  1. 7.5-8m. July 23 Weekend Actuals 1. Ant-Man - around $1,570,000 (-30.0%)/$4,772,310 2. Inside Out - $1,425,288/$1,767,338 3. Minions - around $800,000 (-57.4%)/$9,076,146 4. Monster Hunt - around $240,000 (-45.6%)/$914,785 5. Insidious: Chapter 3 - $152,794 6. Paris Holiday - $95,909/$100,860 7. Magic Mike - $86,287 8. Terminator: Genisys - $3,868,864 9. Jurassic World - $12,384,264 10. Ted 2 - $3,807,940 Excellent hold for Ant-Man. Deadline reports that Inside Out bows to the biggest OW Pixar release ever (although Incredibles made 1.52m OW according to BOM.) Minions had another iffy hold but it fell less than expected. Encouraging hold for Monster Hunt. Insidious 3 opens below the original but above the second installment. Paris Holiday and Magic Mike opened horribly. July 30 Predictions 1. Mission Impossible 5 - $2,500,000 2. Inside Out - $1,100,000 (-23%) 3. Ant-Man - $738,000 (-53%) 4. Minions - $300,000 (-63%) 5. Monster Hunt - $110,000 (-54%) Mission Impossible 5 will be HK's last 2m OW grosser of the summer. Pre-sales look good and reviews will bolster walk-ins quite a bit. In the face of big competition, Inside Out will ease off about 20-30% this weekend thanks to low admissions on Thursday/Friday. Pre-sales are looking very strong with some theaters already matching MI5's pre-sales on Friday despite only being out half a day. Ant-Man had a great hold last weekend but another action film being in the marketplace will slice its legs. Minions has not had good holds but it has not experienced a terrible hold yet. Mission Impossible 5 will take away screens and showtimes from it but no new direct competition should keep it from being hurt drastically. Monster Hunt had an OK hold last weekend but Mission Impossible 5/Inside Out should pose a threat to it on the weekend at Broadway/AMC theaters which should see it stumble more than 50%.

On the surface Minions held up quite well despite direct competition from Inside Out but looking at other holds this weekend, it seems it should have held even better. Monster Hunt was not left behind on its 2nd weekend despite facing a new opener and a huge holdover. Quite a good opening for Insidious 3 when the top 3 combined for more than 4m.

Minions had a decent hold in admissions despite the direct competition from Inside Out, however, many theaters switched many Minions showtimes to 2D this week. It'll be interesting to see how hard it fell in gross. Monster Hunt had a decent hold. Some theaters dropped Monster Hunt this week so to only fall half in admissions is not bad. Minions pre-sales look OK so far but the transition from 3D to 2D and smaller screens means less walk-in seats available and lower gross. WOM has been terrible and with another animation picture in play, walk-ins will be lower. Bad for Monster Hunt. Magic Mike is doing well with the 7 PM showtimes but other showings have been slow.

Spivet - $112,833 San Andreas - $5,012,266 Note: Please ignore Terminator: Genisys's total in previous posts. I got that figure from The-Numbers which is inaccurate. Ant-Man had a monster opening. Theaters had to add screens or shift this to the biggest theater on the weekend. It'll easily pass 5m and has a shot at 6m. Minions did not have a great hold. It had all the elements of repeating on top with a good drop but word of mouth is pretty bad for this one. As of Tuesday, it stands at $8,067,323. Monster Hunt had a poor opening. Though Broadway/AMC put this on 2 screens, it did not come close to selling out prime showtimes. Terminator: Genisys fell hard this weekend but it has put up a good total in HK. Inside Out has already crossed $300,000 in just previews. It will make more than 1.5m next weekend. Jurassic World has done a fantastic job. Total stands at $12,342,292 after Tuesday. __________________________________________________ Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation will get sneak previews on July 29.

Where Minions will hurt this weekend is the drop in seats (60-70% fall) and the drop in prices with more 2D showings available. WOM is sinking in fast. This is heading north of 5m. Minions had a much weaker Sunday increase than expected. Next week, it should crumble at the hands of Inside Out although there's still a chance at 10m. There will be no direct competition on July 30 but the yearly Doraemon release is out the first week of August. That is telling since the distributor usually only move Doraemon films to August if they expect too much competition. Monster Hunt was a huge letdown. It got premium showtimes at Broadway/AMC (the biggest theater chain in HK) with 2 screens this weekend but it lagged behind the admissions of both Ant-Man and Minions. Terminator: Genisys went down in flames this week but it has had a pretty great run. Inside Out is gaining steam but the admissions are a tad worrisome. The admissions numbers look a bit low which suggest a softer opening next weekend. From what I saw, it did not record a sellout at all the past 2 weekends but the uptick in admissions this week is encouraging. Weak Minions WOM has also helped and should play a slight role in next week's opening.

  16. Minions has already fallen behind Monsters University's 2nd Thursday in admissions. At this point, it looks like it will go down about 55% for a 1.6m 2nd weekend and around a 7.2m total in 11 days. The sequel is getting slammed on review sites. It's definitely making an impact this weekend as many showtimes are more than half empty in the afternoon. Ant-Man has surprised. It is beating Minions despite a 2:1 showtimes handicap and it will be the winner this weekend unless if theaters decide to give Minions a huge push on Saturday/Sunday. It looks like most theaters won't do this, however, as MCL has given Ant-Man bigger screens and The Grand has upgraded Ant-Man with more showtimes and chopped Minions showtimes down on Saturday/Sunday. Early word of mouth is looking really good. I see Ant-Man winning with 2.1m this weekend while Minions will slip to 2nd with 1.6m. Inside Out previews continue this weekend ahead of next week's launch. I do not foresee a big opening though. It does have the Pixar brand but this movie is a hard sell for audiences here. There's no cute characters or name recognition to hang on to. This is probably why Disney let Minions have the July 9th weekend and moved Inside Out 2 weeks later. It could open with about 2m next weekend.

As a result, it pummeled the 2 big holdovers Fast & Furious 7 & Little Big Master down over 75% this weekend. Fast & Furious 7 has lifted the series into blockbuster territory in HK. Once regarded as a bit player for a week, Fast & Furious 7 has achieved massive success here, up 1191% over Fast and Furious. Though Avengers 2 has crumbled its legs, its total up to this point has made up for it. The Fast & Furious series has always been lapped by the Southeast Asia countries but this has finally made its mark as a tentpole release. This should be able to muscle its way toward 7.6m before leaving theaters. Surprise hit of the spring, Little Big Master, continued its impressive run by passing 5.5m this week. 6m looks out of reach but it has shown to be quite resilient the past few weeks, garnering great word of mouth and capturing the hearts of many.
