Very good for Inside Out. Mediocre for MI5. Atrocious for F4.

Good increase for To the Fore. Ok for Doraemon.

Thursday schedules

Broadway/AMC

The ONE
New Holdovers Leaving
Attack on Titan - 15 showings Fantastic Four - 5 showings (▼ 10) Minions (Eng.)
Paper Towns - 2 showings To the Fore - 2 showings (▼ 4)
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - 3 showings Vacation - 1 showing (▼ 4)
  Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - 6 showings (▼ 8)
  Inside Out (Can.) - 3 showings (=)
  Inside Out (Eng.) - 5 showings (=)
  Ant-Man - 1 showing (▼ 3)
  Monster Hunt - 2 showings (▼ 3)

Attack on Titan will either get 2 screens all day or 2 screens at night since EDKO is the distributor for this movie and owns the Broadway/AMC theater chains. It also gets the biggest screen over Inside Out. Pre-sales are running slightly behind Inside Out. Paper Towns/Man From U.N.C.L.E. will both be shown in 8 theaters from these 2 theater chains combined but UNCLE gets the edge over Paper Towns in showings with 3-4.

Inside Out retains all or almost all of its showtimes and is left with the 2nd biggest screen over Fantastic Four/Mission Impossible 5. It is winning in pre-sales at most Broadway/AMC locations but Attack on Titan will have the advantage of filling up the bigger screens with walk-ins.

Fantastic Four/Mission Impossible 5 are moved to the 3rd/4th biggest screen and theaters are split as to who gets the 3rd biggest screen. Pre-sales show Mission Impossible 5 is well out in front of Fantastic Four.

To the Fore gets bumped down to 2 showtimes while Doraemon gets 3. Ant-Man gets another week at most theaters while Minions is axed at 60% of remaining locations.

UA is a completely different story as none of the holdovers are getting full day showtimes. Instead theaters will run with a 1-2 of To the Fore (UA film) and Fantastic Four. Attack on Titan gets 3 showtimes here while UNCLE has a slight advantage with 4 showtimes overall. Paper Towns will only get 2 showings.

To the Fore gets full day showtimes while Fantastic Four will get the biggest screen at most theaters along with full day showtimes. Mission Impossible 5 will see its showtime count slashed in half while Inside Out gets 3 or 4 showtimes.

Thomas & Friends gets a couple of theaters with 2 or 3 showtimes.

MCL

Attack on Titan gets 5 showings while Man from UNCLE gets big support from this theater chain with 5 showings a day. Thomas & Friends will be shown in 5 MCL theaters with an average of 2 showings a day. Mission Impossible will retain the biggest screen at most locations with full day showtimes. Inside Out gets the biggest screen where MI5 is not getting it and is getting an average of 5 showings.

Newport

Attack on Titan will start off with full day showings at every theater here. To the Fore/Mission Impossible 5 gets massively downgraded. Inside Out gets upgraded with 1 theater even coming back to the fold.

After removing the blocked off seats from all showtimes, Inside Out has a 2:1 advantage over Attack on Titan on Thursday on its 4th week in release. At night, IO has a 3:1 advantage at most locations over Attack on Titan. This does not mean that IO will win this weekend. Many films have seen brutal walk-ins and overtaken the pre-sales leader. If Attack on Titan does not see sales rise quickly, Inside Out might snatch the biggest screen away from AoT on Saturday/Sunday.

Bland for Attack on Titan despite having all theaters including IMAX to prop it up. Inside Out is weakening albeit a very slow pace. MI5 did not have a great hold, nor did Doraemon. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. opened very softly. Fantastic Four collapsed. It'll be interesting to watch its holds this week. To the Fore snuck out a good hold. Awful for Paper Towns. Meh for Ant-Man and Minions.

Attack on Titan wins opening day but Inside Out will handily take care of it this weekend. WOM is really bad for this Japanese anime film adaptation. The popular manga film adaptation is getting creamed on social media with a score of just 2.9/5, worse than Fantastic Four's score right now. It will be a repeat of last weekend when Fantastic Four fell flat after opening day and that opened up Mission Impossible 5 to take the weekend. I expect the same thing will happen this weekend except Inside Out will finally be the champ for the first time on its 4th weekend.

