Horror and thriller films are doing exceptionally well this year. 'The Snowman' has amazingly outdone the opening weekend of both 'The Girl on the Train' (32,260 admissions) and 'Gone Girl' (55,449 admissions). The latter went on to 276.9K admissions, which is a tough feat to achieve for 'The Snowman'. Even a total just above 200K admissions would leave me satisfied. 'Blade Runner 2049' held relatively well, probably reflecting good word of mouth, and there is a possibility it will reach 100K admissions. 'It' dropped hard in the face of 'The Snowman'. The clown has a very comfortable lead in total admissions but I do wonder how close to it the snowman can actually get. Quiet openings in #4 and #5, small drops for a string of animated films lower down the chart. 'Despicable Me 3' is still on its way to beat 'Minions' and 'Finding Dory'. It will be interesting to see whether it can reach 300K admissions, becoming the 3rd 2017 film to do so.

Hi Quigley if DM3 crosses 300K, where will it rank among all-time animated films in Greece?

Thx!

It's hard to say for sure. I have only found data going back to about 2003.

This is what I have for the Top 10:

Ranking Title Admissions
1 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 384,829
2 Ice Age: The Meltdown 346,500*

*my own estimate; very confident it's between 335,000 and 355,000

3 Finding Nemo 340,731 3D re-release: 28,110; Total: 368,841
4 Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa 323,607
5 Ratatouille 312,019
6 Inside Out 310,104
7 Ice Age: Continental Drift 305,445
8 Happy Feet 295,500
9 Finding Dory 295,338
10 Minions 290,513

I think 'Despicable Me 3' is very likely to end up at #8, even if it doesn't top 300K admissions.

Even if we had, the chart for CGI animation would be the same. All CGI animations were bombing in Greece before Nemo. The Toy Story's, Monsters, Shrek 1 even the first Ice Age which turned into a giant franchise with sequels didn't do much at the boxoffice, most kids discovered them on VHS/DVD/Cable. The Disney Renaissance movies were very popular in the 90s, though.

It has been a very snowy October for the Greek box office, due to the impressive performance of a film that bombed in most other countries. The same cannot be said for 'Geostorm' and 'mother!' which bombed here as much as everywhere else. The 'Snowman' dropped much worse than 'Gone Girl' (-20%) and 'The Girl on the Train' (-43%). It is bound to clear 150K admissions but 200K admissions is in no way guaranteed. 'Blade Runner 2049' might just inch past 100K admissions and 'It' will inch past 'Fifty Shades Darker' to rank 4th for the year. 300K admissions is not in the picture anymore, unlike 'Despicable Me 3' which will probably get there in about 3 weeks. It is looking to capitalise on next week's national holiday: schools will be closed on the 27th due to a holiday on Saturday the 28th of October. In Thessaloniki, Greece's second-biggest city, schools will also be closed on the 26th, due to the celebration of the city's patron saint and the city's liberation from the Ottoman Empire. Gru will have to put up with 'The LEGO Ninjago Movie', although it will probably not affect it in any major way. Nothing else exciting to report, except that I am very curious about the performance of next week's Greek film 'Το τελευταίο σημείωμα' ('The Last Note').

'The Last Note' didn't do as well as expected. It wasn't far off from previous Greek historical dramas, though, and it will need a big multiplier, as they all did, in order to reach a respectable number of admissions (300K+). It was not the best of numbers for the director, Pantelis Voulgaris, either.

As you can see, the opening weekend is hardly a predictor for success. We can only wait and see but with 'Thor 3', 'Justice League' and 'Star Wars 8' coming up, I doubt that this can hold well enough to get far past 300K admissions. Even 200K admissions are not guaranteed at this point.

Among other openers, 'Ninjago' did relatively well. 'The LEGO Movie' sold 18,123 admissions on opening weekend and 'The LEGO Batman Movie' sold 21,173 admissions. There is nothing notable about other openers. Holdovers in general dropped heavily. 'The Snowman' will likely not get far past 150K admissions. 'Despicable Me 3' was the only holdover in the Top 10 to increase from last weekend. It has past 'Minions' (290.5K admissions) in the meantime, to become the biggest animated film of the franchise, the biggest film for Illumination Entertainment and the 10th biggest animated film of all time. Admittedly, this was a school holiday frame, so its numbers could drop sharply from here. Overall, though, its chances of reaching 300K admissions are quite high and it could even surpass 'Pirates 5' (309.7K admissions) in the long run. '2049' is still trying to push itself past 100K admissions and 'It' is days away from topping 'Fifty Shades Darker'. It will not get much further though.

Next week, 'Thor 3' will enter the scene. An opening around 60K admissions would be solid and certainly enough for a 1st-place finish. With 10 months of the year behind us, 2017 is 6% behind 2016, 1% behind 2015, on par with 2012 and way ahead of 2013 and 2014. Barring major surprises, 2017 should finish with around 9.5-10 million admissions.

