  1. DM2 is doing unbelievable numbers. It's been holding extremely well against major animation competition. MoS made over 2m on opening weekend. It was always going to make 4m even with the bad holds. It also had a holiday to boost its numbers.
  2. Monsters University is the 2nd highest grossing animation film of all time behind Toy Story 3. It passed $7.73m on Friday (HK$ 60m). Pixar (all in HKD) Toy Story - $16,817,085 A Bug's Life - $13,992,420 Toy Story 2 - $35,732,127 Monsters Inc. - $25,777,970 Finding Nemo - $31,894,016 The Incredibles - $33,790,632 Cars - $15,026,845 Ratatouille - $25,257,320 Wall-E - did not publish; around 17m Up - $33,295,722 Toy Story 3 - $89,364,118 Cars 2 - did not publish; a little more than $18,417,145 Brave - did not publish

Already past $900,000 after 3 days. Monsters University had a big increase today. I suspect that it fell less than 50% in gross. Pacific Rim is doing very well. Outstanding hold for Despicable Me 2. Doraemon did quite good. It has fallen off a bit from last year's Doraemon but it is still ahead in gross. Turbo did OK. Tales from the Dark 1 has not done well since opening weekend. Tiny Times is nudging up a bit. Fantastic for HK: Forbidden Super Hero. Average people per showing was over 125 today.

SDU: Sex Duties Unit won't gain much this weekend due to being a III film. Great for Despicable Me 2. Doraemon did well. Very good hold for Turbo. Not impressed with Tiny Times. HK: Forbidden Super Hero is doing amazing. Tales from the Dark 1 is falling off quickly.

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum saw a smaller decrease from last year's Doraemon offering. Marvelous for Despicable Me 2. Not bad for Turbo. Tales from the Dark 1 is disappearing. Tiny Times is doing soft numbers. It might be able to get to $50,000 this weekend but it's weekend number is shaping up to be pretty bad. Disconnect is doing good from just 4 theaters. Should make about $35,000 this weekend. It's not listed but HK: Forbidden Super Hero is doing awesome in 2 theaters. It will make about $30,000-$35,000 this weekend for a PTA above $15,000.

It will beat X-Men Origins: Wolverine's opening day and 5-day opening weekend. SDU: Sex Duties Unit backdoor'd Monsters University for 2nd. Though the film wasn't directed by Pang Ho Cheung, he is most certainly the driving force behind the movie and the admissions. This won't beat Vulgaria's opening weekend even with previews included. Monsters University held up just fine. I'm not too concerned that it had the 2nd worst hold of the top 10. All the animations held up pretty good with Doraemon opening this week. Pacific Rim had a very good hold. WOM is strong for this one. I still believe that it will get to 4m. Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum had a very good opening day. It lost to last year's Doraemon offering by a slim margin in admissions but in gross, it will jump out ahead. Great hold for Despicable Me 2. Turbo also held nicely. Tales from the Dark 1 had the only weaker hold in the top 10. Tiny Times did poorly. It did around the same as Lost in Thailand's opening day. Disconnect had a good opening day. Reviews are decent. Ok, now this weekend will decide between #2 and #3 between Pacific Rim and Monsters University. Here are the top 3 theater chains and what they are bumping up or down. It will share the biggest screen with The Wolverine at Broadway/AMC. Meanwhile, SDU: Sex Duties Unit is being heavily slashed. It has gone from the biggest screen down to the 3rd or 4th biggest screen. Pacific Rim is also getting a minor adjustment downward. UA has gone with the trio of SDU: Sex Duties Unit/The Wolverine and Pacific Rim. Monsters University is getting demoted with less showtimes or smaller screens. SDU will share the biggest screen with The Wolverine here. UA seems to be supporting SDU the most out of the 3. MCL are being very liberal and have given all 4 full day showtimes. Pacific Rim and Monsters University are getting a bigger screen/more showtimes here. The Wolverine and SDU remain unchanged.

I expect a lot of walk-ins today. Considering how many theaters put Monsters University out to pasture, that is a strong hold. Walk-ins have been a thorn in Monsters University's side though. Pacific Rim had a very good with The Wolverine striking at the heart of its demographic. Slightly disappointing for Sex Duties Unit but it could be poor WOM setting in. It should have very strong walk-ins today. Great for Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum. This is up 26% in opening day pre-sales from Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles - Animal Adventure. Despicable Me 2 held well. Turbo did quite good as well. Tiny Times is a disaster. Bad hold again for Tales from the Dark Part 1. Good for Disconnect.
  11. That had 6 films preceding it plus the novels. And Potter is a huge aberration since his popularity is on par with Spider-Man. Also I'm answering a point made about HK being a haven for young teen franchises. It's not. Films released here are hit or miss...more on the miss side.
  12. I was speaking only about very recent movies.
  13. That statement is inaccurate. On the whole, young teen franchises do not do well in HK. The biggest teen franchise, Twilight, only saw a 20% increase from the 1st film to the last. Beautiful Creatures flopped. The Host also flopped. The Hunger Games did pretty good in HK but that's merely an exception.

