Nice for Neighbors. Good increase for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It passed Neighbors for #2 today in gross. Aberdeen and Transcendence continue its fierce battle for #4. There is not much separation between the two. Delete My Love is pushing back hard. On Thursday, it was more than 3x behind Aberdeen's admissions but on Saturday, it was less than 2.5x back. Not good for The Eternal Zero or The Other Woman. After its solid opening day, Black Coal, Thin Ice has come back down from its high. Sunday adm. Rave reviews and accelerated ticket sales ahead of X-Men's release next week contributed to the powerful opening weekend. Legs will very much be an issue. As much as the reviews help, there is no way it will stop X-Men from taking at least 3 screens. Neighbors had a great opening weekend. Seth Rogen and Zac Efron are certainly not box office draws (Rogen has had his last 2 feature films skipped by HK theaters entirely and Efron's last film to gross over $150k on OW was 17 Again 5 years ago) but credit the marketing for its success. It played as an alternative to the loud, crashing action of Godzilla and filled a genre that has not been in play for quite some time. 2nd place this weekend will come down to Sunday and how badly Neighbors declines and how light The Amazing Spider-Man 2 falls. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 really got rocked by Godzilla. This will be two straight weeks of falls over 65%...and next week, it looks like it will decline over 75%. Distrastous legs for the web crawler. Aberdeen and Transcendence have been locked in a battle for 4th all week. Aberdeen will be Pang Ho Cheung's lowest grossing film in 4 years but it will be his 4th straight 1m grossing film (5th if you consider SDU to be his work as well). Transcendence has been flopping in a lot of places around the world but in HK, its gross has been decent. Aberdeen has the upper hand for #4. Sunday should see Transcendence suffer a heavier drop than Aberdeen which would put Aberdeen over the top.
  2. New polls up. Thursday Actuals 1. Godzilla - $258,001 (opening day actual) 2. Neighbors - $64,500 (opening day actual) 3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $58,050 (Thursday actual)/$6,450,028 4. Aberdeen - $25,800 (Thursday actual)/$774,003 by today Transcendence - between $21,930 and $25,800 (Thursday actual)/$516,002 The Eternal Zero - $9,030 (opening day actual)/$19,350 Black Coal, Thin Ice - $7,740 (opening day actual) Delete My Love - $258,001 Heaven Is For Real - $283,801 The Other Woman - $993,304 Good for Godzilla. Neighbors did a nice job. Bad hold for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It will pass 6.5m tomorrow but 7m looks to be a stretch. It needs to have solid increases on Saturday and Sunday to have a shot. Aberdeen and Transcendence are locked in a battle for 4th this weekend. Overall, Aberdeen's total is not that great whereas Transcendence seems to have pulled out a decent gross. Of course, most of that gross can be attributed to Johnny Depp but this shows the starpower of Depp here and around Asia. Poor start for The Eternal Zero. Black Coal, Thin Ice did quite well thanks to the awards circuit boosting its profile. It will easily surpass a $15,000 PTA this weekend. Delete My Love got marginalized this weekend but it looks to be holding alright. Heaven Is For Real continues to rein in audiences and reviews are quite high for this movie. Forget critic reviews for The Other Woman because audience reviews have put this on par with Captain America 2 and Heaven Is For Real. It will pass 1m on Friday. Nice jump for Neighbors. Solid enough bump for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but holds continue to be a major issue. It will drop another 60% this weekend. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is getting 4 screens mostly. Some places it is getting 3 screens and in others, it is getting 5 screens. At Broadway/AMC, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been getting mostly 4 screens everywhere. In some theaters, like The One or Festival Walk, it has gotten 5 screens at varying points of the day. Apart from TASM 2, Aberdeen is launching with special screenings on Wednesday night and into Thursday. It is mostly playing with 3-4 showtimes at Broadway/AMC. This will take a slight chunk out of TASM 2's potential earnings tomorrow. Holdovers such as That Demon Within and The Other Woman remain for another week but for the others, they are getting the axe at different places. One movie that is not showing up on the admissions site, Heaven is for Real, is doing especially well at the theaters it is in and is being kept by all theaters it is showing at. Biggest losers this week are Captain America 2, Rio 2 and one-weeker Vampire Academy. TASM vs. TASM 2 Opening Day Showtimes Comparison Palace APM: 33 showtimes vs. 28 showtimes Festival Walk: 32 showtimes vs. 30 showtimes Tsuen Wan: 21 showtimes vs. 19 showtimes The Grand: 39 showtimes vs. 28 showtimes Apart from The Grand, everywhere is just slightly below TASM's showtime count on its opening day. Part of that is due to the longer running time of TASM 2 but I think it mostly comes from Aberdeen getting special screenings everywhere. I am surprised that it's getting so many showtimes everywhere on a big tentpole's opening day (even if it is a holiday). Normally, I do not include special screenings in showtime reports, however, this has had an impact on TASM 2's showtimes. Some good news for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 though...at Festival Walk, it has gotten a lot of morning showtimes. 9 showtimes in the morning. It also has gotten every house in the morning which is pretty incredible. Sadly, 2D has no morning showtimes so it does not tie the morning showtimes record set by The Avengers (with 10) here. At Broadway, most theaters are giving the biggest screen to The Midnight After, however, those in the business district or those that cater more toward foreigners have given it to Captain America 2. UA, meanwhile, have done a 180 and has given the biggest screen to Captain America 2 on Saturday. Langham Place have split the biggest screens between Captain America 2 and The Midnight After with both occupying their own big screen all day. The GRAND has been a huge superhero supporter in the past so it is no surprise that they have put Captain America 2 way out in front in showtimes this weekend.

