Back in its day, that was an event movie. By now, the buddy-cop-comedy/thriller is a tired genre, and it wasn't new in '84 when it came out, but this film walks the fine line between comedy, thriller and action with quick steps and never overstays its welcome. The AxelFoley/Rosewood/Taggart triangle works perfectly, it's full of wit and really funny gags, and Eddie Murphy has perfect timing. Plus, it's got a slimy asshole as the main villain with some character faces as his suits, it's got a soundtrack that maybe doesn't stand the test of time but gives a little extra drive and basically does its job, and some fun stabs at Beverly Hills and LA. The only weak point afaik was the girl (Lisa Eilbacher, had to look her up) who never stands a chance against the hard-acting men here, she was just some eye-candy. But since her role was small anyway and there's no romantic interest in this film (if you don't consider the Foley/Rosewood banter) that doesn't hurt much. So, A from me!

Lots of fun! Great soundtrack! Eddie Murphy back when he was funny, the action scenes are well shot and Eddie Murphy is great as the lead. Also, the villains were pretty good too which is what is supposed to work, and I enjoyed John Ashton and Judge Reinhold(what happened to him?) grade:B+
