With its runtime clocking in at a bloated 165-166 minutes, it has garnered an incredible 4-5 screens at most locations. Considering that even with no trailers shown before the movie, theaters can only run 5 showtimes per day (6 if you include midnight) on 1 screen. Still, a few locations have put it on 6 screens at night. Pre-sales so far are looking very good too. Maleficent is the main big winner of the holdovers. This and Z Storm will split the lone 7 PM showtime depending on the theater. Aside from those 2, it is pretty much a deathblow for the rest. Edge of Tomorrow will get a showtime here and there along with X-Men. The biggest losers this week are last week's openers and Overheard 3. What will boost Transformers 4's opening day and OW gross are the insane ticket price hikes that have been set by Paramount/Intercontinental. Judging from these pre-sales, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Transformers 4 is looking at a non-holiday opening day record of $900,000. 1m might be a stretch but it is not impossible. After several weeks of bland movies and strong holdovers, viewers are definitely in the mood for something big and explosive. In the midst of Transformers 4 opening, How To Train Your Dragon 2 opened its HK campaign with special screenings last weekend. It will get more sneak previews this weekend but theaters will be reluctant to allocate screens in the morning and afternoon to it over Transformers 4. Last weekend, it placed in the top 5 on Saturday and Sunday and it should continue that into this weekend.

  3. Thanks. I'm hoping Transformers 4 will generate 1 page of comments. It is looking amazing at the moment. More on Transformers 4...as most of you know, Transformers 4 will have its world premiere in HK but that has not stopped Paramount and local theaters from taking no prisoners with its pricing strategy. Transformers 4 ticket prices at Broadway theater chain. Ticket prices are about $25 HKD ($3.25 US) more than The Avengers on average. That is a massive difference. Even most tentpole films are only separated by $5-$10 at the most. While some of the uptick in price can be attributed to the long running time, some of it is because Intercontinental (Paramount's HK distributor) feels that this will be the event film of the summer (and they are not wrong either). Theater Movie Ticket Prices (HKD) Ticket Prices (USD) Palace IFC The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $180 $23 Transformers: Age of Extinction $175 $22.50 The Avengers $135 $17.50 Maleficent (regular) $125 $16 Life of Pi $120 $15.50 At Palace IFC, the difference is even greater with $40 separating the 2 films...and there is no HFR in sight. If we take The Avengers admissions and apply it to Transformers 4, factoring in its $25-$30 headstart, then it would make over $6m for the 4-day weekend. 6m is impossible at the moment as Transformers 4 will not be equalling The Avengers' admissions but 5m is very possible. At the moment, Transformers 4 is doing very well in pre-sales. In IMAX, it is doing gangbusters. Peak showtimes are nearly a quarter filled less than a day old.

It'll be interesting to see if it defeats Maleficent with final admissions today. Maleficent will win in gross for sure though. Excellent hold for Maleficent. It will pass both Wanted and Mr & Mrs. Smith's totals this weekend to become Angelina Jolie's biggest live action hit in Hong Kong. Weak for Coming Home. X-Men held up just fine but is it an overcompensation for last week's steep drop? Edge of Tomorrow fell hard. Poor starts for Thermae Romae 2, Brick Mansions and Sabotage. Terrible hold for A Million Ways to Die in the West. It is getting grilled by users. Superb for Queen.

  6. In general, most of the smaller-medium sized Asian territories are one of the worst places for films to build legs, not just in HK. The main reason why this happens in HK is that whenever there is a major release, everyone wants to catch the latest blockbuster so it is no surprise to see drops of 80-90% for holdovers. Nobody cares about some fancy arthouse film here. They just want to see the major blockbusters and that's it. This is why distributors schedule around the mega blockbusters because if they do not, their film will perish. Also, depending on the genre of the film, they only schedule those types of films during certain months where they know it will make the most money. Complicating matters is the fact that unlike many countries, HK runs on a distributor theater-owning business. Most of the major movie studios do not own theaters here, however, some do. When one of their films gets released, they will automatically promote it over another film even if the other film is doing better than their own. Therefore, the balance with regards to scheduling is very important. Distributors will try not to schedule their films one after the other and they will look at the schedule to see what other films will directly affect their movie (although sometimes they ignore this and we get 3 similar movies released on the same day). Now, going back to Godzilla and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, both of them are different cases. Godzilla was the victim of a huge breakout in X-Men: Days of Future Past while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 collapsed after opening day and never recovered. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had many chances to succeed (2 holidays on opening week, mild competition on its 2nd week, semi-big blockbuster on week 3) but failed to hold well. As far as TASM 2 is concerned, Godzilla was never going to be a major blockbuster so it really had 3 weeks to do well before X-Men delivered a huge blow to its legs but it never did.

