Thursday actual

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials - HK$2,574,528 (US$332,717)

Fox HK reports that Maze Runner 2 opened 50% higher than the first Maze Runner and that it is the highest grossing opening day for a foreign film in September. With that number, 2m should be happening this weekend.

Saturday schedules

Maze Runner 2 is getting upgraded to 3 or 4 screens. Palace APM will show this 23 times on Saturday while an independent theater will give this 37 showings on Saturday.

Everest will get special sneaks this weekend.

Last week's winner, No Escape, will be getting a mixed bag this weekend. Some will upgrade while some will downgrade.

Love Detective will add showtimes this weekend while Inside Out is all over the place this weekend. UA will cut it while Broadway/AMC will go full throttle. One theater is even scheduling Inside Out with 5 showtimes this weekend.

Note: The reported opening day for Maze Runner 2 was under by nearly $300,000 HK so I used the figure reported by FOX HK instead.

In a nutshell: Great for Maze Runner 2 and PK. Pretty bad for everything else.

Saturday schedules update

PK gains an extra theater in Citygate this weekend. Maze Runner 2 has its showtime count increased by the showtimes that were held back.

Excellent for Maze Runner 2. Mediocre hold for No Escape. Very slow for Everest. Ok hold for Love Detective. Incredible for PK. Not good for All You Need is Love or Boychoir. Bad holds for Three Cities, Pixels and Inside Out.

Superb increase for Maze Runner 2. Weak for Everest. This is not good news for next weekend. Outstanding for PK. This will increase from last weekend. Meh for No Escape. Average for Love Detective. All You Need is Love had an OK increase. Not a good hold for Inside Out but it does have the distinction of having the best increase of the top 10 with a 300% push.

Saturday admissions will not be posted due to wmoov being down for the morning and most of the afternoon. Currently, Maze Runner 2 stands at just 38,000 admissions at 5 PM when it should be over 50,000. All the holdovers except PK are down significantly from last weekend which should not be the case.

4 Everest $135,000   $135,000
5 PK $133,000 +7.8% $323,000

Note: Due to the complexity of this week, estimates may vary greatly from projections.

Maze Runner 2 claims biggest September opening weekend ever. It also is the first film to make over 2m OW in September. No Escape/Love Detective had bad 2nd weekend holds. Everest had very slow sales this weekend. Incredible for PK to rise on its 2nd weekend with huge competition and the holiday last weekend.

Outstanding for Maze Runner 2. Big drop for No Escape even with gigantic competition. Everest sneaks did not do great. Impressive for PK. Love Detective did OK. Not bad for Inside Out despite losing theaters or some theaters reducing showtimes on Sunday.

2 No Escape $257,000 -67.2% $1,302,000

4 Everest $145,000   $145,000
5 Love Detective $130,000 -59.0% $555,000

Maze Runner 2 has the biggest September weekend on record and is likely the only film to make 2m on OW in September pending actuals. No Escape got crushed by Maze Runner 2. Of course, no holidays this weekend did not help either. It's still a very good total though considering it has only banked 24m in 3 weeks domestically. #3 and #4 will be very close but the nod was given to PK who rose from opening weekend. PK added 2 theaters this week, one on Thursday and one on Saturday so the potential is there for the rest of the theaters from UA to add this in the coming weeks. PK's run is only just beginning. I'll be shocked if this does not pass 1m. 2m is likely IMO. Everest had a poor outing with sneak previews. 3 days of sneaks and it could only muster $145,000 despite 3D premium charge. Next week will be interesting to watch. Love Detective held up alright with no direct competition this week.

Olive, I have to say that last weekend really exposed Cinetel as not being a very reliable source. Last weekend wasn't the first time that the numbers did not match up with the running admissions from theaters. I recall the Love Live! opening weekend where its admissions were not being reported properly on wmoov and its number on Cinetel was below what it should be. I think Cinetel makes up the numbers based on wmoov's admissions. Be careful if you're using Cintel as a source as sometimes wmoov can be very wrong.