I know Monsters University has great pre-sales but to see it doing better than The Wolverine in pre-selling at some locations is astonishing. The only downside here is that most of Monsters University's admissions are for 2D. 3D is still doing quite well in the morning and with 7 PM showtimes. The Wolverine is doing pretty good. Its 2D 9 AM showing is doing great and 3D is not looking too bad either. If we strip out SDU: Sex Duties Unit's blocked off seats for each showtime, it actually falls to #3 behind The Wolverine which means pre-sales aren't doing so great. It could be due to having 2 weeks of special previews but word of mouth has been rancid, which was totally the opposite effect that Media Asia was going for. Pacific Rim's been affected by The Wolverine so this explains its extremely slow pre-sales. Elsewhere, The Wolverine is well out in front while Monsters University and SDU: Sex Duties Unit vie for #2. July 25 Predictions 1. The Wolverine - $1,700,000 2. Monsters University - $1,100,000 (-45.2%) 3. SDU: Sex Duties Unit - $825,000 (including previews) 4. Pacific Rim - $750,000 (-53.5%) 5. Despicable Me 2 - $170,000 (-48.2%) The Wolverine will be the lone wolf on top. Huge 3D premiums will boost its gross. Monsters University will fend off SDU and Doraemon well. SDU: Sex Duties Unit will keep close with Monsters University on Thursday and Friday but the weekend belongs to Monsters University. III movies are usually frontloaded as well. Pacific Rim will be in direct competition with The Wolverine but WOM is very good. Despicable Me 2 should get the nod over Doraemon for #5. Though last year's Doraemon did well, this year has too much competition for Doraemon to set a new high. Doraemon will likely begin in 6th place with $140,000. If these predictions (esp. The Wolverine's) hold, this July would be first July month ever to have 3 weekends hit 4m or more.

It should have hit 56,000 admissions on Saturday. But it's still a good hold overall. Pacific Rim is doing quite well. WOM is pretty good.
  21. Internet is down hence the lack of comprehensive updates. Monsters University roped in 54,041 admissions on Saturday, -36% from last week. Pacific Rim is 2nd with 41,986 admissions. Sunday: Monsters U has squeezed out 40,534 admissions with pre-selling. Pacific Rim is far back in 2nd with 22,631 admissions. Sam, I will answer your question once I get Internet back.
  22. Friday: Monsters University was #1 by about 8,000 admissions. It gained 7% while Pacific Rim was virtually flat. Saturday: Monsters University is up by nearly 15,000 admissions over Pacific Rim @ 3 PM.

Monsters University could get up to 37,000 admissions today. Pacific Rim did alright but it should only post a slight increase. Good still for Despicable Me 2 although being put on the smaller screens means a lot less walk-ins. Weak for Turbo. Surprise surprise, SDU: Sex Duties Unit has the 2nd best increase of the top 10. Tales from the Dark Pt. 1, Blind Detective, World War Z and Man of Steel all saw sloppy holds. I'm So Excited is doing good. Ok, so I don't know what happened on Saturday but UA is going full tilt in favor of Pacific Rim on Sunday. They have dropped the number of showtimes for Monsters University and given back the bigger screen to Pacific Rim. Scheduling has been really strange the past few weeks.

Nice opening for Pacific Rim. Solid hold for Despicable Me 2 although weekend might get a little rough. Turbo was as slow as a snail today. Poor for Tales from the Dark Part 1. SDU: Sex Duties Unit is rolling out with sneak previews all this week. Interesting that the decision to give city wide sneaks was made after last weekend's solid night previews. Blind Detective dropped pretty harsh. I'm So Excited had an acceptable opening from 5 theaters. World War Z got trounced by Pacific Rim. Man of Steel and Now You See Me fell sharply. From those admissions, Monsters University is looking at a 2nd Thursday gross of $351,000 (-46%). Pacific Rim has higher ticket prices so it might have made $330,000. That is $80,000 more than Prometheus's opening day ($250,000, minus previews). Factoring in those previews, however, and Pacific Rim is behind by $33,000 ($363,000). Daily admissions (2nd WKD) Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total Toy Story 3 37,405 43,000 84,470 87,651 252,526 Monsters University 34,065 34,065 Gap -3,340 -46,340 -130,810 -218,461 Note: Toy Story 3's 2nd Friday admissions are estimated. Those admissions are lower than final figures. So Monsters University is closing the gap. It performed very well today given how Pacific Rim was going to be slightly frontloaded. Of course, the weekend will put more distance between it and Toy Story 3. Most theaters are not budging on the number of showtimes for Monsters University this weekend.