'Thor 3' opened spot on, with a bit more than 60K admissions. It was the biggest 'Thor' opening. Interestingly enough, neither the 'Iron Man' films nor 'Thor' have seen as huge increases as the 'Captain America' films have seen. 'Ragnarok' nevertheless scored the biggest superhero opening of the year, but 'Justice League' will likely top that. If 'Ragnarok' were to follow the sequel's trajectory, which also opened in November, it would reach 150K admissions. With 'Justice League' opening in 2 weeks, that will be a tough feat I think.

'The Last Note' has a very impressive sophomore hold. It has crossed 100K admissions already. If it were to maintain the same % drops for the rest of its run, it would reach about 330K admissions. It seems almost impossible for it not to cross 200K admissions but whether it can reach 300K admissions is not clear. A number of other Greek films open in the next few weeks, with 'Kazantazkis' being another historical drama by the director of 'El Greco' (767K admissions). It's difficult to tell which ones will break out and which ones will bomb but this one is about a very famous Greek poet; the film seems to strike the proper tone; the release date is ideal, but of course it will all boil down to "wait and see". There is another film, though, that will certainly reach 300K admissions and that is 'Despicable Me 3'. It has just crossed 'Dory' and is gonna give 'Pirates 5' a run for its money (309.7K admissions). 'Ninjago' had a solid drop but is behind both its predecessors at the same point in their run.

A trio of smaller films opened mid-chart, the most impressive being "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" which scored a 1,306-admission per-screen average. Other holdovers held poorly. The 'Snowman' had a promising opening but ended up doing much worse then 'Gone Girl'. [UPDATE:] Total weekend admissions reached 171K, which is higher than last year but does not break into this year's Top 5 weekends.

Regarding 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer', I think it is relevant to point out that it is directed by Giorgos Lanthimos, a Greek director who has received many international awards for his past films. He does not produce films in Greece anymore but they remain popular arthouse films in Greece.

Director: Giorgos Lanthimos
Title National OW Release date Total admissions
Ὁ καλύτερός μου φίλος (My Best Friend) Fri 2 Mar 01 350,000
Κινέττα (Kinetta) <1,000 Thu 22 Mar 07
Κυνόδοντας (Dogtooth) 4,500 Thu 22 Oct 09 40,000
Ἄλπεις (Alps) 3,290 Thu 27 Oct 11 9,064
Ὁ ἀστακός (The Lobster) 11,005 Thu 22 Oct 15 67,136
Ὁ θάνατος τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐλαφιοῦ (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) 9,139 Thu 2 Nov 17

'My Best Friend' was more of a blockbuster comedy. His later films are the most critically acclaimed ones. It will be interesting to see if 'The Killing of a Scared Deer' can beat 'The Lobster'.

It probably won't. Dogtooth was a very big deal in the arthouse circuit because of the Cannes win and it became a much much bigger deal a year after when it got nominated at the oscars. And then Lobster was his english-speaking debut with famous international actors and got screens even outside metropolitan areas which was unprecedent for arthouse movies.

Greek filmmakers getting oscar nominations and working with world famous actors is very rare. It hadn't happened since the 1960s until Lanthimos and the hype was huge for a few years. I think it has died down considerably and Lanthimos being an "international" filmmaker is old hat by now. It will probably do a little better than any non-Lanthimos arthouse movie of its ilk but that's about it.

There was an unexpected twist this weekend, with 'Murder on the Orient Express' doing exceedingly well compared to its North American opening. It scored the 5th best opening of 2017:

1 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales 108,145
2 It 101,387
3 Fifty Shades Darker 88,426
4 Despicable Me 3 82,418
5 Murder on the Orient Express 70,308

In the face of this sleeper hit, 'Thor 3' held quite well, with a smaller drop than both its predecessors and last year's 'Doctor Strange'. 'The Last Note' had another small drop and it is basically on par with 'With Heart & Soul', a 2009 film from the same director which just about managed to cross 200K admissions. That film had reached 148,576 admissions at the same point in its run. 'Jigsaw' opened lower than any of the 7 'Saw' films:

Saw
Title Athens OW National OW Release date Total admissions
Saw 16,000 25,200 Fri 25 Mar 05
Saw II 27,200 39,700 Thu 8 Dec 05
Saw III 39,100 57,800 Thu 9 Nov 06 166,800 (172–176K)
Saw IV 21,362 30,324 Thu 1 Nov 07 90,456 (92–94Κ)
Saw V 13,425 22,705 Thu 30 Oct 08 80,077 (82–84K)
Saw VI 9,050 13,155 Thu 22 Oct 09 44,224 (46–48K)
Saw 3D 12,993 20,628 Thu 4 Nov 10 63,369
Jigsaw 6,741 12,878 Thu 9 Nov 17

*The numbers in parentheses denote my estimate. The other number is the total admissions on the last weekend of the film's run for which data were available.

'Ninjago' has fallen far behind its predecessors. 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' had a small drop, on par with 'The Lobster's drop from 2 years ago. Similarly small were the drops for 'Gnome Alone' and 'Despicable Me 3', while 'Success Story' plummeted.