Maze Runner 2 adds 3D to its repertoire this week but UA is the most intent of the 4 big theater chains to switch Maze Runner to 3D. Broadway/AMC will only give schedule it on 3D with 1 or 2 showings. The real surprise is that out of the 2 business district theaters, only 1 3D showtime will be shown on Thursday. Usually they will gladly run 3D for most of a film's run. Even Inside Out did not switch to 2D until its 5th week at those theaters. Maze Runner 2 will be shown on 2 screens almost everywhere. Pre-sales remain the best of all films on Thursday.

Everest shuffles into theaters in 3D and 2D. 3D will mostly be used for the morning and 7 PM showtimes. Pre-sales are slow once again.

American Ultra heads to theaters behind the expected top 2 in Maze Runner 2 and Everest. Scheduling is all over the place with some theaters behind the film with full day showtimes while others like MCL are only leaving this with 3 showtimes. Pre-sales are very slow.

Guia in Love, The Merger and La Famille Bélier are the other openers on Thursday this week but won't be contending.

The 2nd Attack on Titan film, End of the World, will be released on Saturday. Pre-sales are not bad so far. It will be interesting to see how the addition of Titan will affect both the new openers and holdovers this weekend.

No Escape and Love Detective remains the big holdovers this week. At this stage, Love Detective has a better outlook than No Escape with more theaters showing this on Thursday. No Escape is gone from half of UA theaters.

PK drops back down to 6 theaters with Everest kicking into IMAX this week.

Besides those 3 holdovers, there will be a massive culling of the rest. Pixels and Hitman shrink to just 1 theater on Thursday and Mission Impossible does not fare much better with 2. Inside Out has longevity on its side as 10 theaters will keep it on weekdays for another week. Worthy of noting is that the one theater that is giving Inside Out a 7 PM showtime on Thursday is surprisingly beating out all other films' 7 PM showtimes at this moment.

Hi,

I'm part of a team of box-office enthousiasts from France.

Inflation is a b**ch and, as we saw with AOU, it does not tell the real attendance of a movie. Would you know where I can put my hand on hard data about attendance in HK?

Otherwise, this year has been frantic in terms of box office. Would it be possible to release an updated TOP 25 of the biggest box office drawers in the city? Both local and foreign. For example, I wonder how Little Big Master performed in the end. It was a good-hearted movie, and it deserves its success.

As for Hollywood guns, AOU fared magnificently, but it wasn't the only one. JW, MI6, IO, The Minions... all big box office drawers...

Thanks in advance ;-)

Wish I could help, moudoudou, but no one tracks admissions here, only gross. And even then it is spotty. Most of the sources have dried up in the past few years with most shutting down while others revert to rounding numbers to the thousands. HK MPIA and the box office corporation that tracks movies here are very secretive. If you are not a theater exhibitor, theater operator or certain media, you are not allowed access to the numbers.

Maze Runner 2 opening weekend actual - HK$14,881,802 [$1,917,765], more than 200,000 admissions OW (+32% from Maze Runner - HK$11,273,894 [$1,45,2827])

It's a great opening weekend even if it did not hit 2m OW. It will make it to 4m. MR2 should make more than the last Hunger Games movie here unless if the finale effect spurs a major increase.

Not good for Everest. Mediocre for Maze Runner 2. Awful for American Ultra. Very strong for PK despite the loss of the Airport IMAX theater. Iffy drops for No Escape/Love Detective. Man, these are some downright abysmal numbers. #3 did not even hit 500 admissions in pre-sales. Yikes.

Thanks BlueBomb!

Given that The Apple of my Eye is the biggest box-office drawer for a film in Chinese, is there any particular expectation for Our Time, the lattest big success in Taiwan?

