Movies better known than those that beat them for #1 at the box office

Recommended Posts

Hello box office geeks! This is reeeeeeeeeeally specific and stupid but I thought it would be fun.

How many movies can you name that didn't hit #1 at the box office (in the US) but are better known than those that blocked them at their peak?

From recent history I can name:

Law Abiding Citizen > Where the Wild Things Are

Percy Jackson > Valentine's Day

Machete > The American

The Tourist > The Chronicles of Narnia 3

In Time > Puss In Boots

Project X > The Lorax

John Carter > The Lorax (though in the WORST possible way)

The Internship > The Purge

Kick-Ass 2 > The Butler

The World's End > The Butler

Need for Speed > Mr. Peabody & Sherman

How many can YOU guys name?

Machete > The American yeah

The Tourist > The Chronicles of Narnia 3 uh...maybe

In Time > Puss In Boots no

Project X > The Lorax no

John Carter > The Lorax (though in the WORST possible way) not sure

Side Effects > Identity Thief no

The Internship > The Purge no

Kick-Ass 2 > The Butler no

The World's End > The Butler not sure

Possibilities (looking at BOM's list of biggest movies that never hit #1, and the weekends where they ranked highest):

Casino Royale > Happy Feet

We're the Millers > Elysium

Beauty and the Beast > Hook

Slumdog Millionaire > Madea Goes to Jail, Jonas Brothers 3D

The King's Speech > No Strings Attached, The Green Hornet, The Dilemma

American Beauty > Double Jeopardy, Three Kings

Mulan > the X-Files movie (1st wknd), Doctor Dolittle (2nd wknd)

I have more thoughts, but I'd rather not use them all up in one post.

Narnia was definitely the weakest in the series. but The tourist was sleep inducingly boring.

And John Carter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lorax (one of the worst animated films I've ever seen)

Casino Royale > Happy Feet Maybe

We're the Millers > Elysium Nope

Beauty and the Beast > Hook Yes, though both are classics

Slumdog Millionaire > Madea Goes to Jail, Jonas Brothers 3D Definitely, hahaha

The King's Speech > No Strings Attached, The Green Hornet, The Dilemma Yes

American Beauty > Double Jeopardy, Three Kings Yes, although Three Kings is also very well known

Mulan > the X-Files movie (1st wknd), Doctor Dolittle (2nd wknd) Yes

You think Elysium is better-known than We're the Millers? I had almost forgotten about Elysium when I looked up Millers' weekend charts.

I also disagree about The Internship being better-known than The Purge. Again, I had almost forgotten about The Internship.

I agree, Three Kings is close to as well-known as American Beauty. But I do not think Hook is as much a classic as Beauty and the Beast.

But I do not think Hook is as much a classic as Beauty and the Beast.

That's true, but you're comparing a lesser part of Spielberg's filmography to one of the most celebrated Disney movies. Hook is the most loved movie from 1991 after B&TB, Silence of the Lambs, and Terminator 2.

Here are some more thoughts:

The Bourne Identity > Scooby-Doo

Big > Crocodile Dundee II (1st wknd), Red Heat (2nd wknd) - but not > Who Framed Roger Rabbit (3rd wknd) or Coming to America (4th wknd)

Scream > Michael (but not > Jerry Maguire, which was #2 on that weekend)

Ice Age 3 > Transformers 2 (2nd weekend) Maybe, though I doubt it

Over the Hedge > The Da Vinci Code Same as above

Hercules > Face-off Maybe

Hunchback of Notre Dame > Eraser Yes

Life of Pi > Twilight BD2 (2nd weekend) Yes. Also better remembered than Lincoln and Rise of the Guardians

Edge of Tomorrow > The Fault in our Stars Too soon to tell really

Pacific Rim > Grown Ups 2 Yes, definitely

Lilo & Stitch > Minority Report Stitch is an iconic character, but I'm not sure if the MOVIE is as well remembered

Kung Fu Panda 2 > Hangover 2 No way

Some I found from 2004-09:

Shaun of the Dead > The Forgotten (and everything else above Shaun of the Dead)

Team America: World Police > Shark Tale and Friday Night Lights

Saw > The Grudge and Ray

Million Dollar Baby > Hide & Seek and Are We There Yet?

Lord of War > Just Like Heaven and The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Jarhead > Chicken Little

Little Miss Sunshine > Invincible and likely Ricky Bobby

Crank > Invincible (2nd week at #1)

Zodiac > Wild Hogs

Grindhouse > Blades of Glory, Meet the Robinsons, and Are We Done Yet?

