ITALY (Botteghino): 'Inside Out 2' is 7th biggest film of all time and biggest animated film ever!

Recommended Posts

I'm reposting the top 10 of the highest grossing films ever in Italy, this time with more precise numbers and dates and also divided in top 10 Italian movies and top 10 from the rest of the world (but basically only Hollywood)

TOP 10 Hollywood

€71M - Titanic (1998)
€65.7M - Avatar (2010)

€37.5M - The Lion King (2019)
€32.9M - The Lion King (1994)

€31.3M - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)

€31.1M - Ice Age 3 (2009)

€30.9M - The Da Vinci Code (2006)

€30.4M - Alice in Wonderland (2010)

€30.3M - Avengers: Endgame (2019)

€29.7M - Joker (2019)

TOP 10 ITA*

€65.4M - Quo Vado? (2016)
€52M - Sole a Catinelle (2013)
€47.8M - Life is Beautiful (1997)
€46.2M - Tolo tolo (2020)
€43.5M - Che Bella Giornata (2011)
€40.1M - Il Ciclone (1996)
€38.3M - Fuochi d’Artificio (1997)
€37.9M - Chiedimi se Sono Felice (2000)

€34.6M - Natale sul Nilo (2002)

€33.5M - Pinocchio (2002)

*In the Italian top 10 we have 4 movies by Zalone, then 2 for both Benigni and Pieraccioni (and "Aldo, Giovanni e Giacomo" were really close with two films in 8th and 11th position)

I must also point out that films prior to 2010 have numbers more or less certified by SIAE, while from 2010 onwards Cinetel has reached an accuracy of approximately 95% and Siae has stopped publishing reports. Therefore, for films released in the past decade there is a missing gross that goes from 1% (for action, superhero and 3D movies) to a max of 5% (in particular comedies). Not knowing those numbers with precision it's simply better to keep them that way

@Shanks it seems that the number of 71M euros for Titanic is confirmed by Siae itself and I saw it reported in several sites and blogs, I found that there were discussions about it even in the first pages of this same thread 🤷‍♂️

I simply looked at 1998, 1999 and 2000 year data and Titanic's own WW cume from various sources - Yearbook of Europe, Yearbook of Italy itself, SAIE's own yearly record and Variety's Italy gross for Titanic. It was never 71m Euro. So how does Titanic reached those numbers? It was in late 2009 when Avatar crossed it, people and bloggers started pushing Titanic to have 71m Euro and it's alright I don't hate titanic enough to write another post proving things. If you wanna keep Titanic 1st, I am alright with it.  I hate Avatar anyway :D

Ah don't worry I too care very little about both films (sorry Cameron), but for example if we compare it with La Vita è Bella, a big success released a few weeks before and with a similar ticket price if not lower, I can't see how it could have grossed less (Life is Beautiful 9.7M tickets -> 47.8M gross, Titanic 12.87M tickets -> only 59M as I've read somewhere?)

Then of course let's not forget the re-releases in 2012 (7.9M euros) and 2017 (0.3M), the gross of Titanic continues to increase and change and perhaps that's why it's so difficult to follow it, at this point I'm surprised they didn't re-released it also in 2007 for the 10 years 😅

Italy did 62M in first run and 8M in 2012 re release. 71M round off I imagine.

REAL DATA

Titanic: 7,921,741 (€ 42,337,986)  --- 1998

Titanic 3D: 836,419 (€ 7,884,271)  ---- 2012

REASON FOR DISCREPENCY:

See, In 1998:  The Above Data represented 71.02% of GROSS and 65.20% of Spectators of Whole of Italy.

Why 71.02% of Gross and 65.20% of Spectators because Both SAIE and Cinetel only Covered Major Cities and left out Semi-urban and Rural Areas of ITALY. What is difference between Main Cities and Small Cities? Main Cities have higher Ticket Prices compared to Smaller ones. SO, SPECTATORS can be more in Rural but Ticket cost will always reduce.

SAIE isn't wrong at all when it does this by taking 65.20% Of Spectators and converts those 7,921,741 (1998) into 12,871,789 (1998) Spectators by extrapolation. SAIE ONLY EVER TOOK SPECTATOR'S and never did it for GROSS.

Fault lies with other People.

  • Those who favor Titanic will take 65% of Spectators to get higher Spectator Count and then put ATP on those to get even higher GROSS.
  • Those who favor Avatar, will always take 71% of Gross of Titanic and Avatar will automatically out-gross Titanic because In 2009, Avatar's Total Gross was only 93.93%
  • There is also 3rd Group of people which extrapolates for movie they like and leave other out other completely by not extrapolating it as they don't understand Italy's number or just don't care.

REALITY is € 42,337,986 should be extrapolated with 71.02% and not 65.20%.

$68M is officially reported gross which would be €62M ish at that time.

That is another mystery as to why Fox was doing that. Whatever Cinetel was reporting, Fox assumed it to be exactly 68% and then extrapolated around it and reported it. Also, Cinetel was mostly reporting in LIRA.  Titanic was also first movie to cross 100 Billion LIRA, on extrapolation.

Now, What I am saying is that your info is probably right, According to various Old Articles, Fox's method of Extrapolation was taking Cinetel Gross to be exactly 68% Of ITALY total.

Cinetel's reported €42,337,978 becomes €62,261,732 (on extrapolation) which is $67,976,736. [1 EUR = 1.09179 USD. According to exchange rate of European union in Feb, 1998.]

studios don't extrapolate and stuff. they know their business to last penny. Cinetel, comscore, etc are third party information providers.

You sure about that? Sony's number for India are true then? According to Sony, NWH earned $36.2m, but you say $34.90m (which I accept to be true).

Issue in India seems like has to do with 3D box office. I will try to get clarity on same.

Besides some do inflate numbers, but that rarely happen in Europe.

Yesterday 720k euros for Death on the Nile and 130k for Marry Me, firmly in first and second position

Including today's probable gross, Death on the Nile will already surpass the totals of Scream, King Richard, Nightmare Alley and King's Man in just 4 days, I really hope for a total of over 5 million by the end of its run

In the meantime the famous thriller director Dario Argento announced a new film to be released on February 24, after a 10-year absence. I think it won't have any problem in grossing more than Scream, but let's see how far it will go

Damn I completely forgot about the release of Uncharted (I didn't see it advertised anywhere), really surprised by the good result, about 70% higher than the debut of Death on the Nile a week ago

In addition, from March 10 food and drinks will be allowed in theaters again, so we can already expect a good hold for Batman in its second weekend...

With No Way Home coming to the end of its run and The Batman coming out in a couple of weeks, I repost the list of the highest grossing superhero movies in Italy (Marvel and Dc):

Avengers: Endgame (2019) - €30.28 million

Joker (2019) - €29.65 million

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) - €24.5 million

Spider-Man (2002) - €19.26 million

Spider-Man 2 (2004) - €18.98 million

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - €18.78 million

Spider-Man 3 (2007) - €18.05 million

The Avengers (2012) - €18.01 million

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) - €16.57 million

Iron Man 3 (2013) - €16.09 million

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - €14.67 million

Note:

For films prior to 2010 the total is actually higher, and the older they are the more increases the difference between the official and the real number

With Batman finally coming out today I'll do a very quick update on the situation, Death on the Nile and Uncharted will exceed 5 million this weekend, No Way Home could leave the top 10 for the first time (the current total is €24.5 million, or 27/28M dollars), and Sing 2 is surprisingly still in top 15

For The Batman I'm expecting €10M as the minimum, with 12/13 million as a more likely outcome