Inside Out had another stellar hold. By the end of this weekend, it will have passed 6m.

Another average hold for Mission Impossible 5. Outside of Inside Out and Ant-Man's 2nd weekend, this summer has seen pretty mediocre holds from Hollywood films.

Fantastic Four had the 2nd Thursday we all pretty much expected. It faltered and just barely beat out Man From U.N.C.L.E. for #4.

Weak opening for UNCLE. The marketplace for action/spy films has been saturated with MI5, Ant-Man, FF all released in the past 4 weeks. Opening day reaction is at a decent 4/5.

To the Fore held very well. The racing flick is getting some great reviews.

Paper Towns opened poorly. This is getting very good reviews though with a 4.4 rating from users.

Not bad for Doraemon. Its hold was pretty good considering the usual Doraemon opening day rush factor.

Excellent for Inside Out. Today might be the day that it is finally #1 on a weekend weekday. Awful for Attack on Titan. I'm curious to see if Mission Impossible 5 will pass it this weekend. MI5 had a superb increase but also a crappy hold from last Friday. It needs to hold better if it wants to pass 7m. Not good for UNCLE. Disastrous for F4. Great for To the Fore. Good stuff from Doraemon. Still bland for Paper Towns.

6/12 Broadway/AMC theaters have stuck by Attack on Titan this weekend and given it the most seats available/biggest screen while the other half have gone rogue and pushed Inside Out ahead with the most seats available/biggest screen. For example, even though it seems like Titan is getting an expansion at Festival Walk, it's actually being downgraded because Inside Out has taken the biggest screen away from it while it is on the 2nd/3rd biggest screen which combined has less seats available than just the biggest screen.

Another interesting case is Palace APM where on Saturday, Titan will share the biggest screen with Inside Out but on Sunday, they have given the biggest screen to Inside Out.

UA Cine Moko has Titan in IMAX with 3 showings but besides those IMAX showtimes, it won't be on the biggest screen.

The GRAND and GH theaters are well in favor of Inside Out over Attack on Titan this weekend.

Thursday estimates

1. Attack on Titan - $298,684 (including sneak previews, Thursday estimate)

2. Inside Out - $129,863 (Thursday estimate)/$5,584,110

3. Mission Impossible 5 - $5,194,521

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - $51,945 (Thursday estimate)

To the Fore - pass $649,315 by Friday

Fantastic Four - $1,298,630

Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes - over $389,589

Paper Towns - $30,517 (Thursday estimate)

Ant-Man - $6,389,261

Thomas & Friends - $5,194 (Thursday estimate)

Though Titan has a leg up on IO this weekend due to previews, IO should be able to overcome this on Saturday/Sunday. Mission Impossible 5 will beat Ghost Protocol by either Monday or Tuesday. Not good for UNCLE. Good for To the Fore after last weekend's soft start. Catastrophe for Fantastic Four. Meh for Paper Towns. Poor for Thomas and Friends.

Awesome for Inside Out. It will be smooth sailing from here on out for IO until next weekend when another action spy movie and a live action-animation movie threaten its spot at #1. No surprise that Titan decreased from opening day. The opening day rush factor coupled with the horrific reviews spelled disaster. Still not a good hold for MI5 but at least it is catching up to Titan. At this moment, MI5 will beat Titan for #2 without Titan's previews but including them into Titan's opening weekend makes deciding who will be #2 or #3 a bit trickier. Let's see how Titan does today first. The fight for #4 is going to come down to the wire. Obviously Fantastic Four is wilting quickly but UNCLE is not doing that well either. Meanwhile, To the Fore could actually beat out both for #4 if its word of mouth propels Saturday/Sunday over them while the other 2 lag behind. Not good for Paper Towns. Solid hold for Doraemon. Awful hold for Ant-Man. Weak for Minions.

Good increases for Inside Out/Mission Impossible 5. I think Inside Out will either stay flat or increase from last week today. Poor for Attack on Titan. Good for To the Fore. Bleh for UNCLE. Decent for Doraemon. Abysmal for Fantastic Four. It would be a major feat if it missed out on the top 5 in its 2nd weekend after opening at #2 with more than 1m.

