DreamWorks Animation has added two more feature toons to their 2021 slate, an Untitled Spirit Riding Free movie based on its Netflix series on May 14...

Spirit Riding Free‘s origins goes back to the 2002 Oscar-nominated movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron ($122.5M global box office). In 2017, that feature was reimagined by DreamWorks Animation Television as a Netflix original series, Spirit Riding Free, thus igniting interest in the IP among a whole new generation of young girls.

Pic will follow headstrong Lucky Prescott, who is forced to move from her big city home to a small frontier town, where she’s a complete fish-out-of-water.  But her life is changed forever when she makes new friends and forms an inseparable bond with a wild mustang named Spirit.  When Spirit’s herd is captured by rustlers, the girls and their horses must undertake the adventure of a lifetime to save them.

Elaine Bogan will direct (director, Tales of Arcadia: Trollhunters and 3 Below, Dragons: Race to the Edge) and Karen Foster will produce (co-producer, How To Train Your Dragon). Ennio Torresan (head of story, Abominable and The Boss Baby) will serve as co-director.

Spirit Riding Free will be made with a lower-cost production model, similar to what DWA used for the production of 2017’s Captain Underpants ($38M production cost, $125.5M WW box office), thus working creatively with a partner studio.

In fact, most major studios haven’t paused animation productions during COVID-19, with pics like Spin Master’s Paw Patrol: The Movie (due out August 20, 2021), Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon and Pixar’s Soul, DWA’s Croods 2, The Boss Baby 2, The Bad Guys and Spirit Riding Free continuing to be in full operation with artists and filmmakers working remotely.

As far as positives go, I think it's very well animated. The color shading is vivid. It seems like there's a lot of heart at the center of the film. I get the sense that the person who wrote the script actually cared about it...

Oh, and the voice acting's great, too.

It's from the writer of the actual series so that's a plus. Had it on as background noise while doing house work a few years back, it was cute. The film looks to adapt the first season's events.

There's a legitimately creepy episode where the characters go into something like an abandoned orphanage that's overrun with wolves.

Nuh-uh. Noooooo way. This looks like trash. I will watch the original a million more times thank you very much.

Maybe what you need to see the movie's good qualities is the power of a thousand marshmallows! 😂
