swallowed by Doraemon and the other animation releases but it fought back after weak previews last weekend. Word of mouth is very good for this cartoon. The top 4 from this year and last year are nearly interchangeable but where it really diverges is the supporting cast. With only Kingsman and Penguins of Madagascar alone, those 2 combine for over 1.8m vs. less than 500k for the Jack Ryan and Saving Mr. Banks duo from last year.

In a very fierce CNY battle, Doraemon lost to Triumph in the Skies in admissions but won in gross. Altogether, it will double the 2nd highest Doraemon movie on Friday and will at least triple the 2nd highest before it leaves theaters. This is a fantastic result! Great start for Triumph in the Skies. This is playing very well with young people. Letdown for 12 Golden Ducks. It barely won Thursday over From Vegas to Macau 2. Including sneaks, this might pass its predcessor's opening weekend from last year. Good for From Vegas to Macau 2. This will definitely beat last year's offering. Good hold for Kingsman. It will pass 2m on Saturday and will at least pass 3m. 4m is possible if new openers in the coming weeks do poorly. Penguins of Madagascar rebounded from last week's small previews. This now has a shot at 2m. An Inspector Calls did pretty poorly. Fifty Shades of Grey combusted. In just 1 week, it has gone from 2nd to 8th, fallen over 50% on a holiday and lost more than 10 theaters during a holiday weekend. This might be the worst hold I've ever witnessed on a 2nd week holiday weekend ever! Very good for The Imitation Game. Shaun the Sheep was hammered from the other animated releases. Bad total so far. The top 9 combined for more than 2.1m US. We will hit a new weekend record this weekend with a chance at 8m provided Sunday holds up well. This weekend will hit at least 7.5m total.

It had the highest walk-ins but was it on its merit or because of other films selling out? From Vegas to Macau 2 had really weak walk-ins because most of its showings on Thursday were sold out or near sellouts. Very good for Kingsman. Despite its continued problems with pre-selling, it claimed 2nd in walk-ins today. That is an excellent comeback for Penguins of Madagascar. Word of mouth is very strong. Could it take away business from Doraemon this weekend? Fifty Shades had a horrible drop. Whenever you drop on CNY, that is bad. To drop 50% on CNY is horrifying. An Inspector Calls did pretty bad. At the biggest theater chain Broadway/AMC, Triumph in the Skies is getting downsized despite hot pre-selling. On the flip side, From Vegas to Macau II and Penguins of Madagascar are getting upgraded into bigger screens or more showtimes. 12 Golden Ducks will stay the same but gets full day showtimes due to the film being distributed by EDKO which is owned by Broadway/AMC. Doraemon/Kingsman/Fifty Shades all get downgraded. For some locations, Fifty Shades will leave theaters today. UA is pretty much the opposite of Broadway/AMC. Triumph in the Skies and Doraemon will be promoted while 12 Golden Ducks/From Vegas to Macau II/Penguins of Madagascar all lose showtimes/bigger screens. Kingsman/Fifty Shades will also be demoted here. Interestingly, Kingsman will lose showtimes in IMAX to Triumph in the Skies. This is a huge coup for TITS because normally the 4 IMAX screens are not given to a standard non-IMAX release unless if there is no IMAX-made release out or if the IMAX release is doing poorly. Kingsman was doing alright in IMAX last weekend but the hot pre-selling for TITS made the theater operators change their mind. MCL sees Triumph in the Skies along with From Vegas to Macau II upgraded while the two animated films stay the same. 12 Golden Ducks as well as the two usual suspects Kingsman and Fifty Shades will get cut in some shape or form. At Golden Harvest, From Vegas to Macau II is being distributed by Panasia which is owned by the Golden Harvest theater chain. It will see more showtimes this weekend. Also in GH's good graces is Penguins of Madagascar and Triumph in the Skies. The other 2 big openers will stay the same while the two holdovers from last week will see its showtimes slashed. Lots of scheduling politics this weekend. Where else can you see a hot pre-seller like Triumph in the Skies see its showtimes cut at Broadway/AMC while Broadway/AMC's own 12 Golden Ducks gets only half day showtimes at Golden Harvest?

Though it did not have the buzz that Fifty Shades had, it grew thanks to stellar word of mouth which led to numerous sellouts on Saturday. Word of mouth continues to build for Kingsman as it is still sporting a 4.7/5 rating from 200 user reviews. Fifty Shades of Grey had the attention but failed to perform beyond its target fanbase. It rushed out to swell pre-selling on Thursday but walk-ins contributed only half of its admissions total on opening day. Valentine's Day saw it perk up but Sunday saw it crash and burn with it declining 40% from Saturday. Stand By Me Doraemon did great with previews. Although one wonders if the full scale early launch will dilute its CNY sales, this is a huge number for the franchise. By next Thursday, it will become the #1 Doraemon movie of all time in HK. Penguins of Madagascar had an early launch as well and it did average. It will likely get to 1m total but not much further than that. Not a great total for Jupiter Ascending. It will leave theaters with around $900,000. The Imitation Game is still in sneak previews mode. Altogether it has racked up nearly $100,000 in the past 2 months. Very strong showings overall for those theaters showing previews since January.

