I was surprised to find out what bad reviews this has been getting, cause I found it to be excellent.

 

Outside the boring bits with Robert Redford and Julie Christie being old in a cottage its quite riveting. There's an absolutely insane cast here: Robert Redford,  Julie Christie, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Sam Elliot, Susan Sarandon, Stephen Root, Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard *draws breath*.. Stanley Tucci, Shia LaBeouf, Brendan Gleeson, Brit Marling and Lochlyn Munro all have roles of varying screen time. There aren't really any standouts but they all are good, even though Nick Nolte seems to be in a seriously ill condition. He needs to get medical help. 

 

The story is really complicated but also interesting, and the dialogue is all around excellent. The subject matter was already interesting to me, as the movie is indirectly about Weather Underground. Its a "sins of our fathers" type of story, with nice moral puzzles.

 

This is just well-written, well-directed high quality filmmaking. I say give it a try