Not good for Captain America 2, particularly since opening day was not frontloaded due to the Saturday holiday. Walk-ins will have to be brisk to pass The Midnight After today. Very good for Naked Ambition. The tepid reviews did not seem to hurt it. Yves Saint Laurent did OK. It is doing good at some locations but it has been weak in most. Noah tumbled again. Bad reviews really sunk this ship. Terrible for Enthralled. They should not have bothered to release it this week with two higher profile Cat. III releases. Great hold for Kano. Bad for The Chinese Puzzle. Twelve Nights is not doing well. It will leave Hong Kong soon. Divergent had a good hold but drops will be much hurder this weekend.

I knew that The Midnight After would command a lot of pre-sales but what I am surprised about is that Naked Ambition 3D is beating Captain America 2. Very surprising that Captain America 2 could only muster 8 tickets outside of the night shows. Meanwhile, that is really good for The Midnight After. It obliterates everything at night and is doing better in the afternoon than both openers from last week. Overflow from the 7 PM showtimes will start to seep through to the 5 PM showings soon. Midnights are superb but it is strange that the 12:30 AM showing is doing better than the midnight showing. I will check back later tonight to see how much Captain America 2 improves and if it passes Naked Ambition. Pre-sales have been quite telling. The Midnight After is beating Captain America 2 everywhere including the business district. Even Yves Saint Laurent is rounding up more admissions than the superhero at the more expensive theaters. The Midnight After is nearly up 5:1 over Captain America 2 at The GRAND at night (that includes 3D Atmos, 3D and 2D versions for CA2). It has been complete domination by The Midnight After so far. I give The Midnight After 65% chance of winning this weekend. Captain America 2 can still pull this out but it really needs to pick up (higher ticket prices will not sell themselves). Even if it does 3/4 business of The Midnight After, it can still win. Weekend for The Midnight After will be key. After the opening day frenzy, it will need to sustain its opening day prowess through the weekend. Most Cat. III movies do not jump that high on the weekend so we will see if it follows that trend or if it deviates from it. Right now, I see The Midnight After opening with 1.3m this weekend and Captain America 2 tallying 1.1m (-60%).

Onto this week where local film The Midnight After creeps into cineplexes. Theaters will have a tough time deciding on which film to give its biggest screen to. Most have opted for The Midnight After although it is expected that the business district will side with Captain America 2. It's unclear if theaters will give The Midnight After 3 screens at night given Captain America 2's explosion on opening weekend. If theaters do decide to give The Midnight After 3 screens, then most theaters will run with either of these scenarios: The Midnight After (biggest screen/4th biggest/5th biggest)/Captain America 2 (2nd biggest, 3rd biggest, 6th biggest) or Captain America 2 (biggest screen/3rd biggest/6th biggest)/The Midnight After (2nd biggest/4th biggest/5th biggest). Holdovers will get slaughtered although Naked Ambition will be granted a stay of execution since it's only going to be in its 2nd week of release.

I can't see this getting any less than 3 screens at most locations (especially at night). 5 days out with holiday weekend pre-selling to go and both 8 PM showtimes are 3/4 full. 25% of tickets have been sold for both days, which is very good. It'll make more than 1m next weekend.
  25. Thanks for the correction. Sometimes the admissions site can spit out absurdly low admissions for a couple of weeks but the site is usually very reliable. April 3 Thursday Actuals 1. Captain America: The Winder Soldier - $451,198 (+85.7% from Captain America OD, opening day actual) 2. Naked Ambition - $154,702 (opening day actual) 3. Noah - $825,077 Nymphomaniac Volume 1 - $7,735 (opening day actual) Kano - $177,907 Twelve Nights - $6,445 (opening day actual) Non-Stop - $1,830,641 Good opening day for Captain America 2. It looks like the admissions site is having some issues. It will target more than 2.5m this weekend. Naked Ambition opened well. In the face of tough competition, it is aiming for $750,000 in 4 days. Noah's 2nd Thursday fell about 70% from opening day. The holiday will probably be able to push it past 1m although it won't get much farther than that. Nymphomaniac did not do that well in gross. Expectations were a bit higher for this film since it deals with a controversial subject matter. Kano dealt the Captain America 2/Naked Ambition 2 duo well and fell less than 50%. Let's see if it can possibly get to $400,000 or maybe even $500,000. Documentary Twelve Nights was slow out of the gate with a variety of movies showing this week. Though it boasts Giddens, the director of You Are the Apple of My Eye, documentaries tend to perform poorly in Hong Kong and with Nymphomaniac seizing interest away, Twelve Nights could not hoard the alternative crowd for itself. Non-Stop is doing very well. 2m should be broken by next week. Captain America 2 OW Projections Thu: $451,000 Fri: $550,000 (+22%) Sat: $950,000 (+73%) Sun: $850,000 (-11%) Total: $2,801,000 (+130% from Captain America OW) Captain America 2 will soar on Saturday and come down a notch on Sunday. It will at least double Captain America's OW. Naked Ambition OW Projections Thu: $155,000 Fri: $175,000 (+13%) Sat: $220,000 (+26%) Sun: $200,000 (-9%) Total: $750,000 Naked Ambition is not looking too shabby either. Top 2 should combine for nearly/at least 3.5m.
