peludo
Portugal and Spain didn't reacted to Iron Man 3 in the same way the rest of the world did. Well, that opening is a 81% higher than IM1 and a 46% higher than IM2. And remember that the rest of the world has not a 27% of unemployment and about a 55% of unemployment of young people, obviously the biggest market for this film. CJohn
Here IM3 was probably 20% higher than IM2. IM3 had a holiday on Thursday OD. IM2 had nothing. It should end with about the same as IM2/Captain America and far away from Avengers. Edited April 28, 2013 by CJohn
Jandrew
So Iron Man 3 did solid here, but not "biggest" business?
peludo
So Iron Man 3 did solid here, but not "biggest" business? Indeed. As I said in a previous post here, previous Iron Man movies were not very big. To put into perspective, IM grossed 12 million which is equivalent to 150 million in US, and IM2 grossed 8 million, which is equivalent to 100 million in US. 5 million $ opening is about 62 million opening. With a normal WOM, it should reach at least the first part and even go over it and become the biggest Iron Man movie (excepting Avengers). It should land somewhere 12-15 million. peludo
Is it the same country that gave Avatar $110mn No, it is not the same country. It is called in the same way, but that is all. It is, economically, a destroyed country. There are 2.3 million people more unemployed than in the begining of 2010 (when Avatar was at theaters). Sometimes you can get a good surprise like with The Impossible last year, but those moments are becoming more and more rare. And quite higher average ticket prices (it is about 7.2 € = 9.3 $) does not help. 10 years ago we were selling, proportionally to population, about the same number of tickets than France (a peak of 143 million in 2004). This year is probable that we will not reach 90 million. And we must remember that a 55% of young people, who should devour movies like Iron Man 3, are unemployed. CJohn
Considering The Hangover 2 opened with 1.81M€, that is actually quite good for TH3. Besides the top 2, the box office is just scary in Spain.
