‘El Dorado’ Blazes June Trail With ‘Alley’, ‘Hamster’ in Tow

 

“The Road to El Dorado” lead again with over $40 million while fellow Cookie Pictures staple “Damnation Alley” had a solid debut in second place. With positive reviews and audience reaction that were similar the studio has managed to amass a lot of bank this early into the summer season. In third was “Bounty Hamster” which remained strong with no family competition to speak of. In fact you can almost call it a perfect trio of a PG-13 period adventure comedy, an R-rated post-apocalyptic action flick and a PG-rated zany space romp. Meanwhile the poorly received “From a Black Sky” had a decent opening even if audience reception wasn’t all that kind with a “C+” cinemascore.

Oscorp Pictures Awaken the ‘Dead’, Box Office Trio Chug Along

 

As summer continued, O$corp Pictures found their long awaited box office success in the form of Roland Emmerich’s “Rise of the Dead” which opened to $46 million. While critical reception was very mixed audiences didn’t mind a good zombie action flick, especially in a year overcrowded with demons and ghosts. They ultimately gave the film a “B” cinemascore. The trio of “El Dorado”, “Damnation Alley” and “Bounty Hamster” kept second, third and fourth place even if the latter two switched places.

‘Odyssey’ Sails to Victory, ‘Lord’ Takes Silver Throne

 

It was no question that the strongly received “The Odyssey: The Spoils of War” was going to be a success, but few could have predicted it would come close to conquering “Voltron: Defenders of the Universe”’s opening record from a year back. Grossing a staggering $103 million, Lager Pictures’ tentpole debut handily smited the competition, with the exception of the even more acclaimed “Lord of the Flies” which debuted to $35 million. It seems like Father’s Day was a good week to release critically acclaimed adaptations of timeless literary artifacts. This must sit very well with Lager Pictures, who has a sequel to “The Odyssey” scheduled just a year from now and Alpha Pictures, which “Lord” is their only wide release of the year. Both films received an “A-” from their respective viewers. Due to very unfortunate scheduling, “Rise of the Dead” slid over seventy percent facing these two giants.

‘Odyssey’ Wins Second Battle As ‘Simulation’ Stutters, Holdovers Benefit

 

It was no question whether or not “The Odyssey: The Spoils of War” was going to take the top spot, at least not after its massive opening last week. What was a question was how “The Simulation” was going to perform and the answer was… not very well. With an opening of $22 million, well below the $30 million tracking had indicated, “Simulation” is the second major commercial disappointment of Summer Year 2. With a split reaction from critics and audiences the $125 million production is unlikely to cover its losses with repeat business. International revenues may still save it, but it’s no doubt going to sting Hourglass Pictures’ bottom line. Much lower on the box office ranks, the critically maligned “The Beach House” debuted in accordance with its abysmal projections at just $7 million. As June box office enters a cooling period, most previous releases had fairly impressive drops.

‘Odyssey’ Victorious in Third Round but ‘Fab 5’ Surprises

 

While “The Odyssey: The Spoils of War” lead a third week as we approach Independence Day the romantic comedy “Fab 5” went above expectations with a $30 million opening gross. Despite mixed leaning on poor reviews there was a fairly simple explanation for this occurrence: a staggering lack of light-hearted material in the June release period. Most of the calendar has been filled with either serious action films (“Odyssey”, “Rise of the Dead”, “Damnation Alley”) or serious dramas (“Simulation”, “Lord of the Flies”) so “Fab” seemed like a breath of fresh air. The last film you could even call a “comedy” was “The Road to El Dorado” and that was released a whole month ago. Maybe studios should look more into filling the need for light fare where there exists one.

September definitely, October will depend on if I have time to finish it. If not then October will be lumped with November on Thursday and December will be pushed to Friday.
