‘Hunchback’ Rings the Bells for Year 2, ‘Human’ Mostly Ignored

 

After a fairly busy Holiday season the box office is on a winding down period, but audiences turned out regardless, just not for the weekend’s lone new release. “Mostly Human” fared poorly with an opening under $10 million, which was expected but must have stinged Red Crescent Pictures nonetheless. With mixed to negative reviews from critics and an apparent disinterest from domestic audiences, the studio’s first release of the year may have to turn to international venues to see profit. Among holdovers “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “ReBoot” were the obvious victors, but “Faces & Voices” had a very strong hold as Oscar buzz seems to be growing.

January 12-14 (Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend):

 

‘Hunchback’ Wins MLK Photo Finish

 

It was a close race for the top position but “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” won out by a mere $50,000 difference over “Bloody Mary” (the studio estimates for the two were virtually identical). While “Mary” had a lead on Friday and Saturday its frontloading proved too much for Sunday and “Hunchback” ultimately won out. On a slightly lower scale the Tom Cruise/Ansel Elgort drama “The Lonely Zookeepers” had a decent start. Both it and “Mary” received terrible reviews from critics but their respective audiences were a bit more kind to them, giving them each a “B” cinemascore. With many of the lower-tier films starting to lose theaters, the bottom of the top 10 fell under $2 million.

‘Hunchback’ Leads Again by Default

 

With the MLK weekend proving to be rather unspectacular, the following weekend played out very much the same way. “Hunchback” won out in another close race. Why? Unappealing new offerings, simply put. Both “January Gem” and “Timmy’s Winter Vacation 2” barely scraped past $10 million. With low buzz for the former and scathing reviews for the latter, neither is looking to stick around for very long, although the sorry state of the current release schedule before mid-February might help a little bit.

Starved Audiences Search for ‘Sasquatch’, ‘Chapter’ Keeps Book Open

 

After a dearth of compelling offerings and maybe having their fill of movies like “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “ReBoot”, audiences went for this week’s new offerings in relatively large droves. The family comedy “Sasquatch” had the biggest debut of the year so far with $25 million and finally unseating “Hunchback”, while the romantic drama “Last Chapter” also performed above expectations with $21 million. Last week’s new releases saw drops in the face of competition, but the remaining holdovers stayed put.

‘Night Light’ Shines Bright over Super Bowl

 

The horror feature “Night Light” debuted to surprising numbers over the Super Bowl weekend, numbers that could’ve been even higher had people staying home to watch the game not resulted in a fairly large drop. While 30-second ads for upcoming blockbusters were more appealing on Sunday, audiences still turned out for “Night” on Friday and Saturday. Reception was also fairly positive, with audiences giving the film a “B+” cinemascore. Red Crescent Pictures should be pleased over its success. Super Bowl Sunday also had an effect on previously released films but the earlier weekend proved fruitful for them too. Interestingly, some holdovers like “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” stayed almost flat on Friday and Saturday before dropping on Sunday.

February 9-11:

 

‘Human’ Revolutionary, ‘Truth’ Piques Increased Interest

 

In the year’s first major surprise, Deus Ex adaptation “The Human Revolution” stormed the top of the box office with a far higher sum than anyone could have predicted, grossing a whopping $75 million over the pre-President’s Day weekend. Numerator Pictures must be absolutely stunned by the performance as tracking had indicated a far more modest opening of $45-50 million. Audiences were mostly pleased, giving the film a “B+” cinemascore even if some analysts suggest its length and content may hurt repeat performance a bit. On a much lower scale but also impressive, “Poison & Wine” sequel “Truth Is” overperformed its predecessor to gross $20 million over the weekend, which for an LGBT hard-R romantic drama is pretty impressive. However with negative reviews from critics and lackluster word of mouth from audiences (the film received a C- cinemascore) analysts expect the film to fade fast after Valentine’s Day.

‘Bionicle’ Wins Busy President’s Day, But High Cost Proves Detrimental

 

Endless Entertainment’s “Bionicle: Trials of the Toa” outperformed expectations over President’s Day weekend with a solid $41 million, but those numbers are a far cry from what is needed to cover its hefty $200 million price tag. Despite Peter Jackson at the helm the film received poor reviews and audiences felt underwhelmed giving it only a “B-” cinemascore. The studio’s debut venture will have to plead for strong overseas results in order to turn a profit. Similarly large were “The Human Revolution” and “The Twenty-One Balloons”, the latter receiving an “A” cinemascore from its target audience. Last week’s “Truth Is” had a hefty fall as Valentine’s Day passed and is probably going to continue to plummet from here.

Audiences Stick with Adam Jensen and ‘Balloons’, Ignore the ‘Calling’

 

As February is winding down, audiences decided to stick to previous releases instead of going to “Danger Calling”, which bombed with only $8 million. The top spot was a close race between “The Human Revolution” and “The Twenty-One Balloons”, of which the former won out but only by that much. Last week's winner “Bionicle” fell much harder than its competitors, in part because of poor word of mouth. Meanwhile it was business as usual for everything else, save for the two romance-based films plunging like rocks as one would expect them to do after Valentine’s. “ReBoot” also became the first film of the year to make the top 10 while grossing under one million dollars.