Rambo 2008 > Meet the Spartans (still baffled that the latter got #1)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall > The Forbidden Kingdom

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button > Marley & Me and Bedtime Stories

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans > Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Feel free to comment on these if you want.

Some I found from 2004-09:

Shaun of the Dead > The Forgotten (and everything else above Shaun of the Dead) Yes

Team America: World Police > Shark Tale and Friday Night Lights I'd say so. FNL isn't totally forgotten, but Team America is more talked about today.

Saw > The Grudge and Ray Yeah, feels like it to me.

Million Dollar Baby > Hide & Seek and Are We There Yet? Maybe. Are We There Yet did spin off that TV series, but not sure how remembered it is. I don't hear people talk about MDB much, but it may just be I'm not listening to the right people. Though I'd wager it's probably more remembered than any other Eastwood movie of the 00s that's not Gran Torino...

Lord of War > Just Like Heaven and The Exorcism of Emily Rose I guess. I don't really know anyone personally who talks about LoW, but they aren't the people who would watch it anyway. I do hear more talk about it on podcasts and blogs and stuff than I ever do of the other two.

Jarhead > Chicken Little Probably.

Little Miss Sunshine > Invincible and likely Ricky Bobby Not Talladega Nights. I think this is a Scream vs. Michael/Jerry Maguire situation where it's more remembered than the #1, but probably even with the #2, even if the people who know them well don't necessarily overlap.

Zodiac > Wild Hogs Maybe

Grindhouse > Blades of Glory, Meet the Robinsons, and Are We Done Yet? Possibly. Grind house at least has a cult following; even the people who remember Talladega Nights more than Little Miss Sunshine may not remember Blades of Glory.

Rambo 2008 > Meet the Spartans Yes. Even people who trash Seltzer and Friedberg seem to forget MTS...

Forgetting Sarah Marshall > The Forbidden Kingdom Yes; I forgot about TFK too.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button > Marley & Me and Bedtime Stories Can't decide myself. I still remember hearing how people cried over Marley, but how many still remember it now? I can't say.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans > Paul Blart: Mall Cop No. Even if most of what I hear about Paul Blart is negative, I can't say I hear more about Underworld 3.

Feel free to comment on these if you want.

More ones from me:

The Little Mermaid > Everything but Back to the Future Part II that beat it on its three #3 weekends: Harlem Nights (1st/2nd wks), Look Who's Talking (1st wk), The War of the Roses (7th wk), Tango & Cash (7th wk)

Schindler's List > Everything that topped it on the two weekends where it got up to #4: The Naked Gun 33 1/3 (14th/15th wks), Guarding Tess (14th wk), Monkey Trouble (14th wk), The Paper (15th wk)

The Emperor's New Groove > What Women Want Maybe - is Groove still known within only a smaller niche of the general public? On the other hand, I guess What Women Want is sort of forgotten. Also, this is another situation where a movie that came between it and #1 - The Grinch - is probably equally remembered, if not more.

The Prince of Egypt > You've Got Mail While I don't know how much Prince of Egypt has endured, Mail feels forgotten - in no small part because it has dated pretty badly.

Aladdin > Home Alone 2 Yes, but doesn't qualify because it did eventually get to #1.

Dead Poets Society > Star Trek V: The Final Frontier I guess - outside of the fanbase, who mostly remembers it negatively, I think Trek V is pretty well forgotten. Again, there is an equally or more-remembered movie in between - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The Big Lebowski > U.S Marshals Does this qualify? Titanic was #1 that weekend; does it at least have to be more remembered than the #1 film on its highest-ranking weekend(s)?

Some more:

Gothika > Cat in the Hat Could be - I always thought Cat in the Hat was remembered for how bad it was, but the more I think about it, it's probably just forgotten outside the Internet.

Freaky Friday > Jeepers Creepers 2 Probably. It also opened #2 behind S.W.A.T., I don't feel like many remember that one either.

Zoolander > Don't Say a Word Yes, no question.

Scary Movie 2 > Cats & Dogs Yeah, I think so.

Anastasia > Mortal Kombat: Annihilation Yes. No matter how remembered Anastasia is among the general public, MK:A is remembered less.

Seven Years in Tibet > Kiss the Girls Probably; the Alex Cross movies seem to have faded from public consciousness.

Austin Powers 1 > Breakdown Yes.

L.A. Confidential > In & Out, Wishmaster (and possibly The Game)

48 Hrs. > Tootsie

Dirty Dancing > Stakeout

Die Hard > A Fish Called Wanda (and for that matter, everything else that outranked it on every weekend it was in wide release, except for Roger Rabbit and Coming to America on its first couple weekends)