Well, the distributor has set the release date for Our Times for October 15, clearly trying to replicate Apple of My Eye's success in 2011. Apple of My Eye appealed to many HK'ers because of the subject matter. This one has the same formula but whether it will appeal to HK people remains to be seen. There is some major competition on October 22 (Black Mass, Legend, Last Witch Hunter, Goosebumps and Bridge of Spies all come out) so legs will be cut short, however, it does have the holiday on October 21. I'd say 4m is achievable but it needs to open well otherwise theaters will cut it in favor of new films the week after.

The Apple of my Eye is a foreign movie?

Apple of My Eye used to be in the Chinese section but they must have revamped the list. My above post has been amended to Top 50 Local Movies instead of Chinese Movies.

Rank Movie LW TW % chg
1 Everest -- 11,699 --
2 Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials 27,530 10,235 -62.8%
3 American Ultra -- 1,881 --
4 No Escape 3,497 1,846 -47.2%
5 PK 1,619 1,504 -7.1%
6 Love Detective 2,273 779 -65.7%
7 A Tale of Three Cities 1,038 587 -43.4%
8 Guia in Love -- 585 --
9 Boychoir 779 570 -26.8%
10 La Famille Bélier -- 418 --

Everest did not do that great. Judging from last weekend's previews, admissions increase on Saturday was below 50% which suggests families/weekend crowd are not interested in this type of movie. Maze Runner 2 had an iffy drop from opening day. Yes, there was some rush factor but reviews for the film are only decent so weekend drops will be mediocre. It will win Saturday/Sunday in admissions this weekend. American Ultra got high and never took off. Average for No Escape. Weekend hold this weekend will grow larger and larger due to theaters having to make room for Attack on Titan 2. Great hold for PK once again. Terrible for Love Detective. Meh for Three Cities. Boring opening for Guia in Love. Excellent hold for Boychoir.

Friday adm. (so far)     September 18
Rank Movie LW TW WKD % chg QD % chg
1 Everest 1,439 6,213 +331.8% +23.9%
2 Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials 12,376 5,724 -53.7% +77.4%
3 PK 902 856 -5.1% +120.6%
4 American Ultra -- 618 -- +24.6%
5 No Escape 1,228 483 -60.7% +49.5%
6 Boychoir 395 381 -3.5% +164.6%
7 Love Detective 730 292 -60.0% +43.1%
8 A Tale of Three Cities 560 220 -60.7% +52.8%
9 La Famille Bélier -- 219 -- +33.5%
10 The Merger -- 117 -- --

Weak increase for Everest. Better for Maze Runner 2. It should squeak out an admissions win today. PK is doing very well. Ghastly for American Ultra. Not good for No Escape, Love Detective or A Tale of Three Cities. Superb hold for Boychoir.

Some have given Everest/Maze Runner 2 less showings this weekend to accommodate Attack on Titan 2 while others have increased showtimes, taking away from other holdovers/American Ultra. The addition of Attack on Titan 2 will push everyone from #3 on downward below 1 spot. Pre-sales for Attack on Titan 2 look alright for now. It certainly was not as brisk as the first film.

Not bad for Maze Runner 2. Not good for Everest. Not good for American Ultra. Average for No Escape. Great holds for PK and Boychoir.

9 Wong Ka Yan -- 420 -- --
10 Love Detective 1,005 319 -68.3% +9.2%

Well well, Everest jumps 74% with Saturday pre-sales. Bad hold for Maze Runner 2. Poor opening for Attack on Titan 2. It did not even beat Attack on Titan's opening day Thursday pre-sales. Excellent for PK. No Escape had a harsh drop. Due to many special screenings this weekend, some upcoming films have jumped right into the top 10 on Saturday. Our Times and Wong Ka Yan both make their debut. Boychoir seems to be slowing down. Awful hold for Love Detective.

Inside Out's run has been really impressive. 4th best animated film, biggest original animated film, 14th best foreign film.

14th highest grossing film of all time. Its run has been spectacular. I only thought it would make 5m at first.

Some food for thought: As of Thursday, Inside Out's HK run would be equivalent to 371.4m in the US.