This is one case where previews really helped. Fifty Shades of Grey had all the buzz before but Tuesday night sneaks brought a lot more awareness for this film. Fifty Shades of Grey had huge interest and big pre-sales but it fell short starting with the admissions loss on Thursday all the way to the massive 12,000+ admissions gap on Sunday. Overall, this still did quite well. Doraemon had a disastrous Sunday meaning that it ends up behind Fifty Shades for this weekend. This has already jumped to #2 out of all the Doraemon films here with just its sneak peeks and it will pass last year's #1 offering by Thursday. 12 Golden Ducks had a ghastly Sunday fall but it was still enough to beat out all the others for #5. This upcoming week is Chinese New Year. This year Chinese New Year starts on Thursday which means 4 days of holidays! That likely means setting a new weekend record. Wednesday nights will be very active as well with theaters pushing midnight and late showings (2-4 AM). Theaters that have already rolled out their Thursday schedules have seen amazing pre-selling (thanks to Triumph in the Skies). At all of those theaters so far, here's how the pre-selling stacks up 1. Truly remarkable. TITS and 12 GD along with Doraemon will fight for #1 this weekend. 12 Golden Ducks is doing solid but not spectacular pre-sales. The mid-afternoon and the late evening showings are doing great. Somewhat of a surprise, From Vegas to Macau II runs past Doraemon into the top 3. All of its showings (including 12 PM) are doing great so it will see an upgrade in showtimes or in screen count as this weekend progresses. On the flipside, Doraemon is having sluggish pre-sales. It is even behind KingsSpeech(man) for 4th. With Kingsman, pre-sales are not its strong suit but Doraemon has had really good pre-sales so far. I wonder if demand is being met. Outside the top 5, Penguins of Madagascar also does not seem to have really strong pre-sales. For a film that has had strong pre-sales, Fifty Shades Thursday pre-sales are a major failure. Not featured here but still on Thursday's schedule is Shaun the sheep. It is performing worse than Fifty Shades at The ONE. Though that is 1 theater, it seems this is how screen counts will play out on Friday into the weekend Increasing Triumph in the Skies From Vegas to Macau II Flat or Decreasing 12 Golden Ducks Doraemon Kingsman Penguins of Madagascar Decreasing Fifty Shades of Grey ________________________________________________________ I wanted to see how well Triumph in the Skies is doing at other locations so I picked the theater that is not known for hot pre-sales. It will make 2m by the end of Chinese New Year. Huge admissions for Kingsman. Every Broadway/AMC theater recorded at least 1 sellout for Kingsman today (that includes The ONE/Kingswood Ginza -- both notoriously difficult to sell out) 4m is likely in play with that weekend number. Triumph in the Skies did an excellent job. It got half day showings at quite a few locations. It should be able to beat out Doraemon for #1 in admissions next weekend. Valentine's Day helped Fifty Shades a bit but the gap is growing larger between it and Kingsman with each day that passes. 12 Golden Ducks did great. Solid for From Vegas to Macau II. Penguins of Madagascar did run of the mill cartoon numbers. It'll be contending with Doraemon and Shaun the Sheep for screens next week so it'll already start with a disadvantage. It'll probably be able to push past 1m but it won't go much further than that. Strong sneaks once again for The Imitation Game. Sunday adm. Speaking of Fifty Shades, it has done quite well this weekend. It might not be the star of the show but it put in a great weekend as well. It will beat Fifty Shades this weekend. The question is whether or not Kingsman will be able to defeat Doraemon or even Triumph in the Skies. Kingsman is having exceptional word of mouth right now. It is at a stellar 4.8/5, the highest I've ever soon for a Hollywood movie. It is still early days though so it will come down once the weekend crowd catches it. Meanwhile, Fifty Shades is behind with a score of 4.4/5. That's not a bad number for now but it went down from 4.6 earlier so this is unlikely to grab people outside of its target audience. As far as its performance is concerned, Fifty Shades of Grey fooled theater chain operators into thinking it was going to be a big player with its hot night time pre-selling action but after all the ruckus died down, walk-ins were more interested in seeing Kingsman. Theaters lavished the female friendly picture with 2-3 screens on Thursday but it was to no avail. Some theaters downgraded Kingsman on Friday due to very weak pre-selling on Tuesday but all theaters have adjusted and Kingsman will be put on a bigger screen or more screens on Sunday. That is not very good for Fifty Shades. It looks like people in more rural areas are ignoring this film. Contrast that with Kingsman where pre-selling is not its strong suit. Very good number for it. I am particularly impressed by the 10 PM showing (actually 10:30 PM) because this is a slightly longer film and 10 PM usually gets lower pre-selling right out of the gate. Moving onto the Chinese New Year fare. Doraemon is out in front with all day showings but the biggest surprise of this weekend is Triumph in the Skies. The movie is based off the popular local tv series but I did not expect this movie to do such huge business. This could seriously challenge Doraemon for #1 next weekend. Over 60% sold in the prime slots (even at 1 PM!) with 1 day of pre-selling to go. Wow. 12 Golden Ducks/From Vegas to Macau II won't do as much business now than next week so they get a pass but it looks like both will have to settle for a top 5 position. Penguins of Madagascar will probably be overshadowed by Doraemon. I think it could still get to 1-1.5m total but it'll have to fight for screens with the others every day. If I have time tomorrow, I will look at pre-sales from another theater. Next weekend is looking like this 1. Doraemon/Triumph in the Skies 3. 12 Golden Ducks 4. From Vegas to Macau II 5. Kingsman/Penguins of Madagascar 7. Fifty Shades of Grey What an exciting two weeks of box office!

