UNITED STATES / CANADA  3D BOX OFFICE REVENUES

2008 : $0.2B

2009 : $1.1B

2010 : $2.2B

2011 : $1.8B

2012 : $1.8B

2013 : $1.8B

The 3D Box Office got a glorious year in 2010, the after-effect of Avatar, but after that it was stagnation, and a decreasing share of the BO as a whole.

In the developed world (North America, Europe, Japan) 3D is increasingly rejected, it was a short fad. However 3D is still growing in Latin America, Russia and Asia.

I thought 3D was going to drop hard after 2011... here in Spain some theatres don't charge more for a 3D movie...

€8€10 for 3D

More or less the same. I thought France was more expensive than Spain... well, maybe it's just ParisBack to the thread, next Thursday Lucy and Into The Storm open in Brazil. Which movie do you think will win? I am surprised to see Into the Storm beating Lucy in Peru and Chile. I am planning to see Lucy tomorrow, it's going to rule here in Spain this weekend, a lot of people I talked want to see it.

It is.

In this moment I live in a remote, rural area in France at my parents' home, and we have a small town (50,000 inhabitants) with a big cinema but it's almost the only one in the area, given the standard of living and salaries are not the same than in France's bigger cities and even Paris our prices are relatively affordable.

When I'm a student in the city of Reims (180,000 inhabitants) it's around €10 for 2D movies -_- I don't want to know how it is in Paris ^^"

I would bet on Lucy, superheroes movies are more successful in Brazil than in South America overall, they clearly like this kind of stuff.

I spend most of my time in a city to study but when I come back here I'm glad, with this calm, nature, animals (sheep, ducks, cows), forests, it's invigorating :D

I couldn't live in a big city, just temporarily because it's fun to discover a new place but not beyond 2 years.

3D also dropped in South Korea. For example, even with competition cutting out its legs, HTTYD2 gross will ONLY end up behind HTTYD1's because of drastically reduced 3D business. It beats it in admissions handily, but most of those admissions were for 2D. (And if HTTYD2 had the amount of domestic 3D sales that HTTYD1 did, it'd probably have ended up with a total closer The Croods' $187M...)I'd love to see some Dragon 1 vs. Dragon 2 comparisons for other countries that have both gross and admissions data for both movies - in the HTTYD2 OS thread, of course.

Sad for Dragon 2.

The gross difference isn't really THAT bad - last weekend it was up to $22.6M (not sure how much it gained this Mon-Fri) down from $25.1m, while admissions are up from 2,603,857 to (currently) 2,965,790. That's almost a 14% admissions increase - would be more like $28.6M?I'm continuing this in Dragon 2's OS thread. Edited by TServo2049

Interesting top don't you think? Thanks to Screen Digest we have some insight, and these numbers match Henry's ones ;)

What can we expect in the next few years?

-Well, Mexico and Brazil will pass Australia and Germany.Mexico seems to have a faster growth than Brazil as a market, which reflects the economic health of those countries with a slow-growing Brazil and a dynamic Mexican, it's interesting to see Mexico is a bit ahead in size given their population : 118m in Mexico and 201m in Brazil...However that doesn't mean Brazil won't grow : with a growth around 10% a year it's a healthy and promising market, enough to pass France, UK and Russia on the long run.

-Russia is a different animal : the market growth clearly slowed this year in dollars, that could reflect its stagnant economy, and a recession is likely with already ominous stats : fall of 23% of car sales in July 2014 over July 2013 for example. And demographics are not helping at all. Let's hope it will be able to grow in the near future, there is potential to compete with France and the UK at a minimum.

-Switzerland, Sweden and Taiwan will probably get out this top in a few years, giving way to rising and promising markets such as Indonesia, Colombia and Venezuela.

-Turkey is a pretty unknown market, we don't know much about it, but it could be able to pass Spain and Italy in a few years, at some point it will become a sizable market.