Almost all of the holdovers saw better holds today than on Friday. Ant-Man held a whopping 20% better week-to-week on Saturday than on Friday and Minions had one of its best weekend holds of its run so far. Back at the top, Inside Out eased just 4% from last Saturday. Pre-sales are starting to take a hit but huge walk-ins suggest that many are willing to see this over other films. At #2, Mission Impossible 5 held well and toughed it out against Titan. It will extend its lead over Titan on Sunday. Titan fell to #3 amid poor reception and a niche audience. It did not even hit 20,000 admissions from a 13,500 opening on Thursday. The Man From UNCLE won a close battle for #4 against Fantastic Four. Reception seems to be decent. Meanwhile, Fantastic Four was looking awful during the afternoon sinking as low as #7 before revving back up to #5. To the Fore was in the top 4 for a moment but did not have enough showings to stay there for the whole day. Great hold. Excellent for Doraemon. It has gone from over 50% drop on Thursday to less than 30% today. Pretty weak for Paper Towns.

3 Attack on Titan $605,000 +414.0% $765,000
4 The Man From U.N.C.L.E. $308,000   $308,000
5 Fantastic Four $305,000 -71.0% $1,540,000

With Attack on Titan flailing and no other big movies coming out, Inside Out relished the opportunity and slid into #1 on its 4th weekend. It has passed 6m and is already #4 on the animation list behind Toy Story 3, Minions and Monsters University. By next weekend, this will pass 7m and if it can survive the next 2 weeks, there will be a holiday at the beginning of September where it has the chance to earn more money.

Mission Impossible 5 took 2nd away from Attack on Titan and in the process overtook Mission Impossible 4 as the biggest film in the franchise. It will approach 6m by Wednesday or Thursday and if it gets past Hitman, it will hit 7m.

Attack on Titan stormed out of the gate and went for broke on Thursday but as reviews came pouring in, it killed its chances of #1 this weekend. Broadway/AMC really went all out by putting this on 2 screens but as Friday pre-sales came in, they knew they had to upgrade Inside Out or lose money. Altogether it will open at #2 including previews but its true Thursday-Sunday opener will come in at #3.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. did not make a big dent this weekend. Many theaters could not ignore Inside Out's previous weekends and Mission Impossible 5 is still playing fairly well. It opened at a bad time and would have done more with a different date. There simply was too many action/spy films in the past few weeks: Ant-Man, MI5, Fantastic Four all took potential admissions away from UNCLE along with Inside Out.

Fantastic Four barely scraped it together to stay in the top 5 but it will lose more than 70% this weekend. With Hitman coming out next weekend, 2m is looking bleak.

Inside Out joined the top 5 highest grossing animated films of all time earlier this week and has surpassed Stand By Me Doraemon for #4. What looked impossible just 3 weeks ago has become a reality and it now has a slim chance of even catching both Monsters University and Minions. It will attain a 4 multiplier when it breaks through 7m next week. 8m is a lock even with Pixels out next week and 9m is looking doable at this point. It would be incredible if this catches Minions despite a handicap of nearly 3:1 on opening weekend alone. After all, it already had to deal with scheduling politics from the top 3 theater chains and passed all of their films with ease in just a few short weeks.

Inside Out was not the only one hitting milestones as Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation nudged past Ghost Protocol for highest grossing Mission Impossible film in the series this weekend. 7m is still in the works depending on how it does against Hitman this weekend. It cannot have another hold in the 50's if it wants to make 7m. 6m will happen by Thursday.

There were some big cheers but ultimately it ended in depressing fashion for Attack on Titan. Thursday was spent celebrating its #1 opening but it fell to #3 on Saturday/Sunday causing it to lose the weekend against Inside Out.

#4 was up for grabs and by Sunday we were no closer to finding out who actually took it as Fantastic Four increased in admissions while The Man From U.N.C.L.E. declined. UNCLE has a slight edge with 800+ more admissions than F4 but we'll have to wait until actuals come out.

Much better for Inside Out today after Monday's slight hiccup. The fight for #2 continued into Tuesday and this time Attack on Titan beat out MI5 for the runner up position. Decent increases for UNCLE and To the Fore.

