No surprise who took the weekend. Sherlock Holmes 2 opened with a very strong 6.5m. It handily pulled in an average of over 16k on 336 screens. The original film opened in 2nd place over the boxing day weekend in 2009 (behind only avatar of course) and managed 3.8m for it's opening 2 days. 6.5m over 4 days is very impressive and bodes well for Sherlock's future. The original film went on to make 26m which will be tough but possible given the size of the opening. A better comparison is I am legend which opened on the same weekend back in 2008. Legend opened to a stunning 9m. While SH2 isn't on the same level, that film only managed to make it to 23m something i think with better WOM SH2 can pass.<br>

Second of course was the 3rd entry in the Alvin the Chipmunks Franchise. Chipwrecked managed to pull in 3.6m over it's first full weekend. It opened on last sunday (new years day) with an excellent 1.3m. Alvin 3 has accumulated 9m which is an excellent start and partly unexpected given the weakness in the US. Most interestingly is Chipwrecked is running very similarly to how the Squeakuel performed back in 2009 / 2010. The Squekuel opened on boxing day and made 3.3m for it's first 2 days (not very different from chipwrecked's 2.8m it made on sunday and monday). the 2nd film had made 11.3m by the same point, but given it had an extra day of play and enjoyed the run between christmas and new years, this is as expected. even more importantly, the 3rd film's 2nd weekend was bigger the 2nd films 2nd weekend but nearly 300k. This should indicate a finish easily north of 15m if not passing 20m. The 2nd film made 23m. Of interest the first film made 17.7m off a 4m opening weekend back in 2008 in 2nd place behind I am legend (which means it's opened on the same weekend essentially though the third film has had a further 4 days of play including new years.)<br>

Last weeks number 1 slipped to third and made a still strong 1.9m. Tin Tin finally passed 10m this week and continues to be targeting a total around 15m. Holding steady in 4th was Tower Heist which dipped a light 32% on it's way to 7.3m. Rounding out the 5 for the 2nd weeend running was War Horse which also had a light 28% dip. War Horse has now managed 6.7m so far and both films appear to be on target 12m to 14m finishes. <br>

Other notes in the top 20 - Mission Impossible 4 continued on it's way to a total of 18m+ and still continues to have an outside shot of reaching 20m which would simply be amazing given the poor performance of the 3rd film in the franchise. Happy Feet 2 collapsed this week in comparison to the other boxing day films and looks like it wind up under 10m if it continues to fall like this (given the competition it faces from the muppets this weekend coming, things don't look good for it). Puss's chances at 20m have been completely shot this weekend and will now be lucky to pass 15m given the dip it faced this past weekend. Finally, Breaking Dawn 1 looks like it will pass out of the top 20 very shortly with a healthy but disappointing total of 28.5m.<br>
