Jack Nevada
I have to give huge props to Xavier Dolan. This guy got his directorial debut into the official selection at Cannes.. when he was 19 years old. At 21 he acted as the director, writer, producer, editor, costume designer and one of the main characters in the film Heartbeats. I think its fair to say that both words wunderkind and auteur would be apt descriptions. Now, Heartbeats isn't anything you've never seen before. Its is slight, and the story is beyond cliched. But it is an assured film. There aren't any falsities or touches of pretentiousness that you'd might expect from a young director. Mr. Dolan is obviously good at working with actors. The film really has only three characters played by Monia Chokri, Niels Schneider and Dolan himself, and they're all good, though Dolan is the best by sizable margin. 3,5/