Thursday schedules

Broadway/AMC

  Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - 4 showings (▼ 7)
  Inside Out (Can.) - 8 showings (=)
  Ant-Man - 1 showing (=)
  Monster Hunt - 1 showing (▼ 2)

There's no consensus on who is actually the leader of the openers this week. Some have given Wild City the biggest screen/most showtimes, others have given Hitman: Agent 47 the most showtimes and still others have dumped Pixels with more showings than any other opener. Pre-sales have Hitman and Pixels battling it out with each other with Wild City struggling. While We're Young/C'est Si Bon are getting play in less than half of the theaters in this theater chain.

Inside Out is getting the biggest screen at a handful of locations including Palace APM. That is considered to be a major victory bearing in mind it is in its 5th weekend. Some theaters are retaining all or almost all of its Wednesday showtimes while the others are reducing it to 3-4 showtimes. Even art-house theater Cinematheque is still showing this. Usually by now, they would have dumped this for another indie movie. Pre-sales remain high at its strongholds with a 5:1 advantage over Pixels, 10:1 over Wild City and 20:1 over Hitman: Agent 47 at one theater on Friday night.

Mission Impossible 5 gets cut in half while Fantastic Four is a major loser down to just 1 showing on Thursday, a loss of 80%. Other major losers include The Man From UNCLE which is surprisingly gone at Palace APM and To the Fore. Paper Towns has split the theater chain: one group has decided to give it 1 showing, the other has it on 3-4 showings. Doraemon will still get an average of 2 showings on Thursday. Attack on Titan remains on full day showtimes but at a much smaller screen.

UA

Windsor Cinema
New Holdovers Leaving
Wild City - 4 showings Attack on Titan - 1 showing (▼ 3) Fantastic Four

C'est Si Bon - 3 showings Inside Out (3D Can.) - 1 showing (=)
  Inside Out (Eng.) - 1 showing (=)

Wild City is the clear winner at UA with the biggest screen at almost all locations. Hitman: Agent 47 is 2nd while Pixels is munching up the screen count in 3rd.

Inside Out gets cut down to 3-4 showings while Mission Impossible 5 is hacked down to 2 showings. Fantastic Four sees theaters wave goodbye or crush it with only 1 showing. Attack on Titan gets halved to about 2 showings. To the Fore will be shown 2-3 times per day. The Man from UNCLE silences with 4 showings. Paper Towns is down to 1 showing.

MCL

STAR Cinema
New Holdovers Leaving
Wild City - 5 showings Attack on Titan - 2 showings (▼ 6) Vacation
Pixels - 5 showings Paper Towns - 1 showing (▼ 4) Love Live! The School Idol Movie
Hitman: Agent 47 - 6 showings The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - 3 showings (▼ 5)
While We're Young - 5 showings Thomas & Friends: Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure - 1 showing (▼ 3)
C'est Si Bon - 3 showings Fantastic Four - 1 showing (▼ 5)
Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes - 2 showings (▼ 3)
  To the Fore - 1 showing (▼ 3)
  Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - 3 showings (▼ 5)
  Inside Out (Can.) - 5 showings (▲ 4)

Theaters are split here as to who is given the biggest screen. It looks like Hitman has been given the edge with Wild City in 2nd and Pixels in 3rd.

All 5 smaller MCL theaters have either given Inside Out more showings or the biggest screen. The GRAND remains a big supporter of Inside Out with 9 showings on Thursday. MCL is still promoting MI5 with about 4 showings. UNCLE remains in theaters with 3 showings while Fantastic Four is driven down to 1 showing or leaves theaters. Attack on Titan sees its showtimes halved.

Wow, Minions has a chance of passing 11m in H/K? Great number.

No chance. The-Numbers has been known to grossly inflate movies' total grosses. This is another case. Minions passed 10m last Sunday. There's no way this made $800,000 in 1 week. Its final gross should be somewhere in the 10.2-10.3m area.

Incredible walk-ins for Hitman. It accounted for 89% of opening day admissions but in gross it will be much closer. Pixels has IMAX + 3D and that will narrow the gap by a bit and Inside Out also has 3D showings scattered about. In gross, it will probably be Pixels #1, Hitman a close 2nd, Inside Out #3. Opening day user scores have come in and Pixels stands at a very good 4.4/5 (nooooo!) and Hitman begins with a 4.1. The reasons why both are scoring well with viewers despite scathing critic reviews are that Hitman is an action movie and action films generally score very well here while Pixels has the small-big effect. Take Gulliver's Travels, for example. It was panned in North America but it was a huge hit in HK grossing 4m. HK has some affinity for these types of films and combine that with the 80's video game nostalgia and you've got a nice recipe for success.