Edge of Tomorrow might have gotten the IMAX edge but it was losing to Maleficent in admissions for most of the day up until the last couple of hours. Edge of Tomorrow will pull away from Maleficent in gross thanks to IMAX and it catering more toward adults. Reviews for Edge of Tomorrow are decent so far. Maleficent had a pretty strong opening day. The big draw was Angelina Jolie and it led over Edge of Tomorrow for most of the day. This bodes well for the weekend where it should have one of the strongest increases. Also, theaters are noticing the high admissions and have upgraded its screens over Edge of Tomorrow's and even X-Men's at some locations. Early reviews are fantastic. Devastating for Godzilla. With this poor hold, weekend showtimes have already started to drop or disappear altogether in favour of Overheard 3 previews. Similarly bad for Neighbors. Decent for Aberdeen. Some theater owners definitely underestimated the power of this comic book series. I saw a lot of theaters trying to squeeze in and add more shows to X-Men on Friday and Saturday. Going back to 2011, X-Men: First Class held well in its first few weeks before Transformers 3 killed its run. I see something similar happening again although legs won't be as great as a lot of demand has been met this weekend. Captain America 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past's excellent OW could not have been achieved more differently though. While Captain America 2 took advantage of the empty marketplace and the holiday, X-Men: Days of Future Past had to rely on its own branding and goodwill from First Class and rave early reviews for this film to propel it to a powerful opening weekend. It also had to contend with coming off of a 3m weekend the previous week while Captain America 2 had 2 weekends of 2m before it to bolster its opening weekend. Reviews are starting to pour in for X-Men: Days of Future Past and they are excellent. It has already matched Captain America 2's rating in just 4 days. Although a sci-fi Tom Cruise film and a classic fairy tale open next week, they won't be heavy hitters and X-Men will be riding the wave of popularity into the Monday holiday. I see it falling just 40% next weekend to about 1.8-1.9m. X-Men: Days of Future Past will be crossing 6m in just 15 days. Godzilla was trampled by X-Men. While it had a pretty good opening weekend, it never was going to be a mainstay at the box office. It was sandwiched between 2 of the biggest films of the year and it paid the price on its 2nd weekend. 3m is in jeopardy unless if it pulls out a good hold next weekend. Neighbors did not have a good 2nd weekend but it at least held better than the rest of the top 5. 1m is not happening since it has been falling quite rapidly and reviews are mixed. The Amazing Spider-Man 2's 4th weekend did not bring any joy to Sony. One of the worst legs I've seen in a mega blockbuster in ages. While it will crawl past 7m, it is a huge disappointment. This was expected to contend for 10m and it looked like it had a chance of doing so after its opening day but every day after that has been a major disaster. The fact that it will not beat Captain America 2's gross is surprising and humilating after the first Amazing Spider-Man film had over a 3 multiplier over Captain America's gross. Aberdeen is also another underperformer. This broke through 1m on Sunday but it picked a bad release date and the film was not received well enough to cut through and be a secondary performer at the box office. Beyond the top 5, The Little House had a very good opening weekend. It was showcased in only 4 theaters but it held up nicely throughout the weekend and brought home with at least a $7,500 PTA. Extremely good hold for The Eternal Zero. WOM is very strong for this Japanese flick.

Judging from early reactions and trends, this should pass both Captain America 2 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and make at least 8m. Dreadful for Godzilla but 3m can still happen if it does not majorly collapse next week. So-so for Neighbors this weekend but overall, it is a great total so far for both Seth Rogen and Zac Efron in Hong Kong. Another weekend drop over 60% for TASM 2. This is following Clash of the Titans' trajectory albeit with slightly better holds. This will barely cross 7m and will finish with just over a 2 multiplier. One of the more disappointing recent entries for Pang Ho Cheung but it does pass 1m this weekend.
  20. Saturday update:X-Men: Days of Future Past is currently scorching the box office with nearly 79,000 admissions. It has a chance of breaking 80,000 admissions depending on how well its 10 PM and 11 PM showtimes do. It is almost 7,000 admissions up on Captain America 2's opening holiday Saturday with 2 more hours to go.

It's interesting to look back at First Class. It had a strong opening day, good Friday and an excellent weekend. Days of Future Past will follow a similar pattern although Friday should see a bigger boost and Saturday should be slightly weaker. It won't have that outstanding hold that First Class saw on Sunday but it should see a very good drop. Reviews are looking great as its rating has gone up from the morning. It is very close to Captain America 2's rating and when you consider that opening day audiences are more fickle than weekend audiences, this will play very well for the next few weeks. As for the others, Godzilla dropped 64% on its 2nd Thursday. Its drop is not bad right now but it will see enormous drops on Saturday/Sunday due to increased demand for X-Men. 3m will not be happening. Neighbors did not suffer as much as Godzilla. It's the only Hollywood comedy out right now so its drops should be better than most films this week. Like Godzilla, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feel the true effects of X-Men's power this weekend. Big drop for Aberdeen. It will soon be displaced by Delete My Love. The Little House did OK numbers. Exceptional hold for Delete My Love. Good for The Eternal Zero. Massive fall for Transcendence. Pre-sales took a huge jump on Wednesday. It is running a quarter better than Captain America 2 currently in admissions. Pricing wise though, it is not getting a blockbuster surcharge unlike Captain America 2 or The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but with strong pre-sales like these, it should be able to overcome the surcharge factor here. 3 years ago, X-Men: First Class had very strong walk-ins on opening day (more than 2/3 of admissions were walk-ins). For Days of Future Past, it won't match a 3 multiplier like First Class did but it will break 40,000 admissions today. Looking at pre-sales, X-Men seems to be doing great at almost every location. It has even stolen a Friday night IMAX showtime of Godzilla at iSQUARE. Even its 3D showtimes seem quite strong by comparison to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or Captain America 2. Neighbors had a muted start on Thursday last week. Better than expected drop for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
