I've been checking random Event Cinemas for a few weeks now. A number of Gold Class over the first few days are sold out or less then 5 remaining. Most of the first listed VMAX midnights are 80%+ sold out. George Street now has 11 sessions starting between midnight and 3am. Sydney IMAX is pretty much sold out for the first day.At Sydney IMAX 4 of the 5 screenings on opening day now seem to be sold out plus 3 of the 4 Friday screenings and for some reason the 11:45am screening on Saturday morning is no longer available.

Theatres are having a big clear-out. Event Cinemas George Street in Sydney is the highest grossing complex in the country(Rth, correct me if I am wrong). On Wednesday TASM has 18 screenings across 2D and 3D. On Thursday it currently has 1 3D and 3 3D for a grand total of 4 screenings. This does seem very low so they might add a couple more before Thursday. Ted loses all its VMAX and most of it's Gold Class screens and goes from 18 to 9 screenings.TDKR opens on Thursday with at this stage 39 screenings. Some Saturday and Sunday Gold Class sessions are also sold out.

TASM is getting the most extreme cuts. 50%+ reduction in screenings just about everywhere. Ted is fairing better in some theatres. Even at George St it still keeps 2 Gold Class.

Looks like drops for holdovers could be pretty hefty.

2012 - The Showdown

I'll let the numbers speak for themselves but below is the top 4 films (soon to see a 5th film join this elite crew) for 2012 at the moment. All of these films will wind up at or above 30m. Of course The Avengers leads it all right now, but it's currently a tight race for 2nd, though Ted is very dependant on how big of a hit he takes this weekend from Batman (so is Ice Age 4 to a certain extent). The likely scenario is Batman will take 2nd with Ted in 3rd (though this could be a lot, lot closer than most would expect), The Hunger Games dips to 4th and Ice Age 4 rounding out the 5. At this stage there are probably only 2 other films which could change this line up (with one of them quite possibly a threat to the top spot), though they might be a surprise in September or later in the year too. either way it's game on...

The total of the top 50 up to July 11 2012 was $567.63m. Based on last year's ticket price, that's 44.1m tickets. Of course, there will be an increase this year, and it goes up by the same amount, it will be $13.48, which means 42.1m so far. Unfortunately I have no idea how that compares to other years.
