PHILIPPINES BOX OFFICE thread | INSIDE OUT II breaks records. Only the last two AVENGERS movies opened bigger on opening day. But can it beat FROZEN II's total?

Broke FROZEN II's opening record, but again, I think it's total is safe. But this is an absolute win for Pixar here. Its movies have never been historically big here.

I told you FROZEN II would be safe. But let's see. I think there's still a 50% chance.

Though it suffered a harsh drop, INSIDE OUT II's second weekend gross in the Philippines is still bigger than the movie's total so far in a number of South and SE Asian markets.

10.89M Philippines (total after 2nd weekend)

3.68M Indonesia (total after 2nd weekend)
2.75M Singapore (total after 2nd weekend)

2.60M Philippines (second weekend)
2.38M Thailand (total after 2nd weekend)
2.25M India (total after 2nd weekend)
2.09M Malaysia (total after 2nd weekend)
1.96M Vietnam (total after 2nd weekend)

Deadline is now saying INSIDE OUT II is now the #5 all time biggest movie in the country. That means it has beaten THE AVENGERS. I wonder if that's in local currency or in USD.

July 3:

Despicable Me 4 - ₱9.7 million

Kuman Thong - ₱0.5 million

Yeahh likely local currency and they're also not counting the supposed global total of Hello Love Goodbye (THR reported $17M) .

Exchange rates will really widen the gap between Inside Out 2 ($1 = around PHP58) and Frozen 2 ($1 = around PHP51) .

I think the even insane part is people in Philippines have to pay will over 300 peso for IO2. That is $5.3 when Malaysian only paid $3.6 in average. Sorry to say this I strongly doubt Philippines are richer than Malaysia in general. No wonder movie collapse after their OW here. The ticket price is so unreasonable for general public.

Yes, it is super expensive and the income gap between rich vs. poor could arguably be widening BUT there is still a demo willing to pay for a theatrical experience and watch them show up again for Deadpool & Wolverine. As shown by our top grossing films of all time, they are really into superheroes, Disney, & A-list local actors/love-teams. They are really not just into Dune or Furiosa (even Oppenheimer - and that one made good money actually here) and the local films released on 1st half of the year weren't Filipinos' taste.

Aside from some exceptions, Philippines tend to be really frontloaded - particularly on films which are fan-heavy or super buzzy right from the start. It's also more of Inside Out 2 burning off demand quickly from opening on a Holiday and an extended opening weekend due to Monday being a holiday. And it's actually dropping better than the first here which dropped hard too on 2nd/3rd week.

And P325 is just the minimum. Several malls even ask for P400+ for a regular 2D ticket. IMAX is P750 - P1000. LOL

Have just seen DESPICABLE ME IV. There were just 8 of us in the cinema. A huge contrast to the sold-out cinema I was in with INSIDE OUT II.

I guess this would be my final tracking for this. Inside Out 2 comp would give it a ₱94.6M ($1.6M) opening day gross which is insane. IMAX sales remain stronger. . We have to note though that this could be more frontloaded as a fan-driven film and IO2 was boosted by the Holiday. Did a quick scan on regional malls and sales are showing up but not yet as strong as IO2. On the other hand, the opening weekend could make up for the gap between DP3 & IO2

For reference, Deadpool 2 made $5.3M here back in 2019 while Logan did $3.9M back in 2017. Would be glad if this really opens big too. Some advance screenings will happen on July 23rd. Next to track is local film Un/Happy For You.
