Purple Minion

Mexico Box Office | Planet of the Apes is king with $6.4M OW; good holds for Garfield and Challengers

Recommended Posts

Weekend numbers. Conjuring 2 this close to 300M lc, I think it's the highest grossing horror movie in pesos.  Warcraft opened OK, but doubt it'll reach $10M. X-M:A is 2M lc away from breaking into the all-time Top 40 in lc. Alice2 still 50% behind AIW.

Next releases that should hit #1: ID2, IA5 and then it's all about FD. The animated animals may pervent Tarzan and NYSM2 from making it to the top.

ID2 opens to a decent 17.3M lc OD Thu (~$900K). Usual multiplier for these movies is 7-8x, so we could expect a 4-day OW of about $6.5M.

Me Before You had a good 10.6M lc OD (~$550K). Using a slightly lower multiplier, it should aim to the $3.3M mark for the whole OW.

Conjuring 2 total is 323.5M lc, $17.7M. Already in the all-time Top 50 in lc.

Full weekly table coming soon.

Can Conjuring get to $25M?

Posted this in the Dory thread in mid-June.

Based on MU numbers, FD should sell at least 10M tickets in Mexico and gross 500M lc ($27M). But if it's really well received and doesn't lose many seats after its 3rd week, it could challenge Minions as the #1 movie in admissions (16M).

The most likely scenario is somewhere in the middle, about 13M tickets and 675M lc ($35M). The ER is going berserk these days, so your guess on US total is as good as mine!

Great weekday holds for ID2 ($9.35M total) and Me Before You ($5.8M total), probably the highest grossing YA movie in a while. Conjuring 2 getting closer and closer to $20M, it's now #33 all time (lc). X-M:A is on its way out but managed to land at #40 all time (lc).

This weekend is all about Scrat and Sid, two of the most popular animated characters in this market. How high IA5 could go? Well, let's check the gross of the previous 2:

09  618,218,437  Ice Age 4 (2012) --> 3rd biggest animated movie ever.

15  539,541,637  Ice Age 3 (2009)

Both with more than 11 million tickets sold.  So with holiday vacations in full force, 550M should be feasible ... although it only has 2 full weeks before Dory shows up to mess everything.

It could indeed. These are the figures in USD, as per Mojo:

IA4

OW: $11,462,936, Total $46,845,581

IA3

OW: $9,162,498, Total $39,389,248

Movies weren't so front-loaded back then so we could expect a massive OW for IA5.

---

Central Intelligence also opened today, but it's not getting many screens in average (5) compared with IA5 (18), as per Cinepolis.

That will be interesting to see, however Dory is likely to undermine it.

Weekend estimates (Screendaily, Deadline):

  • IA5 #1 with $8.7M, second biggest Fox opening.  Lower numbers in USD than IA4 and IA3; but just -4% in lc from the previous one. Awaiting for the final lc numbers  tomorrow for further comparisons.
  • ID2 #2, OK $2.1M weekend for a $11.5M. Its third largest international market.
  • Central Intelligence #4 with $1.5M OW.

Wonder if Me Before You is #3?