Very good hold for Inside Out despite direct competition. Wild City experienced a similar explosion in walk-ins like Hitman. Not a bad hold for MI5. Terrible for Attack on Titan. Another solid hold for To the Fore. Mediocre holds for UNCLE, Paper Towns and Doraemon.

In 11th place....

Not great for Hitman or Pixels. Inside Out came back and is right behind Pixels for #2 in admissions. It is currently about $40,000 behind Hitman and $60,000 behind Pixels for bragging rights this weekend, which it can make up on Saturday and Sunday. Weak increase for Wild City. None of the openers are increasing dramatically this weekend. Pretty big decline for Mission Impossible 5. Disaster for Attack on Titan.

Saturday adm. (so far)     August 22
Rank Movie LW TW WKD % chg QD % chg
1 Pixels -- 7,621 -- +41.2%
2 Inside Out 13,060 7,481 -42.7% +82.1%
3 Hitman: Agent 47 -- 4,757 -- +62.5%
4 Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation 7,314 3,153 -56.9% +84.2%
5 Wild City -- 3,119 -- +59.4%
6 The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 3,045 1,678 -44.9% +81.6%
7 To the Fore 3,098 1,566 -49.5% +52.9%
8 Attack on Titan 6,874 1,543 -77.6% +22.6%
9 Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes 2,746 1,231 -55.2% +130.5%
10 Paper Towns 1,300 824 -36.6% +22.8%

So Inside Out has pretty much caught up to Pixels in pre-sales. Despite some theaters switching Pixels to 2D this weekend, it has not really shown that same walk-in explosion that Hitman has done on Thursday/Friday. It should come in 3rd today in admissions. Inside Out will win Saturday/Sunday in admissions but will it be enough to catch Pixels in gross? I expect IO to come in with 21,000 admissions for the day. Not good for MI5. Weak for Wild City.

Hitman and Pixels both did what I expected. Inside Out fell short of expectations and is losing steam.

Fantastic Four 9,560 602 -93.7%

94% erosion for Fantastic Four. Maybe it leaves theaters after just 3 weeks?

Good increase for Inside Out. Mild increase for Pixels. Solid for Hitman.

  Weekend Projections     August 20
Rank Movie TW % chg Total
1 Pixels $634,500   $634,500
2 Hitman: Agent 47 $585,000   $585,000
3 Inside Out $580,000 -35.6% $7,294,000
4 Wild City $315,000   $315,000
5 Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation $300,000 -54.3% $6,697,000

Good opening for Pixels. Buoyed by IMAX and 3D prices, Pixels has managed to become Adam Sandler's best opener ever together with his first top 3 finish since Grown Ups in 2010 and his first #1 in 7 years since You Don't Mess With the Zohan. Sandler's last movie to gross over $500,000 in HK was 7 years ago with Bedtime Stories. His most recent films that were released in HK did not even cross $300,000 on opening weekend.

Hitman posted a solid number even though it's the end of summer. It might be flopping stateside but in HK, it performed quite well especially given the amount of action films released in the past 6 weeks. The HK trailer made it seem like there was going to be lots of action and the action crowd turned up. Rotten reviews from critics are not the case here as most audiences are enjoying the film.

What could have been a very disastrous weekend for the openers turned out not to be the case and that impacted Inside Out's 5th weekend. Pixels has been posting solid numbers across Asia and it hampered IO's staying power this weekend. Although it will win Sunday, it won't be enough to catch Pixels but it might be able to slide into 2nd if Hitman falls hard or if it has a resurgence in admissions on Sunday. Whether it passes 8m by next weekend or not, 8m will for sure happen because there will be a holiday on September 3. If it can hold on well next week, it will pull off a very strong holiday performance which would send it beyond 8m. 9 films will come out next week and then 8 more on September 3 but none of them will target IO's audience directly.

Wild City was the only local language film to open and it was nowhere to be seen. It might have suffered at the hands of To the Fore which opened poorly but has recovered due to strong word of mouth.

Mission Impossible 5 edges closer to 7m which will happen by the following Wednesday after next. Overall, its performance has been pretty good.