  16. Not sure but I think it did on par with the 1st one's OW. Thank you! Interesting week upcoming. Fifty Shades of Grey and Kingsman: The Secret Service will be fighting tooth and nail for glory this week but a ton of movies releasing on Chinese New Year will get early sneaks starting on Saturday. Most notably, Stand By Me Doraemon will be getting the big push on Saturday knocking out Fifty Shades of Grey from the biggest theater. Other CNY films like 12 Golden Ducks, From Vegas to Macau II, Penguins of Madagascar and Triumph in the Skies will also be seeing some action this weekend. The Imitation Game will continue to get sneak peeks this weekend. III) - 1 showing (▼ 2) Fifty Shades of Grey will command the most showtimes this week but Kingsman: The Secret Service is right behind. At all theater chains, Fifty Shades of Grey will have a bigger advantage either in showtimes or screens over Kingsman. Most theaters are split as to who gets the biggest screen. At some theaters, Kingsman will have the biggest screen or the largest screen plus a really small screen but Fifty Shades of Grey will occupy the 2nd biggest and the 3rd biggest and those two combined lifts it over Kingsman in terms of seat count. At other theaters, Fifty Shades grabs the biggest theater. Saturday is shaping up to be very interesting. Chinese New Year films are getting major sneak peeks this weekend. Stand By Me Doraemon is the standout and will get all day sneaks in the biggest theater at many locations. The Golden Ducks will be the next biggest screen getter out of the CNY films. Some theaters have given this full day while others are only giving it half day sneaks. In response to the huge screen counts set aside for Doraemon and the rest of the CNY films this weekend, Fifty Shades and Kingsman have been downgraded to a smaller screen. In about half of Broadway/AMC theaters so far, Kingsman will get the bigger screen over Fifty Shades this weekend. The other half will retain Fifty Shades in the bigger screen over Kingsman. The holdovers will experience a huge decline in showtimes on Saturday to make room for the CNY films. At Tsuen Wan, all holdovers except for Jupiter Ascending will be gone by Friday. Ticket Sales Huge ticket sales from early pre-selling in the more foreigner areas (Central, Admiralty, TST, HK Island) are pushing Fifty Shades well ahead of Kingsman in those locations but Fifty Shades is behind Kingsman in more rural areas.
  17. Where are you getting these numbers from? I don't see it on the usual sites. The drops for all Christmas movies are heavily inflated since last Friday was a holiday. Seventh Son and Women Who Flirt did surprisingly OK. Not that great for Love, Rosie.
  18. Taken 3 is off to a fantastic start in HK. It is currently close to Taken 2's OW number (- sneaks) in only 3 days including sneaks. Propelling it to new heights is the excellent WOM it has received so far. Currently, it stands at 4.5/5 rating, above Interstellar, Night at the Museum 3 and The Hobbit 3. I believe 2.5m total is very much in the works with 3m a possibility.
  19. Night at the Museum 3 has quickly moved up the year end rankings and will soon join the ranks of the 5m grossers by the end of next week. Meanwhile, Big Hero 6 and Paddington continue to battle it out over on the family friendly audience side. Paddington won some theaters in admissions last weekend but Big Hero 6's 3D ticket prices have put it well ahead in gross. The Hobbit 3 has now gone down to 4th in admissions after Paddington passed it today. It looks like it will miss 4m. Wednesday adm. Not bad for Big Hero 6. Excellent start for Taken 3. It is up +131.9% from Taken 2's first opening previews day in pre-sales. That opened on the holiday weekend of Mid Autumn Festival but the good news for Taken 3 is that it was limited to only night previews whereas some theaters gave Taken 2 full day showtimes. Not good for The Hobbit. Great admissions figure for Paddington. Theaters had to keep on increasing its screens/showtimes last week after it beat out Hobbit's admissions in many places and Big Hero 6's in a couple of theaters. Down the list Seventh Son and Women Who Flirt also got sneak previews today.
  20. Big Hero 6 is doing good. It will beat Wreck-It Ralph's total by this week. I wouldn't call Hobbit underperforming because the Night at the Museum franchise is HUGE in HK. Taken 3 gets an early start in HK, premiering with sneaks on New Year's Eve before it moves into full release on New Year's Day. It will face off against Seventh Son, Foosball and Pang Ho Cheung Mandarin rom-com Women Who Flirt. Serial (Bad) Weddings and My Man head into limited release.

  24. Yes. I wish they do that here. It really depends on the film. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 saw a $5 increase from the normal 3D blockbuster (Captain America 2, etc.) but Transformers 4 ticket pricing strategy is a huge anomaly.
